Mass Effect Thread #54

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 4:48 pm

Why is there arguing anyway. Isn't it just a case of either buy it or don't. While I don't think it's the most mature thing to say 'You're stupid for spending your money on it'....meh. If I get enjoyment out of it then I'm happy to buy it. It's £30.....hardly the end of the world. And I don't mind 'supporting' them for creating a game series that I love.

I dont see an issue. People are defending a pad practice. Anyone who cares about mass effect, or gaming (or anything really) should be against cutting content from the final product. Just for the company to squeeze more money out of you.

Do you suggest not buying it as a protest then?

I wasnt buying mass effect 3 anyway. Some people are going as far as to boycott ME3 completely becuase of this dlc.
Not buying it is fine. But I dont see any reason not to challenge people who support devs doing this.

I'm not challenging anyone (assuming you did mean me), but I think having a discussion without basically implying those who do buy it are wrong is possible too. :)

Buying it is not wrong, it's the defending of the practice that I find odd. It's one thing, perfectly acceptable, to say "I love this franchise, I want all of it, I will pay whatever they ask". That should be fine with everyone, you can't argue against that. It's quite a different thing to come up with reasons why money-grubbing practices which require to pay full retail for most of the game they have made is OK.

So I've been playing the demo a LOT lately, more time than I've ever spent on a demo. This is the most fun horde-mode I've ever played. I generally hate horde-mode style games, but this is just done so well. The maps are fantastic, the classes each play very very differently, and the enemies are unique and satisfying. I'm not sure which class I enjoy playing the most so far. It's a toss-up between Krogan Soldier, Human Vanguard or Asari Adept. Each one is a blast on silver difficulty and I can solo bronze on the soldier and vanguard. The Asari is excellent against phantoms and the vanguard is nearly as good.

I dun know who to love most!

I don't care about any of these debates. I'm buying ME3 so I can continue playing as the Shepard with the incredibly messed up face I began back in 2007. The memories.

Yup. What happens in the inernet stays in the internet :hehe: Forever, unfortunately :cold:

Already have pre-ordered and have been playing ME2 to prepare import saves. Today played the Lair of the Shadow Broker first time, Pretty good, and it inlcuded the missing Shepard/Liara romance continuation content  There's one character that is still in the middle of ME1, so i get to play that too before 3's release.

And at the risk of being ridiculed, i don't hate Bioware's modern games. Not even DA2. That may be because i'm clueless and easy to please, but if so, it works for me :lmao: Or then my fears are true, and i'm simplifying at the same rate as modern games

Is someone going to give me some evidence or something? A single forum post, blog, or anything? At all? It's not that hard, google is right there. I didn't think so.

Ah man, can't wait to play. But my Futureshop pre-order will be a day or two behind probably /first world problem Then again it does have that awesome metal case. Also for people not aware the DLC also contains a weapon or armor (forget), and skin for all characters in the game on top of the bonus skin from the collectors edition for all characters. Not bad for a ten dollar DLC.

Edit
I accidentally made my Shepard have too thick of a neck, it looks like he would snap the rope instead of being hung.

Edit
Truth be told you shouldn't be ridiculed for liking something on these forums. I have no idea why some of the people in this thread wont just leave if they don't like the game, and don't seem to have any intention of getting it.

They need your money. You don't need their product.

Which would be why I skip most DLC. Oblivion? Didn't bother with it. Finally got around to SI and KotN when I picked up a GotY copy years later. The Fallouts? Got the Pitt (had to, have family connections to Pittsburgh) and BS (because you can't get just $10 worth of MS Points). Skipped all the other FO3 and FO:NV.

ME2? Didn't even download all the "free" ones when they came out. Did eventually grab them, plus Arrival and Shadow Broker a month ago, when it became clear that there wasn't going to be a "complete" edition. Skipped everything from Dragon Age, as well.

Honestly, most of them end up seeming not worth it - minor stuff, for too much $. So yeah.... won't be bothering with this "day 1" squad member. If it's anything like Zaeed or ninja chick, it won't mean much. And honestly - having such a controvertial choice for a squad member doesn't seem like good plot, it seems like.... well, a money grab. Let's make something that sounds Really Cool!? They'll buy it! Which means it's probably silly. (The whole idea of it sounds silly to me, I can't imagine any possible lore excuse for it.)

So, no... I don't feel the need to get all worked up about companies putting out DLC to get some more money from people. It's certainly less mercenary than some of the other hobbies I've participated in. (Yes, I was a Magic player for over a decade. And I've played Games Workshop miniatures games. After both of those, many things seem cheap.)

(Disclaimer - I did get all five bits of Borderlands DLC. Those were worth it, except the Arena. Which I only got because it was a dual-pack on a disc that I bought from a game store.)

My male Shep has almost no lips. Very creepy when he talks. My female Shep's lips are so huge, they look like an ape's.

I guess I have a problem customizing mouths. . .

I don't think anyone will ridicule you here. I really enjoyed DA2. I think some people expect AMAZING things from games nowadays while others of us just like being entertained. Even if I get a good few days of entertainment from a game, that justifies £30 in my eyes. I don't think the devs owe me anything and if I hear things I don't like I don't buy it. Simple. I'll maybe voice my opinion on it but altogether I vote with my feet. :)

I think this might be the last Bioware game that I buy. I might still have a look at DA3 if Bioware fixes the flaws that DA2 had but I'm not happy with the Ripoff that EA is doing with the 1st day DLC for ME3. That content should've been on the disk, what a load of crap.

[Unspoilered because this is a non-spoiler thread, and people might get confused...]

Just to make it clear, I was turning a quote of gamgee's on him, in order to make a point: that it's not cool to imply that people are stupid/clever for buying/not buying X, Y or Z.

I don't think people are stupid if they make considered, informed decisions when they buy things, like povuhulo or Kiralyn, or even if they aren't that discriminate with their entertainment purchases. If you want to buy it, go ahead, but there's no way or reason to defend the practices involved.

I have no idea why some of the people in this thread wont just leave if they don't like the game, and don't seem to have any intention of getting it.

[Unspoilered because this is a non-spoiler thread, and people might get confused...]

Gamgee, you seem to be under the impression that one is only allowed to use this thread if one is going to buy the product and have glowing things to say. Well, guess what, this isn't the Bioware forums. Since we seem to be incapable of having a civil discussion with each other, let's drop it.

Like I said, I don't have any problem with it, mostly because it seems soooooo "Oooh, I'm Nifty! Buy me!" cynical money grab rather than meaningful content. Now, I haven't read up on whatever lore they invent to try to make it fit in, but just the concept itself seems nonsensical/irrational, and therefore not important cut content.

I guess I see the options as "Goofy squadmate as DLC" or "Nothing"; not "Goofy squadmate as DLC" vs "Goofy squadmate in base game". It really seems like some joke thing they whipped up as an easy sale, rather than cut content.

disclaimer - maybe it isn't a total ***pull, and they have good lore for it. But I'm doubtful.

Also yes, it might sound dumb, but unless you like Mass Effect/are discussing it then you do have to go. I made those rules myself a long time ago, and even the moderators understood that for some reason Mass Effect series always brings on the haters. We couldn't go a page without the topic devolving into flaming and bickering. Instead of the people who liked the game people would get roasted by all the people who hated it waiting for people to turn up and say they liked it. It got so out of hand the threads were locked down twice (the series of threads). I'm just trying to prevent it form getting to that point. It's okay to come in here and disagree/debate a little. But if people are going to keep coming back day after day to rail on people who are trying to share/discuss the series it gets annoying. They should be going and doing things they like, not wasting their time bothering people who are just enjoying a video game.

Nah not you oof, you did your best. Hell, tons better than most I meet. You actually stood up there and tried to prove your point. But I've seen a few offhand/backhand comments from others about me "defending" EA. No one wants to say anything. No one has any proof, or hard evidence, or logical thinking. Nothing, it bothers me.

I think there's also heavy cruisers. They're a new addition in ME3. Dev's confirmed a lore error in game. One of the NPC's shouts they blew up a Dreadnought. Via lore Dreadnoughts can't enter the atmosphere. What we seen was a Destroyer I believe. Though it could also be a Heavy Cruiser, I'm not entirely certain.

Also there seem to be two different sizes of Frigates. Larger vessels that are about 2.5x the size of the Normady II. And specialist craft that are smaller and faster like the Normandy. It's very likely other species might have their own stealth frigates or small ones like the Normandy. Despite the difference sin size and role they both fall under the frigate branch. Also the Alliance is said to be the only ones who use Carriers. No other species has this role in their fleet, and I don't think they've designed their own carrier ships by the time of ME3. There's no evidence to support it, but the full game may reveal otherwise.

Also remember I think at the time of ME1 Humanity only had like 9 Dreadnoughts. So if they do come on screen, keep it to one per species. Or if you want to go more by lore 1/2/3 Non-Counsel Species build one Dreadnought for every 2 Counsel Species. Turians get to build 3 for every 2 of the Salarians/Asari. I would find it unlikely humanity could commit more than one dreadnought to a theater of war unless it was a gigantic operation. The Salarians/Asari could commit 2 and Turians 3. Perhaps balance them in that aspect. The Turians have an okay baseline military, but their real specialty is they can call in 3 Dreadnoughts in the game (assuming they have resources). Alliance ships should be more maneuverable, and the Salarians more so.

It is silly. There is a lore excuse for it, and it's lame. :P I like how it looks, but apart from that?
Spoiler
The Jamaican/African hybrid accent doesn't do anything for me, either. I can already see the flame wars about perceived connotations, too. Some of which connotations I'm not sure one can escape. But let's not go there.

This I agree with. Thoroughly enjoyable game, and the DLC was almost all worth it.

Heavy cruisers and Heavy frigates thanks, that makes things easier.

As for the Dreadnought limit, I was thinking of giving the option to build the max speices limit and do with them as you please, Like humans only get nine max, but can deploy them all in one battle if they want. It makes things.....interesting.

If anyone knows anything about Alliance/Geth/Turian/Batarian/Merc ships or Reapers, please go ahead.

Alliance prefer a hit and run style of gameplay. They set up tons of lightly defended bases with lots of quick routes to them. So when one base goes silent a fleet can quickly mobilize and attack. They also retreat a lot to set up traps and feints. A mix of guerrilla and traditional warfare if you will. Often baiting enemies into their lines so they can out maneuver them even more. Carriers are unique to them, allowing them to hit from far away with great firepower. They were designed to circumvent the treaties limiting their dreadnoughts. So expect them to be suitably powerful if defended. Though up close I would expect them to be shredded easily. Most of the space would be needed for the fighter/bomber craft.

Geth are shield destroyers. They should get bonuses against shields for sure. They should also be very pricy, and a tad frailer than other species ships. However they have tons of ships to make up for it. No windows and since they can fold they can hold tons of troops and attack that way. They prefer to swoop out of nowhere and overwhelm people before any organized resistance can occur. Rapid firing weaponry that's good at long range attacks. Though it doesn't necessarily hit the hardest. Only the Quarians have more ships than them. Their limiting factors seem to be that they refuse to go total war. So balance them according more to a strike force, or scout flotilla than a true fleet. Or they would stand a good chance of mopping the floor with most of the Citadel species.

Turian would likely have the most skilled and veteran pilots of all the species. A large fleet, and overall one of the most powerful by how balanced it is. I get the feeling the Turians are slower to go to war since they prefer a total war. Hit the enemies planet, and never give it back style of war. Massive fleet movements to try and overwhelm enemies and crush them. Very disciplines. I'm unsure of their ship designs, but they would likely be on par with humanity in terms of combat effectiveness. Though as I said far more well trained and combat tested. Also larger, much much larger than anything the Alliance could field safely. Of the Citadel species they have the most dreadnoughts, and powerful ones too.

Reapers dreadnoughts outnumber the entirety of all species fleets ever. Ridiculously tough ships. Sovereign took down I believe 35 ships before being taken out. It's speculated that at least a few of those were Alliance Dreadnoughts. However it's unknown if he was in a weakened state when Shepard destroyed his avatar. It appeared to take his shields down. This is when they commenced the attack. It's very likely he could have destroyed much more ships if he had been focusing on them. Despite this insane level of durability the reaper knew it couldn't fight all of us. So they can be destroyed with massive sustained fire. They can ram through ships. They're much faster than any equivalent ship of their own. Their dreadnoughts can enter the atmosphere and perform turns that would shear other ships in half. So expect them to be maneuverable for their size. Over 2km in length only the Destiny Ascension came close to rivaling them. Have an series of advanced guns that look like lasers. What's actually happening is it's firing a stream of molten metal/shells so fast it looks like a laser. It hits harder than any ship and has been seen to take down any ship in one hit. He has at least six of these one in the tip of each leg. That's just their dreadnoughts.

Reaper Destroyers are the only other ship class shown and form the leaks will be the only other kind. Seem to vary from just under a kilometer to 1km in size. Much more faster and maneuverable than the dreadnought it's implied they have no problem catching up to and out maneuvering any other ships. In the game only the SR Normady is shown being able to truly out maneuver them. So they're much faster than the majority of ships. They pack a comparable load to their larger brethren. They must be weaker guns, but if they are there's no evidence to show it. It was a Destroyer who blew up another Destroyer in a single hit. They can enter the atmosphere and walk about much easier than their larger brethren. They also outnumber the dreadnoughts at least 2 to 1. Known to carry husks which they deliver onto the planet also similar to their larger brethren. At least one of the ship classes or both launch meteorites/pods/something which carry husks that land all over earth and look like meteoroids. It's very probable that Destroyers are the more likely of the two ship classes to commence boarding operations of high value targets.

If you need more help let me know.

Not apathy, really. It has things in it like (such as sarcastic Lady Hawke ) and things i don't (like the waves after waves of enemies and the shamelesly recycled dungeons) but i feel neither are prominent enough for me to use the extremes of "hate" or "love"
