Mysterious Traveler (spoiler)

Post » Sat Nov 17, 2012 1:25 am

I don't understand people saying "this makes the game better" and what not. Sure vampires and the stranger attacking towns is cool and all. But once it happens over and over or if you get unlucky and they kill off an entire town you are out of luck forever on that save. Guess you are just going to have to deal with empty towns for the rest of your game. Yea, real fun and cool.... All those quests and wares those npcs sold are out the window....

It's all lies ! The mysterious Traveler does not interact with NPC's at all, he only walks around and becomes hostile only when the PLAYER gets too close to him. He doesn't sneak and assassinate people in their beds , that would be uncalled for. There have been no report of such an event that can only be the product of rumors

Well I fast traveled to Dragonsreach to do some enchanting so that put me on the far side of the WhiteRun. When I went down into the Wind District the Mysterious Traveler had already killed three NPCs before I drove a Sword into him from behind. Seems he was moving fine without me showing up to kick start his animations and attack run. It was well on the way before I arrived.

I've encountered the traveler several times now. I've killed him and his thralls quite a few times in Whiterun. I also had an attack in Solitude with the Traveler, 2 gargoyles and a friggin dragon inside the city walls. It was awesome.
I do think there is something strange going on though because one day I noticed Belathors shop closed all day. So I pick the lock and who do I see? Belathor...dead as dead can be. I think its rare for the traveler to go in homes and shops but it does happen.

I've only had to load a save once because someone I liked died, and nobody else has ever died in over 250hr of playing. Vampires have only spawned about 4 times in that amount of time and only right in front of me. The one time I did reload was because of this MT, but it was because I walked outside of breezehome, and I attacked him but forgot that I had left all my weapons inside and he killed Adrianne Avenicci

I have read over this entire thread and am just trying to figure out what this Mysterious Traveler is. I take it this is a solitary vampire who according to some sneaks around at night in towns, debatably triggered by fast traveling?

Can I receive more information on this thing, please? Is it exclusive to a faction you join (like Dawnguard or Volkihar)? What PC level range does this thing spawn? Is the NPC name actually Mysterious Traveler? What does it look like? Lastly, what do you see it doing when you see it?

From what I've observed the MT is a nord male but can range in species. He's usually dressed in a Hooded Mage atire and has three Vampire Thralls with him. He's usually just standing there when you arrive and when you activate him he attacks with chain lightning spells that can one hit a NPC and maybe two or three times for the Guards. I'm playing around the 80s range and I've encountered him three times in Whiterun. I am playing the DawnGuard Faction.

Lol. Hit the nail on the head right there.

I"ve only seen him twice. Once in Markath, and the second time in Whiterun after I entered. I jumped the gun in kiling him and got in trouble with the po-po. And without my Thane card, so I reloaded (I'm too cheap to pay a fine) and he wasn't there. So, if he's killing folk unbeknownst to me, I'll have to check around.

Folks who are knowldegable about scripting with the CS will be able to answer how possible this is, I think. It would save a lot of this speculation. Of course, the true test will be when the DLC is released for PC so they can look at the actual script that it uses.

Were you a member of the Dawnguard? What did the MT look like? What lvl is that PC of yours?

I know in the beta version (we had to redownload DG when it released), he appeared to be a dunmer with the eyes and bat nose. He was wearing black mage robes and just milled around on the bridge between the market place and Mistveil Keep in Riften. He didn't do anything until I tried to talk (as this was my first encounter) and then he attacked. I was Dawnguard, but vampires have attacked towns as early as the very first (pre-faction join) mission.

Does VL or mysterious traveler still appear after you complete the Dawnguard questline? I'm asking because in my game, I haven't seen 'em.

On my dawnguard profile I still see the MT even though I beat the campaign.

On my VL profile I have yet to see him. I have not yet finished the VL compaign.

That's strange, as soon as I saw him in Riften I attacked him. The s*** hit the fan and the guards were on my side.

I've played through the Dawnguard story as both a Breton vampire hunter, & an Altmer vampire.
With the Breton I've seen him dozens of times. Killed him every time, & the only casualty to date, was Idolaf Battle-Born. Given that his cause of death was a crossbow bolt in the eye, I'm gonna say that was my fault.

I've run into him twice, with the Altmer vampire. On the first occasion I one-shot him with a dagger, the second time I let him hang around in the Whiterun marketplace while I did a bunch of smithing/tempering, & he didn't even become hostile until I got about three feet away from him, then he shouted "Fight, so your blood's warm" & pulled a dagger. At which point Jon Battle-Born killed him almost immediately. So I don't see how he's as dangerous as everyone says.

I agree. I can't wait until I play it on my PC and we get mods that solve this for us somehow.

I also agree. This sounds highly lame losing npc's an having the towns feel barren. The game already feels pretty barren tbh. I mean where are the traveling merchants or traveling caravans and whatnot o.O ?

...I'm gonna go look for a mod for that right now, lol...

It's complaining like this that will insure every town NPC will be marked as essential and we won't be able to kill anyone other than enemies. It's not that bad. When I beta tested Dawnguard, I hardly lost a soul. Do you know why? It's called not fast traveling (took carriages or walked) and doing a damn sweep of the city before moving on.

i agree. I haven't really looked into this MT. But, people need to stop the whining over a little freedom of having NPC's killed. It's actually one of the first things i've heard in a while that makes Skyrim immersive.

Interesting how he didn't sneak into any houses, & murder anyone. He just stood there, until the PC got too close, & then turned hostile. And only towards the PC.
