How is Skyrim on an "entirely new" engine when I see

Post » Sun May 20, 2012 1:55 am

Things like rain going through overhangs, arrows perpetually sticking to the player, and those obscene ragdoll physics when a monster dies. There's no way it is a new engine built from the ground up. It feels more akin to Valve's Source engine in which they use modular upgrades on the original engine.

They said a bit before Skyrim's release that it's not an "entirely new engine." It's just a heavily modified Gamebyro.

It was never said it was an entirely new engine. In fact, they claimed otherwise. People these days.

The first is an issue with the rain effect.

Ragdoll physics aren't part of the game engine. They're likely using Havok, and that's an entirely separate component. Also, just about everyone that uses physics in their games use it, so it's not just an elder scrolls thing.

Also, most Valve games lately have also used Havok. It's one of the best physics engines out there atm. Source isn't the only engine that's "modular" in that way.

Never did they say it was a new engine...They said it was a heavily modded engine. Find me a quote where they said new engine. You wont. You will find a bunch of "Modded engine". "Heavily modded Fallout 3 engine"... Stuff like that.

They're likely using Havok

I think I just herp'd so hard I derp'd.

You do realize that them using Havok has NOTHING to do with their horrible ragdoll physics, other than the fact that the physics only rely on Havok?

Seriously, don't blame Havok, Havok is le awesome.

They did say its a new engine. It is a new engine. They never said it was a modified engine. The company that made gamebryo went out of business. They call it the Creation engine.

It is a new engine.

Is a 2012 Honda Accord not a new car if there's already a 2008 Accord?

Nope, think of Infinity Ward and Treyark(?) who made CoD. They use the same engine all the time and don't even modify it.

It's a new VERSION of the accord, not a Toyota Thundercoupefalconbird.

Seeing lots of speculation about #tesv game engine. It's brand new... and it's spectacular!

The term "new engine" is very subjective.

The principles of OOP (Object Orientated Programming) mean that most game code is modular.

Alot of companies will improve parts of their old engine, while reusing some of the code to create their "new" engine.

Wether they should refer to it as a new engine is debatable unless it's all rewritten from the ground up.

No offense, but you are dead wrong on that one. Fine me ONE quote where they call the Skyrim engine "Gamebryo". Todd did nothing BUT go on about how the "creation engine" was a "whole new engine" in every interview he did!!

Insert the following into google and do a search: todd howard skyrim game engine. You will see 47,000 entries with Todd going on about how they created a whole new engine for Skyrim. Most of us knew it was still Gamebryo though, since prior to announcing Skyrim, they stated that their next project would be using a heavily modified version of Gamebryo. Todd then decided that it was good marketing to call it a new engine, since people had a lot of issues with Gamebryo.

That being said, I do love Skyrim, and think they did an amazing job working with the old as hell tech they had to work with. The looks stunning in spots, but it also looks quite ugly in others. I don't want to sound too negative, but I really don't like being lied to and misled. Imo that is false advertising. Anyone who played or followed a Codemasters game called Dragon Rising knows why I would be p!ssed about that....

I think it's brand new..just stripped the old one down to the bare bones and reworked it. I am also assuming they are using the same coders/programmers, so they just wrote the engine very very similar, keeping things the same to make it easier to finish in 3 years. You guys also have to remember a new engine would take longer and more than likely not work on the current consoles.

Hopefully with the new found success and profits, Bethesda's next Elder Scrolls installment will be reborn with a new engine for the future next generation console and PC hardware.... 4 years... XD

I had a bizarre conversation about "new" and "innovative" things at work the other day.

To some people, a thing can't be "new" unless it's built from scratch.

Well, to me, since everything made by man is built on what came before it, the argument about the engine being new and the exasperation and petulant whinging of people complaining about the engine not being "all new" and the "lies" talk, etc, generates a giant MEH from me. It's kiddie nonsense from people who never really did much in my opinion. And 'false advertising'. Yeah sure. A guy talking about the game. Ask a lawyer their opinion of what constitutes 'false advertising' some time

Seriously. F'n Chevrolet. The new Corvette is almost the old one with a couple new things tossed in and some improvements! Those LIARS! And the ad read "NEW for 2012", too! Grrr. I am mad, I has disappointments
