Life outside of Earth...

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 1:06 pm

For me, this subject has always been a gray area. I am undecided as to whether I believe life exists elsewhere in this universe. Its hard not to, but it seems so unlikely that there is. What are the chances of there being a habitable planet like earth? Very slim. We have so much to discover about the universe, and our own galaxy as far as that goes. Its impossible for me to comprehend how large the universe is. Even our galaxy. When i look at the Milky Way i think of Earth as a small dot, but in reality it is much, much, much smaller than a visible dot. For years since childhood growing up a Star Wars fan, i have always dreamed of actually coming in contact with alien lifeforms, but something tells me there is nothing out there. But even so, if there was, what are the chances it would be an intelligent life form? The life form could be only a worm, or a bacteria, or a lizard of sorts. When most people think of alien, they think of something along the lines of a big headed martian, or a Twi'liek from the Star Wars universe or maybe an Asari from Mass Effect... but what are the chances? Most likely it would only be an instinct based animal that only lives to eat and reproduce. Call me a geek but thinking of this kinda bummed me out.

So lets say we do happen to come in contact with an intelligent life form. Stereotypically aliens are far more advanced than us Humans, they have mastered space travel, can read our thoughts, and are basically intellectually superior. Well what if they were hundreds or thousands of years behind in technology? And what would they look like? Would they be smooth skinned humanoids or 10 legged lizard creatures with 2 tails? Its sad to know we wont come in contact in any of our lifetimes should there be life out there somewhere. Please discuss :)

Also, this stuff tends to be a gateway topic for religious beliefs, please do try to keep the religion out :)

What are the chances of there being a habitable planet like earth? Very slim.

Depends, life may or may not have to have a earth like place to live, whats easy for us to live in may be extremely toxic to something else?

Even if there are no other earth like worlds ( in the vast sea of space there most likely at least one other similar planet ) that does not mean life has to have the same conditions?

Life beyond Earth? - Duh
Will we ever make contact - Very slim chance, cuz we will all be dead in like 500(max) years because of global warming, war etc.. There is just too much distance between each star & most stars probably don't own any planet that has life. It'll take us millions of years. They say that if you look to the edge of our Universe, you can see the Big Bang.

There is life out there beyond our Solar System.

There is Intelligent Life out there

No, they won't come visit us, because quite frankly, we are pretty boring on a cosmic scale.

Unless we dig out some cool prothean stuff on Mars, then we're in the big leagues...

...why have we not done that yet? :P

I suspect there is intelligent life out there and in the future (distant future) I suspect some* may even know that we existed due to all the waves we're sending out.

* The "some" may not exist yet.

Its very likely there is life. I mean, the Biocosm Hypothesis could be true, and if it is, then there IS a much more advanced civilization than ours.

I could imagine aliens having a discussion if there was life some where out there like we are.

"How would we communicate with them?"
"Who knows, they probably do something like communicate with audio, that just seem silly."

Considering how huge the universe is I'm fairly certain life probably exists elsewhere due to the insane number of chances for life to occur.

The certainty of some people on here astounds me. Yes, it is very likely there is alien life, but to say there definitely is without even batting an eyelid seems quite ridiculous to me.

Listen pal. The Universe is so vast, that we will probably never find that life. With the sun becoming a red giant in appoximately 800,000,000 years, we don't have enough time to find out. If you think I'm stupid or something, then you're not thinking about what I'm saying.

Considering the vastness of our universe, it's downright arrogant to think there isn't SOMETHING else out there. But considering the vastness of our universe, it's illogical to think they have visited us.

yes, thank you. I was thinking the same thing, glad someone else feels the same.

There are a uncountable amount of planets out there, I think the chances are that there is a life, tho honestly I don't really care, and until they come down and abduct me or start blowing [censored] up I probably won't ever care.

But out of curiosity what makes you guy assume that our society is so bad that aliens won't want to come here? For all we know our society could be like a peaceful utopia compared to there society and we might even have better resource then some as well, maybe they don't have anything like wood or plastic. Maybe they don't require oxygen to live, oxygen is only a requirement to live as far as we know but we don't much about anything outside of earth. Some aliens might have different requirements of life then we do. We could be very interesting to them, who knows.

800 million years is a long time, especially if we don't manage to kill ourselves in that time. Given time, entire systems can be mined of their resources, provided that we advance sufficiently in technology. If we pull off FTL travel and proceed on a space-based technological track, finding other lifeforms is entirely plausible.

I'm gonna say that there is, just because there could be millions of planets out there. You'd think at least one more would be habitable.

Even so, what scientists seem to forget is that aliens are ALIENS. They might not need what we need (oxygen, water, all that stuff), which just makes the possibilities even more endless than what they already are.

I remember watching something, not sure what, about life on other planets. Apparently they found a group of planets about the same distance from a star as Earth. So, that's one known possibility.

Hmm, life on other planets. It's a fun topic to ponder. Seems that there almost certainly is. And the universe being so vast, the possibilities are astounding. Are there humanoids? Are there any that, if put side-by-side with one of us, be indistinguishable? Is there some kind of non-carbon life? Even non-physical? Yes, very fun and interesting to think on.

But I think the reality of the situation is that, even assuming a universe teeming with life, and even assuming outside life does come here and interact in some way, we have our own set of issues and choices to make as a human species to be too overly concerned about aliens.

Uh... I was not assuming they wouldn't want to come here. I was assuming they will never contact us because they would have to find us first.

There's no reason for there not to be. An intelligent species would likely descend into post-singularity virtual solipsism after a few tens of thousands of years of civilisation, which is why we don't see them. We're just not that interesting.

We will probably see indirect evidence of them (megascale engineering, unnatural energy bursts) long, long before we make contact.

Probably. I'm not 100% sure there is, but I can't be untill I see hard proof, untill then I think it's highly probable. It's stupid to think the only planet in the vast universe to have life is earth, if the universe is as big as we think it is, then it's reasonable to think that there's life out there.
