Life outside of Earth...

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 3:30 am

For me, this subject has always been a gray area. I am undecided as to whether I believe life exists elsewhere in this universe. Its hard not to, but it seems so unlikely that there is. What are the chances of there being a habitable planet like earth? Very slim. We have so much to discover about the universe, and our own galaxy as far as that goes. Its impossible for me to comprehend how large the universe is. Even our galaxy. When i look at the Milky Way i think of Earth as a small dot, but in reality it is much, much, much smaller than a visible dot. For years since childhood growing up a Star Wars fan, i have always dreamed of actually coming in contact with alien lifeforms, but something tells me there is nothing out there. But even so, if there was, what are the chances it would be an intelligent life form? The life form could be only a worm, or a bacteria, or a lizard of sorts. When most people think of alien, they think of something along the lines of a big headed martian, or a Twi'liek from the Star Wars universe or maybe an Asari from Mass Effect... but what are the chances? Most likely it would only be an instinct based animal that only lives to eat and reproduce. Call me a geek but thinking of this kinda bummed me out.

So lets say we do happen to come in contact with an intelligent life form. Stereotypically aliens are far more advanced than us Humans, they have mastered space travel, can read our thoughts, and are basically intellectually superior. Well what if they were hundreds or thousands of years behind in technology? And what would they look like? Would they be smooth skinned humanoids or 10 legged lizard creatures with 2 tails? Its sad to know we wont come in contact in any of our lifetimes should there be life out there somewhere. Please discuss :)

Also, this stuff tends to be a gateway topic for religious beliefs, please do try to keep the religion out :)

Life beyond Earth? Of course. What are we the center of the universe or something? I didn't get the notice again! At the last meeting I was completely caught off guard when talking about a flat earth! ;)

Like I say in all these type threads, I believe there's life out there. With the incredible vastness of the universe, I'm of the opinion that it's seemingly arrogant to think that our one planet is the sole bearer of life amongst it.

Is there life outside Earth? Yes.

Is it intelligent? Maybe.

Will we ever make contact? Hell no, the universe is too vast.

(My opinions)

Considering the insanely massive size of the universe, it would be rather ignorant to say that there is no life.

I don't know, but we seem pretty damn big compared to a lot of stuff.

Personally, I've always believed in life outside of Earth. I even consider it a strong possibility of alien life in our own solar
system, like in the oceans of Europa or Enceladus. Maybe even some form of life in one of our gas giants in the upper atmosphere.

Outside our solar system, I think of it as a fact that there is other life. There are over 400 billion other stars in
the Milky Way, most of which have planets of their own. If life occurred here, it can surely happen elsewhere in similar
(or completely different) conditions.

I'm confident that we'll discover some evidence of alien life sometime this century. Possibly from microscopic fossils on Mars back from when it was like Earth, life in the possible oceans under Europa's and Ganymede's surface (my favorite moons btw), early life developing on Titan... there are a lot of spots in our solar system where life could be discovered, it's only a matter of time and money until we find it.

As for intelligent alien life, I think that exists too. But I'm not so sure it would even know we're here, much less visit us. If intelligent life really has visited us, that would mean they would have to have developed somewhat close to Earth, and if that was true, then the amount of potential intelligent life in the Universe would be mind-boggling.

And regarding how intelligent alien life would look, I don't even bother trying to imagine it. Real intelligent aliens probably look nothing like any human has ever imagined. That could mean either unique or boring looking, of course.

The ISS is always manned, and there's bacteria we left on the moon. Of course there's life beyond Earth. We put it there.

But what do you think about life that didn't come from Earth?

I do believe there is life out there. And I mean life in all the senses of the word. I'm sure there are things out there that we are alive that we can't even comprehend as life. All the way from unicellular organisms up to complex, technology using organisms. Will we meet them? Probably not. Space is too big. But I do think it's arrogant to think we're the only life in the Universe. The Universe is too big for our planet to the be the only one. I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out there are bacteria-like things living on some of the moons in our own Solar system. Europa, Titan, Enceladus. These all seem like they could be prime candidates for extra-terrestrial life in our own system.

But yeah, I firmly believe there is life out there.

Its impossible for me to comprehend how large the universe is. Even our galaxy. When i look at the Milky Way i think of Earth as a small dot, but in reality it is much, much, much smaller than a visible dot.

If the universe is so vast, how could there not be life other than that on Earth? Earth is a perfect environment for life, but seeing that some bacteria live in extreme heat, cold, and salinity, life is pretty good at making the best of what it's given.

Most of Earth's biomass is composed of organisms 1mm in size or less, and with microorganisms evolving up to 4 billion years ago, I would be surprised if our first look at alien life wasn't microscopic.

So lets say we do happen to come in contact with an intelligent life form. Stereotypically aliens are far more advanced than us Humans, they have mastered space travel, can read our thoughts, and are basically intellectually superior.

Just because they're aliens doesn't mean that they can break the laws of physics. ;)

Well what if they were hundreds or thousands of years behind in technology? And what would they look like? Would they be smooth skinned humanoids or 10 legged lizard creatures with 2 tails?

Remember, although it's hard to do you can't compare anything human to possible alien life. "Years behind in technology" could be completely irrelevant to their status as living beings. As said before, they could be microscopic or larger than dinosaurs. We can only imagine at this point.

Its sad to know we wont come in contact in any of our lifetimes should there be life out there somewhere.

I wouldn't throw in the towel yet.

Ponder this one in your noggins:

If we find an inteligent life form, how will we communicate with it? Since we come from completely different cultures and planets, translating is nearly impossible.

i for one will welcome our alien overlords when the decide to reveal themselves to us

@allstarn

develop a a written language that uses the most basic elemental structures to represent different things/ideas maby.(that is assuming they are advanced enough to know the structure of elements) after first contact ofcorse

I would think we'd use something similar to The Arecibo Message for the first contact.

What if the aliens developed a way to use electricity to communicate. Think an eel.. but far more advanced. That would be neat.

I said more advanced... as in they could finely control the amount. Thus transmitting their thoughts to any species... I think it would be most devious. Muahahaha, can anyone say awesome?
