[REQ] Lydia outfit upgrade

Post » Wed May 16, 2012 2:06 am

So basically I want to force a different outfit on my companion, because even though I gave her the best, she still uses her original bow and armor.

If any one feels up to it, or point me in the right direction to do it myself..

EDIT:

Actually, to remove her outfit completely would solve it right there.

I guess there will soon be a mod that lets you switch all of your follower's gear. Seems stupid that they didn't include the option in my opinion.

She uses the exquisite bow/sword I give her.

WRT armor, yeah, custom assignments would be nice.

I'd be happy just to be able to talk to her and ask her what she likes.

On that note, I want to give my wife a new dress and jewelry (but I can't as there's no option to open their inventory and replace their original gear) :(

Odd, my Lydia is in full Flawless Dwemer gear. Sometimes I've noticed that I have to trade with her to take and give a piece for it to start showing up again. Hope this helps.

Lydia wears/uses whatever I give her to wear, as long as it's something she wants to use. if I give her heavy armor she will wear it, if I give her a robe she will not wear it. I think it's pretty much perfect the way it is. my Lydia is wearing Steel Plate Armor and wielding a Glass Sword & Elven shield.

Are you sure it's better gear? Perhaps her perks and skills mean that her current gear is actually better on her?

The armor she equips is based on the AV difference. If you give her Daedric armor, she will equip that instead of her default armor. If you give her a daedric sword, she will equip that over her iron sword.

Pretty [censored] stupid system if you ask me because there is no way to control their combat style OR the equipment they're wearing. Can only hope for mods to save the day.

Yea, I gave her a full set of steel plate armor and she wears it along with the elven sword of fire.

interesting. That would explain it.

I assure you that she never used the Daedric armor or bow. She only used the Daedric long sword, the helmet and necklace. Are we all playing on a PC here?

If she isn't wearing Daedric armor that you gave her, there must be a reason. She wears the Dwemer Armor I gave her.

I'm not sure I understand this. Are you saying that you outfitted her using the command console, or are you saying that you got 'blades armor' using the command then gave it to her using the ingame trade interface?

I noticed what she wear seems to change, I gave her a head ban and a hood, (to carry for me!) when in doors shea wears
the head band and when out side the hood, (given to her via the ingame menus).
So, I think there is some thing else going on here.

It's just like Fallout 3/New Vegas. Companion outfits are marked as "unplayable," so they can't be seen in their inventory. Therefore, the only way to get them to change is to either equip them with something with a higher armor rating, use the construction set to make their outfits playable (can't do this yet), or use the "showinventory" console command to find what item they're wearing and remove it from their inventory (and then after that, they'll wear whatever you give them, armor rating or not).

Ok, I got Lydia to wear the Daedric armor, finally, but now I think it looks like a bad Halloween costume, so I'm reconsidering my choices. Not sure what was the problem before. The Daedric bow is a no go. She still prefers her original bow.

For the 'companion mod' to be, I would like everyones input. What do you think about no armor and no weapons for the companions intro? Just civilian clothing.

I just want to be able to hotkey the "do this" option so I don't have to talk to them every time.

Also, make them able to mine and pick locks. They can't do it even if they have a pickaxe/lockpick.

Aye, i believe companions have certain skills etc that rule what equipment they will use when given. Personally i would like them to be able to equip gauntlets and boots also. As currently only helmet, weps and armor will be used by companions.

I gave her dwemer gauntlets once and she put them on. However, enchanted steel gauntlets were a no go. I guess it is purely based on armor value and weapon damage. If the armor value is higher or damage is higher than her default gear, she will equip it. Currently, for me she uses her default armor set, an ebony war axe, and a Dwemer Bow of Arcing.

How's it stupid? "Hi, I'm trained in using heavy armour and two-handed swords!" "Too bad. Take this robe and bow." If you really want an archer, you should look into finding someone who's actually trained in archery - like a hunter or something.

What they will equip and use will depend on what they come with as default equipment and what you are offering them as replacements. I have Marcurio following me and I've upgraded his boots at least twice and gave him a set of gauntlets, but he came to me in mages robes so his stuff wasn't that great to begin with and I outfitted him in a whole new kit. I think that their weapons are controlled in the same way that weapons were controlled in FO3 and NV and it's mostly damage dealt. I've given him an enchanted bow and he equipped that over his default bow no problem. He also came with a dagger in his inventory that I can see and remove, which is awesome, and was unexpected, as I can control his combat that way, as he doesn't do melee because he has no melee weapon now, only a bow and his ranged spells that he casts.

@OP - I think the best solution in a mod would be to make all of Lydia's default gear playable.

There is more to it actually. When you click on her during console mode and type in "inv", you can see that she is wearing steel armor. Whenever i remove that and give her something else (or go to another world space), her steel armor returns. So it seems, not only her steel armor is unplayable, but there also seems to be a script that will always give her back her equipment.

(I could try to force delete it via the console though...)

Agreed. I expect this to be one of the first companion mods: Add two hotkeys, one which activates the "do this" mode and one which toggles wait/follow, so that we don't have to go into dialogue or open a menu every time we want followers to do something. (There's an FO3 companion mod which has these hotkeys built in for its companion. They don't sound like that big a deal, but, for me, it was the first time I ever actually enjoyed having an NPC along.)

When you say remove her steel armor are you taking it out of her inventory and putting it in yours or are you unequipping it in the console?
