Lockpicking skill tree...pointless!

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 11:54 am

However, Skyrim lockpicking is nigh impossible if you lack lockpicking perks/low lockpicking skill, because it's mostly chance.

Waaa? Did misinterpret your meaning?

Locking picking is unbelievably easy for many of us.

The skill would be extremely useful if lockpicks weren't so common...

This. The Oblivion system was good, because it was based on the player's skill with the lockpicking system. The security skill was just an aide on the side. However, Skyrim lockpicking is nigh impossible if you lack lockpicking perks/low lockpicking skill, because it's mostly chance.

You can open them at low level cause the angle you have to set the pick when your turn the lock is fixed. You can move the pick in small increments around the lock, breaking picks as you go, until you find the spot where the lock turns. With a little practice doing that you can pick even master locks with only a few broken picks.

Losing lockpicks isn't really a problem since you can buy them in batches of 30 from certain vendors plus you'll find tons of them while you're adventuring.

The best way to stop unskilled people from opening master locks is to have the tumblers reset if your pick breaks because then you can't just fiddle around a master level lock until you find the unlock point.

How does the lockpicking work on the PC? On the PS3, we tell if we're doing it right based on the intensity of vibrations in our controller as we're picking. How do you know if you're close to getting it on the PC??

There are two perks I found interesting, 50% chance for special items and twice as much gold.
But other than that the tree is so ridiculously easy that spending point in it is wasteful.

^^ This. I'm going up the lockpicking tree to see if these are worth it, but I'm already second-guessing the first two perk points I've spent in it, since gold and magic items are easy enough to come by.

I will say that the first two tiers of locks are now very convenient to open. The majority of the time I don't even have to move the little pick; the "sweet spot" is in the default vertical position, but I don't know if this is due to the perks or simply skilling up in lockpicking.

I really don't see an issue with it, it's enough of a challenge to be fun, but it's not so hard that I give up.

Plus the perks help make it quicker, especially with low level ones.

Easy, quicksave, try to pick from the middle, it broke? Now try, 1 oclock, it broke? Now try 2 oclock, it broke? Continue on. You ran out of lockpicks? Reload!
But honestly, at one point you'll have so many lock picks that it won't matter if you break 20 so later on you don't even need to save and reload.

And I fully agree with the OP.
The skill tree is absolutely pointless.
There are two perks I found interesting, 50% chance for special items and twice as much gold.
But other than that the tree is so ridiculously easy that spending point in it is wasteful.
If you have a hard time getting adjusted to the lockpicking system then work on it, try to figure it out, trial and error, but for the love of Bruce Willis do not spend any points in that skill tree, it isn't worth it, not even for roleplaying.

[edit]
I've never failed to pick a lock, and by that I mean I've never thought it's been so hard that I gave up and moved on.
The most picks I've failed on one lock is 9 to 12 on a Master lock.
This sounds surprisingly similar to what I do in Morrowind and Daggerfall :teehee:

Even in Morrowind you can pick most locks by buying a couple of Master lockpicks and clicking on the door until it opens or you run out of picks...

Whats worse than spending 5+ picks on a master lock? When you finally open it to find some boots, crappy low end potions and some other useless junk. I just said screw it and got that lockpick pro mod so i don't have to deal with breaking picks nonstop just to get some useless junk that sells for nothing. That is probably why the perk tree is semi useful, makes picking easier and also increases chance of semi decent loot. (even though i dont think ill put points into it at all since you need like 5 or so perks into the tree to get to the ones that are remotely worth getting)

Well I play on expert and tapping (literally just the quickest tap you can do) on a master lock 3 times will break a lockpick. Usually takes me between 10-20 lockpicks to get master locks open. To be honest I don't even bother anymore as there's usually nothing very good inside anyway. My lock picking skill is like 45 or something but don't have any perks. This is on PC, dunno if it's different to 360.

But yeah I think there is an imbalance with the lockpicking, speech and pick pocket skill trees. They're just simply not as good as the other skill trees imo. Mostly they can just get you a little more money and save you some time and or frustration. Where as smithing/enchanting/alchemy can make you god like, as do most of the other combat based skills.

Also I think there should be a magic spell for unlocking, and a warrior skill for forcing locks open. I think it's silly to literally lock players out of parts of the game because they chose a different class. Should be a different way to accomplish the same things for each "class" archetype imo.

Does anyone else have the problem where the lockpick jiggles around and breaks before you've even moved anything? Sometimes it happens 3 times in a row. Surely this can't be right. I've exited and gone back in and it does the same thing.I used to be pretty proficient with Fallout lockpicking and in Oblivion but in Skyrim there seems to be some glitch. It's VERY frustrating. It doesn't happen everytime but when it does I just feel like i'm being cheated. I play on Xbox and was wondering if it could be my controller ...

I'm sitting on 90+ lock picks, and I have never bought a single one. (I'm not even a thief type.)

I break at most 3 picks before I figure it out. If they wanted to make it a bit harder, the tumblers should randomize once a pick breaks.
Very good idea. Not much else to say other than I recognize this as an easily implementable fix to lockpicking that would make taking the tree worthwhile. I hope other people notice this as well.

I love that everyone who posts these "Lockpicking is pointless," topics doesn't pay attention to any of the perks in the tree that don't read "Makes X easier to open."
We do pay attention to those. The point is that making locks easier to open is pointless because all locks are already easy to open. Why waste perks making something that's already easy even easier if they could be better spent elsewhere?

Edit: Sorry about double-post. It had been a while since my last post and I had assumed that someone else would have replied by then.

The only reason I'm leveling lockpicking for my combat Nord is for one perk. The one that gives you 50% better items. Magic find rules.

Have you even looked at the perks? Two of them are 1) more gold and 2) better treasure...

Yeah this happens to me a lot. I think it's because the sensitivity of the lock picks has increased. I'm on xbox and my right stick is slightly loose so I have to hold it into the middle to ensure this doesn't happen.

Seriously, how do you open those Expert/Master locks on low level?
Just move it really, really slowly, and stop right away when it starts to shake and move it a bit. I usually only break one or two picks on high level locks that way, but you have to take it slowly and be patient, much like in Oblivion's lockpicking system.

Gold is not a problem in this game.

Define "better". If it said "50/50 or some such chance of unique items" ok, I could understand but "better" in this game is still crap sadly. (Most of the time.)

Without much difficulty. Do you understand how the mini-game works?

The Lockpicking tree is terrible.

I'm sold on this idea. I'd even be in favour of expert/master locks being completely impossible to pick unless you have reached a certain skill level, or at least taken some perks.
