New Firefox Update

Post » Thu Jun 14, 2012 8:02 am

I gave up with Firefox, too many updates and too many problems with add-ons breaking, plus as said the scrolling was anything but smooth.. I now use http://www.palemoon.org/, a Fx based browser that is optimised for Windows. The smooth scrolling set up on it is very good and with the next release should be even better.

Strange, I've just installed PM just to see how it is and one thing I've notice is that it doubles the resources it uses than FF. My FF, with the same amount of open pages, take about 333,000k while PM takes up about 733,000k. Am I doing something wrong?

Ask in the http://forum.palemoon.org/index.php. :) I use far less in the way of resources and memory.

Ok, thanks:)

UPDATE: Lol, I tried to register with PM and it says they don't accept AOL email addresses. Oh, well.

Does middle clicking to scroll not work for anyone else? I used to use it all the time and now it doesn't work. I tried running FF in safe mode (all add-ons disabled) and that doesn't fix it either. Does anyone know a solution?

That's because still using aol for your email service is a problem in and of itself that you should fix first. Seriously, it's not only insecure, but also proven to hurt your chances of getting a job if that's your main email address.

The reason, I am informed, is that 99% of spammers use AOL and the admin of that forum were dealing with several a day and having to remove them. Surely you have more than one email address?

LOL. I guess is my loyal side of me that makes me still cling to AOL. AOL was my first internet service in 2001 and knew about its existence since the 90's when I was in art school. Although, I got rid of their internet service many years ago because they raised my monthly charge without letting me know about it. I only kept the email service which was free.

Anyways, which email service do you think is best? and what's with the problem with businesses not liking AOL email? Is there something I missed in the news?

To @Rohugh: Yeah I've Yahoo mail and I better check how that's going since I haven't used that email service in ages, and the reason why I have Yahoo mail is because back in the day Ebay wanted two emails to register.

Btw, thanks for explaining the spammer situation with AOL. I wasn't aware of the severity of all this. I haven't had problems with spammers since AOL automatically sends all spam to my spam folder. I thought all email services had spam problems.

Proof? I used an AOL email for my Battle.net login for years and never had either account hacked (while some people with Blizzard authenticators got their WoW accounts hacked). I never got 1/10 the random spam in that account I did with Hotmail or Yahoo! accounts (granted, I only used it for my WoW login) and it seems to have all the usual security features any free email would.

It worked for me in FF 13. I think you can correct it in Windows control panel for your mouse.

E-mail service do indeed have spam filters and they stick the majority into the spam box so you never get to see it. What PM are saying is that the majority of spammers who register on their forum do so with an AOL address and the other "normal" members use other services to join like Gmail or Hotmail. I had no idea about AOL and as the mods do not get to see email addresses on these forums I can't say if it is so here.

I see. So the "bad guys" have AOL addresses at PM, lol. I don't blame them, they're correct in not accepting AOL addresses in their case. I would have done the same thing. I'm going to use my Yahoo mail after I reactivate my account since they told me a minute ago that I've been absent for too long. Oh well, I've been absent for 4 years, is that bad?, lol.

This was it, thanks. I must have disabled it when I went to turn off smooth scrolling again (since FF13 enabled it by default).

Proof:AOL doesn't use SSL encryption. Spam has nothing to do with security, and even to a degree has little to do with how public your email address is, but rather has to do with how coherent your email address is (Yahoo!, though, isn't much better than AOL for also not giving you SSL encryption). Incidently, though, Yahoo! has the worst spam filter out of all the major email providers (Hotmail used to have a horrible one, but was significantly improved with the introduction of Windows Live).

As far as security features are concerned: Gmail and Windows Live are leaps and bounds better than AOL and Yahoo! There's literally no comparison between the two because the gap is so huge. (one-time passwords, two-factor authentication, log-in tracking, SSL encryption, computer-locked login, etc)

As for the other: http://dailyworth.com/posts/784-Want-a-New-Job-Ditch-That-Old-Email-. Basically, AOL and Yahoo in particular (As well as Hotmail, though @live.com not so much) make you look old and tech-illiterate. You'll find various articles on this matter all over the place quoting various job interviewers and HR employers (that was just the first one i found in a quick google search).

Do free webmail services generally offer it? Would the average user even know anything about it (I didn't)? It sounds like you may be branding it as having a fault by pointing out an encryption protocol that free email usually doesn't support anyway. Even if it did it sounds like the server the sent mail is copied to isn't totally secure. I'm sure its important to your business/industry and you have third party email clients and security protocols set up, but that might not be the case for a private individual using a webmail service.

Hotmail/Windows Live and Gmail offer it. Yahoo and AOL don't. The important thing is the login cookie is encrypted. Yahoo and AOL request this token in-the-clear which makes it easily interceptable, at which point anyone using Firesheep/getting their MiTM on can log into your email, at which point they basically have access to all your online accounts.

Also the information in your link is about a year older than it should be, in 2010 Google started encrypting email sent to their servers. In fact, http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=13287. Intercepting server-to-server communication on gmail servers would have a lot more negative fallout than just your email.

Jeez, my girlfriend told me the other day, "baby, does this dress make me look old?". Now I have to tell her, "honey, does AOL make me look old?"

This is still kind of going over my head (and sorry for the thread jack). I use an Operamail (Fastmail) webmail account. I don't use the Opera email client. Do you know if my email has encryption (if I'm just using the Opera webmail)?

It looks like it's all secure, http://blog.fastmail.fm/2010/11/01/secure-login-is-now-always-the-default-login-method/ (I can't verify this, though, since I don't have an account with them)

Not sure because I use a Firefox variant but I had that happen to me once because of an old Java plugin. Somehow it didn't update right. I would check that.

Anytime I have a video or stream going, it disfigures the video when scrolling. Not sure if Firefox or Flash's problem.

Known Firefox problem with the latest Flash update. If you haven't updated yet it is best to wait.

Indeed I have updated. Wish I knew earlier.

Thanks for the link, though!
