Initial Technical Details

Game automatically installed without giving me an option of where to put it (unless I'm blind, possible as its late).

Base directory then is Drive:\Whereever you have steam installed\steamapps\common\fallout new vegas - same basic directory structure as before with Data\ and sub-trees.

The master file is FalloutNV.esm, size is 239k (where Fallout3.esm is 282k) - fairly comparable.

One Mesh BSA and Two Texture BSAs - must be alot of art in there. :) Big Sound BSA, small Misc - the crazy one is Voices1 BSA - 1.5 Gigs :laugh: They weren't kidding about 65,000 lines of dialogue!

The credits (two versions, one wacky, one normal) are in formatted text files in the Data\ directory - WOW. They put alot of troops into this fight, thats for sure.

No presence of the GECK app on the Disc, they must be offering it via download at some point - hopefully tomorrow as they mentioned it was to be released at the same time.

Fo3Edit doesn't seem to recognize it yet, need to find Elminster and let him know.

BSA commander WORKS, and I am currently unpacking all of the BSA's for anolysis. :read:

When uncompressed, the assets of the game consume 8 Gigs of disk space.

Same directory structure as before, with some interesting additions. Here is the vanilla Data\ tree:

facegen\lodsettings\lsdata\menus\meshes\sound\textures\trees\


Facegen has but one file; si.ctl - its not clear text.

lodsettings is Full of files now, 9 different dlodsettings files now..

Meshes is all XML, this bodes very well for DarN and his fabulous UI. :celebration:

I'm a jerk. Actually I'm just tired and need to goto bed. I have to retract my statement, Not All of the Fallout3 assets made it. It looks like most of them did, but there are some omissions. As I suspected months ago, the left out things that were very specific to Fallout3/DC-Area, things like the Lincoln Memorial and Statesman hotel are gone. Yet many are still in (like the Megaton assets), underworld assets, office, utility assets - all the generic kit piece stuff is there. Its not Quite as wonderful as having all of the Fallout3 assets, but no honest person could ask for more than this. Its still a Fantabulous gift. :)

Sooo...

I LOVE BETHESDA! THIS IS WONDERFUL!

Yes its 4am and I've lost it. This is beyond wonderful, it is a gift from above. I can transfer all of my mod now, Skyhaven Airport is going to make it now! :celebration: :fallout: :goodjob: :woot: :clap: :tops: :rock:

You can use NTFS junctions to put your steam game directory somewhere else, while still having Steam in the default place.

Get creative and you can do this for specific games - as long as you know the directory name prior to install!


Miaximus - wait, what? You mean all the data files from FO3 are present? Holy carp!

I wonder how long it will take until someone creates a mod that adds a 'door' to the Capital Wasteland :D

all of the FO3 assetts? Brilliant, because people were complaining they didn't like the "bug" Enclave armour. Now you can just mod in the FO3 Enclave armour instead.

The game (since oblivion, through fallout3, and apparently now in NV) includes commands to dump these lists, and to save the console output to a log.

(I wonder how easy it'd be to make a F3->New Vegas engine mod?:P)


I had to retract part of my statement, upon closer inspection it looks like some assets didn't get transferred - Fallout3-specific / DC-area-specific things like the Statesman are gone, but it looks like a great many made it using the same model/texture names and paths as before. I'll have to dump the directories of both games into a database and come up with a list of what did and did not make it - we'll need that to know what we can Legally transfer in our mods from Fo3.

Also of note; It looks as though Steam connects and authenticates Every Single Time I play the game. Running from the direct binary does the same thing.

Now that my BS is not such BS, back to the game! I Love the character creation stuff, the traits look great, all good so far! :fallout: Now I have to actually Leave the doc's place. ;)

Yes; the main EXE is encrypted/protected this time. Not great news.

Not right now, but it's basically a csv file; loading it up in to Excel and comparing with the function list from f3 seems pretty simple to do.

The game (since oblivion, through fallout3, and apparently now in NV) includes commands to dump these lists, and to save the console output to a log.

FWIW, that isn't how.

OBSE and FOSE were not initially compatible with the Steam release either but the devs (Actually, I think it was Valve) fixed that too. So hopefully the same happens for New Vegas.

FOSE actually worked with no modifications needed since they didn't protect the main EXE, only the launcher. Once the main reason for EXE protection is gone (don't talk about it) I'll contact someone at Valve and see if we can work something out.

does anyone know if the ini command to "zoom out" the Pipboy is the same in this game? I like it farther away from me that the default in-your-face.
