How do I uninstall the Skyrim texture pack DLC?

Post » Wed May 30, 2012 1:35 am

Title says it all...
My computer couldn't handle it, and it really didn't look much better (I did over 30 comparison screenshots all over the world), except for clothes.

Now, I know I can just disable the .esp files, but I don't want 3 GB of stuff I will never use hogging up my Skyrim folder.

So how do I uninstall this?

You can't delete it. You can only disable.

If you just want to save space and you know you will never use them I suppose you could manually delete the two files in your game directory. Not sure if the game looks for them if you have them disabled.

But, I have to admit there really should be a way to uninstall them without having to uninstall the entire game to do it.

That is a shame...

But what about in Launcher > Data Files, there is a button says "Delete Selected". What about that? Won't that delete them?

Thing is, they should have been with the game on launch. If they had been, they'd be taking up the same amount and they'd still be impossible to remove. In all honesty, it really doesn't make much difference.

Yes, but they'll be downloaded again as they were implemented as DLC and work like a game update.

Impossible to remove? Yeah right not that hard to look in the Data folder.

Anyway go to your Launcher and untick both ESP's and then go into Skyrim's Data folder and delete these FOUR files.

HighResTexturePack01.bsa
HighResTexturePack01.esp
HighResTexturePack02.bsa
HighResTexturePack02.esp

And bam it's gone.

EDIT: Hmm STEAM might redownload them, hmm replace them with blank txt files ? Lol.

Ah... yes that was what I feared.

Because I feared it would cause trouble, like death souls just said.

This is kind of troublesome anyway, there really should be a way to uninstall such a huge DLC.
I guess I'll have to live with the hogging up space there.

Think of it as the missing texture level in the launcher, not as DLC. Should make you feel better about it taking up space. :)

Apparently, you can put the four files (HighResTexturePack01.esp, HighResTexturePack02.esp and the two bsa by the same names) that are in your data files folder in the trash bin. I just tried it and nothing happened. I even quit Steam and re-openened it; it didn't re-download them.

Eh, it'll still redownload them the next time it has to download something like an update. Then your update will take a long time.

It WILL! Ran into the same problem. I'd unpacked the BSAs so as to not have to keep the .ESPs (I don't use BSAs), but the plugins and BSAs keep auto downloading and with the textures already installed and loose, the forced re-download of the texture pack overfills my poor 24GB Skyrim SSD =/

I tried placing dummy plugins and BSAs with the same names in my Data directory, but Steam saw through it and forces downloading just the same. Would be nice to be able to 'unsubscribe' from it and not 'cause I don't want to keep 'em, but because I no longer need the 3GBs of BSA.

I think I'll see it this way: if I ever wanna retexture or improve on a vanilla texture, using the slightly higher res ones as a starting point is better than using the vanilla lower res ones. :)

Still, cmon Bethesda. 3GBs...
Should be deletable.

Well thankfully they didn't include them in the vanilla game or I'd be getting CtD every 30 seconds with that and Skyrim would be unplayable. Hard Drive space seems to be pretty cheap these days so I guess I'll let it sit there.

I wonder if you 'unpurchased' the Free DLC if that would make it stop auto-installing itself. Surely someone before has bought something off of STEAM, didn't like it and wanted it removed.

reinstalling the game will just have steam download the DLC + updates all over again.... the DLC if you chose to add it, is permanently stuck to the account...therefore the game... and will repeatedly download it

And this is why I'm just a touch wary of Steam Workshop...
I've downloaded the HiRes pack, tried it in-game and had similar problems to the rest of you - crashes instantly outdoors with both ESPs enabled... I've been able to get away with enabling just the second ESP without an insta-crash, but haven't played enough to see if it causes a problem with more play.

I knew I might be pushing the boat out a bit - I've got Vista 32bit and a GeForce GTX 260 - but I thought I'd try it anyway. I might end up having to just disable it and go back to the way it was. BUT - it'd be really nice to be able to 'unbuy' the DLC and dump it completely. Or move the BSAs into my 'unpack' folder to use as a basis for any textures I might like to tweak, as suggested). But it looks like it's gonna keep rolling back like a bad penny...

Just occurs to me: What if I decide to install Skyrim on my laptop? I know for a fact that couldn't handle the HiRes pack... but it seems like I'm going to be forced to take it anyway, as it's the same Steam Account.

Also - with it being a DLC, I wonder what would happen if I tried to use the Creation Kit to edit the ESPs and pick 'n choose just some Hi-Res textures?
Would Steam see those changes as corruption and just download the original ESPs to 'fix' it?
EDIT: nvm - had a quick look, the ESPs are just 1KB, nothing shows in 'Details' in the CK - I guess they just activate the BSAs, all or nothing... so that Idea goes down the tubes.

That's what I wonder about with mods downloaded via the workshop - sure I could unsubscribe and dump them if I didn't like them, but could I tweak them to my liking in the CK, or would Steam just overwrite with the original?
Not too sure about automatically updating mods... but I guess that's a different thread.

I'll think of it as a abscess :(

Or perhaps simply as "OK, now I have EVERYTHING official installed, and everything is always good".

This is a big Steam flaw. To me Steam has only brought negatives, nothing positive.

again i say..... uncheck the HD pack in the DATA FILES and play on...

it's no different than ANY other game that comes with HQ textures already included... there is usually a check box or a texture setting that allow you to go from low/normal/high/ULTRA.... the HD DLC is ultra... untick/unselect it and a be done.

Install to your laptop.. they made it easy as pie to disable high res textures....

I am not happy about what I'm reading here. I appreciate Beth releasing HD textures for us, but I am used to a tidy install folder and mod list. :sadvaultboy: After taking so much time to learn how to mod Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout 3 and NV cleanly I feel like I am being a bad kitty!

I unpacked my HD bsa's to avoid the bsa loading problems, and would really love to delete the redundant content. However, anytime I want to verify files or whatnot Steam will re-download this package?

At the moment it looks like I have to keep the files handy and drop them into data files anytime I need to update. I wish Steam and TES understood one another a little better. :nope:
