New Firefox Update

Pale Moon does seem to be using less resources than FF. Maybe I'll try this on my desktop too.

EDIT: much faster loading pages too.

I gave up with Firefox, too many updates and too many problems with add-ons breaking, plus as said the scrolling was anything but smooth.. I now use http://www.palemoon.org/, a Fx based browser that is optimised for Windows. The smooth scrolling set up on it is very good and with the next release should be even better.
I've been using it for a while, and it seems to go slower than Firefox on my computer. I compared the two and Pale Moon seems to be going 10% slower than Firefox.
Any ideas on why this is happening?

EDIT: Also, when switching tabs, it gets a jumpy, like a framerate drop, and takes a while (in terms of a browser) to display the entire page.

Great, a bunch of scripting stuff in the Yahoo! web-based mail client is broken as of Firefox v13. I'm getting a little frustrated with Firefox as well. I was doing some site testing with various browsers a few days ago and even IE9 feels faster than recent releases of Firefox. Mozilla, whahappen?

No idea, go ask on the http://forum.palemoon.org/index.php. Moonchild, the guy behind it all is usually around to help and answer questions. He is very hands on with problems.

A better question is why are you using a webmail service that doesn't offer SSL encryption... Maybe Firefox purposefully broke it to get people off them :P

I use ESR firefox at work (deployed), and Firefox is strictly my backup browser at home. Personally I like the inclusion of the speed dial in Firefox native now, though I've not seen how bad or good Firefox's smooth scrolling is. It's never been terribly good in my opinion, but isn't there an option to scontroll how much it scrolls in Firefox? Probably somewhere in about:config. Increasing that value could probably help with any "lag"

Well, that didn't work, it perma-banned me upon login.

It automatically entered my e-mail in the username box so I thought that it would accept an email. It said I had the wrong user name so I entered the correct one, and bam! Down comes the banhammer.

The (not so) smooth scrolling on Firefox always seemed worse on these forums than elsewhere, on some sites it works quite well.

http://forum.palemoon.org/download/file.php?id=124&mode=view so you can set the parameters yourself if you don't like what you have, a feature Firefox doesn't have.

You can always set those manually in any Mozilla browser by typing "about:config" in the address bar. I'm liking it so far. I used the 64 bit installation choice and its pretty quick. I ran a little http://www.fabulant.com/downloadcenter/benchjs/benchjs.html and it was faster than Opera, Chrome and IE9.

It's the account I use when I don't want to use my real e-mail address for something. There's nothing sensitive in there.

Looks just like Firefox, can be configured to your requirements like Firefox, accepts all add ons that Firefox does - in fact you can say it is Firefox with a lot of the "useless stuff" removed that Mozilla add to keep up with Chrome and to allow its use on other operating systems. I was doubtful about it when I decided to give it a go but am glad I made the change, and it is very fast.

Hmm, that seems to address both my biggest gripes with Firefrog and my main reason for not moving. I really need to check it out.

Gave this Pale Moon thing a try, but I can't get Flash to work, which is a bit of a deal-breaker. More Firefrog for me then, sadly. :(

Yeah, Firefox has, over the years, become more and more annoying, for various reasons. But so far it's still the only browser I can stand. I've tried others and nope, don't like them.

PaleMoon sounds interesting, I'll try it some time...but I'll probably stick to FF until they do something that annoys me so much I quit them in disgust.

And I've always disliked "smooth scrolling" in any application that has it. I turn it off in Windows, too.

Running Firefox 13.0 I found that it crashes very often compared to Firefox 12.

I've found mine freezes up a lot, which is annoying. I might have to give Pale Moon a try.

To me it was the opposite and very annoying.

I was still stuck on 6.0, wow. :ermm:

Now that I've downloaded 13, I think I'll take a break from Chrome for a bit and play with this. I really like the smooth scrolling, looks good imo. The one thing I don't like is the great orange firefox box up in the top left, it's hideous. Seriously, if they just put a small firefox logo that did the same thing as the firefox button, that'd be sixy. I should work for Mozilla, just for that golden piece of redesign advice.

Managed to get Flash to work, finally: dunno why it wouldn't install properly, but copying Firefrog's plugins folder to the Pale Moon installation folder (even though I installed the 64 bit version of the latter) has got it working. So I'll use it for a bit and see how I get on...

You can submit that advice as feedback, although I think the box looks nice. Maybe a new theme?

Never knew about smooth scrolling but thanks to the update I now know of it and actually sort of like it

That is easily sorted with an add-on. http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/9751/20120608202911.jpg shows the change with Aurora, although if you are using Firefox then obviously the Fx logo shows. Done with two add-ons "Moveable FireFox Button" and "App Button Clear"

I turned off the smooth scrolling (which was always an option, the update just seems to have it turned on by default) and changed the new tab back to about:blank.

Same here, I had it off and the new update turned it back on.

I immediately noticed the smoother scrolling and I dont see what the problem is. A genuine improvement for a change.

It's not a new feature though. I guess I prefer when each notch of my mouse wheel moves the screen instantly, rather than waiting for the pointless animation.

I'm not a fan, personally. It feels squishy. I'm accustomed to rolling my mouse wheel a certain amount to get to a certain place on the page.

I use https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/app-button-clear/?src=http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1380099-new-firefox-update/api to make it clear.

Generally getting on okay with Pale Moon now, it seems to be a slight but noticeable improvement over Firefrog in terms of performance. There is another niggle though, which is its insistence on continually changing the spellcheck dictionary back to US English! If anyone knows how to make it stay on UK English for more than half an hour, please tell me...

Edit: removing the en-US files from the dictionaries/ folder looks like it might do the trick, though I'm not sure how sensible that is.
