Mysterious Traveler (spoiler)

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 10:15 pm

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea of a vampire sneaking around at night trying to feed, it's awesome. But I seriously wish that the NPC's he killed weren't gone for good, I lost almost all the merchants in Whiterun, 2 priests, 3 Battle-born and 2 Grey-mane. That's a lot of people. He could have at least taken Nazeem with him.
I only caught him in the end because he went after Aela, which raised a **** storm in Jorrvaskr.

But he respawns, that was just one killing spree.

I did not enjoy seeing Whiterun so barren, so I reloaded a save from 5 hours earlier and caught him right away.

Great idea, poor implementation.

If Bethesda maybe added Vampire hunters to the MT event that would seek him out in the city and find him, that would cut down on losses a lot and make things more enjoyable.

That's the point, it's supposed to feel awful that vampires are coming into these towns and killing the citizens, if they didn't it would be boring! That's what makes the vampires more suspenseful and threatening.

I agree. I can't wait until I play it on my PC and we get mods that solve this for us somehow.

I heard he can enter buildings, if that is true, can he enter my house?

I heard he can enter buildings, if that is true, can he enter my house?

This is one of the problems with the MT, why people hate him so much. He sneaks into town, and follows people into their homes and kills them quietly. In a single night he can kill an entire town if nobody catches him. You can walk out of your house after making potions all night or getting cozy with your spouse to find the marketplace empty because everyone was assassinated.

I don't know if he will enter your house, since he usually follows people into their homes. If you are married though and your spouse enters your home for the night, he could follow him/her in and kill them.

And to SerenaLover, there is no fun in an entire town of non-respawning, unessential merchants/quest-givers/potential followers-spouses/radiant targets getting killed because you couldn't be bothered to check every single building in the town to make sure he wasn't hiding (and even if you do that he could spawn at any time which means you have to be constantly checking every time you change cells). I'm cool with people dying from a dragon or vampire attack, that is a fight, there is warning and a way to stop it. This is assassination that can only be prevented by the search I said above, or being in the right place at the right time.

We all love a good challenge. I want to be concerned about a vampire attacking the city, but I don't want to be absolutely paranoid that the next time I return the city will be dead.

EDIT: One more reason why this is a terrible implementation. Bethesda boasts that Skyrim has 300+ hours of gameplay in it, I myself pour about 400-600 hours into a single character on the console, when I get a PC that works well and starting modding the game, that will easily sky-rocket to 6-700 hours per game. The MT is an infinite occurrence, spawning completely at random in any city that you happen to be in the close vicinity of, you don't even need to be in the city, i.e. you are outside the DB sanctuary and Falkreath comes under attack from an MT. In a single visit to a town he can kill upwards of 5 people in a night, the attack on Whiterun in my game occurred during a two night period (not sure if this is a bug, it seems like it since on another save he only kills one and leaves). While the rate of him spawning is unknown right now, over the course of a 100 hour game you can lose most of the towns to him if you don't take the time out to search every building in the city (that is time consuming and redundant). The longer you play, the more chance that he will kill entire towns, simple logic. This is counter-intuitive to the game.

They should have made the guards be able to detect these types of threats. I'm not saying they should get him every time, but enough to the point that we the players don't have to find him every time.

It's all lies ! The mysterious Traveler does not interact with NPC's at all, he only walks around and becomes hostile only when the PLAYER gets too close to him. He doesn't sneak and assassinate people in their beds , that would be uncalled for. There have been no report of such an event that can only be the product of rumors

Dude, that's why people are complaining. It happens all the time.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to link a thread from a competing forum, so if not just edit this out.

They've been talking extensively about it over there. If it's a bug that he goes into houses it is a serious bug.

I've only seen him 3 times and I watched him forever.

He doesn't do anything except attack you when he sees you! He doesn't talk to people, he doesn't try to feed, he doesn't even attack people until he sees you!!!!!!

It's complaining like this that will insure every town NPC will be marked as essential and we won't be able to kill anyone other than enemies. It's not that bad. When I beta tested Dawnguard, I hardly lost a soul. Do you know why? It's called not fast traveling (took carriages or walked) and doing a damn sweep of the city before moving on.

NeoPenPen, to be fair though it shouldn't be needed. His damage on a town should at least be limited to a couple of people tops.

I never fast travel. I use carriages to the nearest hold if a destination is far away. He doesn't spawn on fast travel though, he spawns when you enter a city cell, whether it is outside the city or in it. He can spawn in the city if you enter the cell right outside the Whiterun gate.

EDIT: I actually need to verify that last statement, it's an assumption on my part because I've seen people killed by him immediately after entering the city. However, it holds true for towns without walls.

Don't believe me then. I'm not the only one who is telling you that they attack people. To be fair, I've never watched him, I've only seen him a few times. I've noticed that the killing usually happens while I am busy with something else, inside a building, or sleeping/waiting in a city.

He only attacks if the Dragonborn comes to close. A lot of people like to lie about his behaviour.

If he/she/it can enter your house, I'm sure that either you or your wife/houseband/housecarl will handle the intruder just fine. The point is if it kills NPCs who are essential for major quests, or that have keys to important places.

Most players fast travel, plus fast travel is built into the game. Telling people to not use it is kind of dumb. And having to sweep a city every time you stop by one to see if npcs are being killed is horrible.

Does anyone know how to spawn the mysterious traveler? I haven't seen him once, I've only had to deal with vampire raids so far. Is there a specific level for him to spawn or something? I'm at level 49. I suppose being a vampire has nothing to do with it, since towns are still being attacked by vampires or is that something that stops that guy from spawning.

It's really amusing that half the people say he does nothing and the other half is talking about how he's killed people in their towns.

EDIT: It's beginning to sound like the MT killing people in their homes is unintended. And I think I know how its happening. I've noticed a bug in the game now since installing Dawnguard where people who are outside near a door will enter a building with you, at most I've had 4 people walk in the building with me at the same time. There is usually a 3-5 second delay before they fade in. I am thinking that if the MT enters a building like that and you leave without noticing him, he might engage the people inside. That could account for the dead bodies inside homes and shops.

Can someone test this out? I haven't been able to find an MT in awhile, so if anyone does test this out and see if the people getting attacked are ones you just interacted with.

The people at gamefaqs saying he kills people are trolling, the ones saying he kills people at night never have any proof and the others just say he only walks around doing nothing until he aggros on you. Every single night I go into a town I walk around with Detect Dead and he never enters any houses at all.

I've never seen him and I've had Dawnguard since its 360 release. But then again the only town I really visit is Whiterun and I only use a few shops there so....
