...

@OP - I think the best solution in a mod would be to make all of Lydia's default gear playable.

Yes to be able to remove her outfit ingame would be the most elegant solution, but like akbaa said, her kit might be hard coded, so it always come back. To have a companion spawn in the world with just civilian cloth would be a nice compromise and probly less complicated to implement.

I'd be happy just to be able to talk to her and ask her what she likes.

THIS OH GOD THIS.

Why couldn't Beth decrease the number of listless swords-for-hire and give us four-five companions with defined personalities? Damn it.
I'm not asking for Bioware-level NPCs, just someone who is slightly more than another body to throw at the enemy.

Well, we'll know for sure what's going on once we have the CK.

I'm disappointed as well. I was hoping for at least the level of personality we had in FO3. I'm sure modders will fill in the gap.

I see how it helps the gameplay by making us explore around and stuff, but it's ridiculous that I can't ask someone who lives in the city where to find things, goods, services. It bugs me no end that I can't ask Lydia anything, especially what she'd like to do, where to go, what she wants.

She didn't even complain when I took her for a ride over a waterfall! Was that like some childhood dream of hers??!?!

I gave her dwemer gauntlets once and she put them on. However, enchanted steel gauntlets were a no go. I guess it is purely based on armor value and weapon damage. If the armor value is higher or damage is higher than her default gear, she will equip it. Currently, for me she uses her default armor set, an ebony war axe, and a Dwemer Bow of Arcing.

Hmm have to test on different gauntlets. Good to know.

How's it stupid? "Hi, I'm trained in using heavy armour and two-handed swords!" "Too bad. Take this robe and bow." If you really want an archer, you should look into finding someone who's actually trained in archery - like a hunter or something.

That's the [censored] problem, there is no [censored] differentiation in Lydia's fighting style. She randomly fights with her bow, or she'll sometimes charge in with her sword and shield. I want to control that, and that goes for all the companions. No Lydia, I don't need you shooting with a bow while I'm shooting with a bow, I need you tanking with your sword and shield.

I gave lydia dwarven armor and weapon and she equipped both. You can take items she has if you go into the trade screen. Not her initial armor, though.

I think she is carrying 100 steel armors and boots. I Noticed the number when looking at showinventory. I used 100 after my removeitem command and she has not reverted back to her steel armor since.

Okey, so what command should I use in the console to completely remove the armor forever?

Lydia is scripted to use the absolute best items you give her.

In MY game she's wearing full plate steel.

As long as what you give her is better than what she currently has, you're not going to see a difference.

Agreed. I expect this to be one of the first companion mods: Add two hotkeys, one which activates the "do this" mode and one which toggles wait/follow, so that we don't have to go into dialogue or open a menu every time we want followers to do something. (There's an FO3 companion mod which has these hotkeys built in for its companion. They don't sound like that big a deal, but, for me, it was the first time I ever actually enjoyed having an NPC along.)
You can also activate the command mode by holding E while targeting them, but I agree that the hotkeys would be better so they don't have to be within range of touch.

this will be addressed in my realism/conversion mod...
its one of the more annoying things with companions switching back to the default gear.

Side question. Been doing this with my wife. Able to give her the clothes I want and remove the clothes I don't want via the console... problem is... I don't know how to get her to wear the clothes.

Since she isn't a companion I don't have access to her inventory like I do with Lydia so I am kinda stuck. Any ideas?

EDIT
Nevermind. I found the EquipItem command which works wonders.

Actually the wear item one didn't work. Seem she takes off the clothes everytime the area is reloaded.

Another issue though which is strange. I can't seem to change an actors name which was easy in Oblivion.

I have tried targeting her and doing
SetActorFullName "Sylgja Ravencroft"
But I get this error
Item 'Sylgja Ravencroft' not found for parameter message.

So even tried
SetActorFullName 000c3a46 "Sylgja Ravencroft"
Which didn't work.

Any ideas?

You can actually add her as a companion. Earlier today i hunted for a halfway decent looking companion wife and at some point i found one.

Select her with the console and enter this :
SetRelationshipRank Player 3
AddtoFaction 19809 0
AddtoFaction 5c84d 0

This will make her a marriageable companion...IF her voice set supports this kind of dialogue.
I was able to convert half Riften to marriageable companions that way, but then there are also those NPCs who have unique voice sets -- for them it doesnt work.

I tried giving my companion a better name as well, nothing worked yet...
It seems as if names as well as default equipment work quite differently than in previous games.
For some reason, i almost understand the delay of the Creation Kit, considering that we are already presented with unusual aspects such as these....

I hope someone comes across a solution for the names.

Also, did anyone find out how exactly the MatchFaceGeometry command works ? As far as i know, this could be used to copy/paste the PC′s face onto an NPC.

One last thing about the way Skyrim handles NPCs : Earlier i tried to exchange hair meshes with each other (Replace NordHair15 with NordHair 02 --> Causing Sylgja to have the same hairstyle as Lydia), but upon loading the game, Sylgja still had her original hair. Only by typing in SetNPCWeight X, she changed the hairstyle (and lost all facial details in the process) --- upon reloading or switching the worldspace, she reverts to her old hairstyle... :( Do bsa files get preferred ? Is ArchiveInvalidation already working ?

I just want to be able to hotkey the "do this" option so I don't have to talk to them every time.

Also, make them able to mine and pick locks. They can't do it even if they have a pickaxe/lockpick.

If you look at your companion and hold down the (E) key or im guessing if your on xbox the (A) button it does the same thing as "I need you to do something for me" or w.e. the conversation choice is.

Back to Lydia for a moment.

I have the home in Solitude but for some reason when I part ways with her she still goes back to Dragonsreach. Oh the pain!

Lydia wears/uses whatever I give her to wear, as long as it's something she wants to use. if I give her heavy armor she will wear it, if I give her a robe she will not wear it. I think it's pretty much perfect the way it is. my Lydia is wearing Steel Plate Armor and wielding a Glass Sword & Elven shield.

Be careful what you give her. She has no problem using staves.

And using them way better than I ever could. Good lord I honestly felt bad for the Giant that had to face her wielding the Rose of Sanguine, Staff of Magnus, Staff of Fireballs, and the Staff of Jyrik Gauldurson.

She dual wielded them and switched between them like a madwoman.

It's a rp game. You should be able to do whatever you want, including telling your companions what to wear.

I got my Lydia in fine clothes atm. The catch is you cant remove everything on her. Click her and type showinventory then remove the shield, and chestplate. You have to leave the boots/gauntlets or her script just replaces the whole thing. Every once in a while she'll revert to underware for me, but going to trade puts the fine clothes back on.

Just keep the bracers/boots in her inventory, it should allow you to replace whatever you want with the main clothing/armor slot.

I did not write down the item numbers.

Hit tilde
Click lydia
type Showinventory
type removeitem (add the steel armor number here) 100

I haven't been able to make Lydia wear any other bow than her wooden looking POS. I can make her equip pretty much anything else without console assistance.

Also for those trying to rename her, the rename function requires a MESG reference, not a string reference. If you make a reference for that string you could then set the actor's name to that reference. I don't believe there is a console command to create a string reference but there should be a script function in the CK for it as it is possible to rename items.

There seem to be scripts that force some actors, if not all, to always wear a certain outfit and the script update time varies from immediately to a rezone.
