Mars Rover Curiosity: Landing Tonight!

Post » Tue Aug 07, 2012 12:23 am

I can't believe there is not already a thread on this subject!

Tonight is the date of the mars rover Curiosity's landing. It's going to land at about 10:30pm Pacific Time.
I'm watching the event on Xbox live in HD right now. You can also watch it on nasa's website, www.nasa.gov

Everyone with any interest should watch the live feed from NASA. If you are only interested in the actual landing then tune in at 10:00pm.

Well it doesn't really seem interesting. It's just watching it from a screen and of something that has happened before.

When Viking I and II did it, it was more interesting.

An event like this is always exciting. A man made object is currently flying through space towards another planet, and has been flying for a whole year. In half an hour it is going to enter the atmosphere of a planet other than our own.

What I'm getting at is that it isn't the Viking mission. We have done it before so it is just sort of "meh" now.

Mars will become interesting again if we find life or if man lands on mars.

If that's how you feel then thats how you feel. This is the first time I've watched an event like this, which I suppose makes it exciting for me.

That's not exciting when a person goes to mars then it will be a bit more exciting.

I watched something on the site but it was just a bunch of NASA guys in a giant circle jerk, I didn't see any footage of the craft thingy at all. Boo!

My brother told me about this, except that it's not happening tonight, but Monday night.. I'll be watching it for sure. I also watched Venus moving across the Sun on NASA TV.. that was entertaining.

I suppose it depends on your time zone too, if it's already Monday where you are. It's about to turn where I'm at.

Either there is something called a "circle jerk" or you are being meaner than required. There is not going to be a video being taken on the spacecraft because the lens poking out would jeopardize the landing. The event isn't any less spectacular.

There isn't a camera guy flying alongside it. You probably won't get any full footage of the rover. Besides, it's in it's capsule right now, and that ain't got no windows.

Aww, that's disappointing. I was under the assumption that either the craft had a camera, or there was a satellite tracking it or something.

I'm watching the feed right now on the NASA website. I was hoping to see the rover land by rushing through a flaming hot inferno as it enters the atmosphere, then as it hits turbulence it tumbles out of control and the rockets on the bottom meant to slow it down will end up speeding it up, causing it to crash at fuller-than-before speed to end in a fiery explosion and a waste of a billion dollars.

But now by what others have pointed out, even if that all happens, I won't get to see any of it. :c

Plus, this isn't a movie. D:

Eh, I'm just going to watch the show about it on TV.. last major one I watched was when Venus crossed the face of the sun. What time is it supposed to be landing, anyway? Has it been said?

I sat up all night at work when one of the last probes was to land on Mars and of course all we got was a black screen for ages because it'd crashed, and then the stream was cut, it wasnt till a few days later they announced it had basically slammed into Mars.

There's a feed with a countdown clock, it's going to touch down in about nine minutes.

I'm gonna point out right now that this countdown is pretty messed up. It keeps getting lengthened. It went from nine minutes to twenty minutes. I don't know if thing is ever gonna land! :ahhh:

I don't even see a countdown on the feed I'm watching

Nevermind, I just saw a glimpse of it.

Edit2: They did just say Mars is pulling it in.. should be sometime tonight.
