NHL Thread #8

For me the most interesting game tonight will be SJ @ DAL. Playoff spots on the line on that one. :) Looking forward for a hell of a battle. I think the Sharks will prevail in that one, though.

It's a pity if Dallas still doesn't quite make it to the playoffs. They have a great team. The league is insanely tough nowadays. Your team has to be pretty much perfect to even get to the playoffs, not to mention to win the Cup!

Also looking forward for my Flyers to go to MSG. I expect Rangers to be perfect there as usual and winning the game. :( I say a big praise of Rangers' goodness this season goes to Del Zotto. That kid is a very point-hungry defenseman. I thought he's an offensive-minded D-man star in the making the first time I saw him touch the puck in 2009-10!

The Sharks have been horribly inconsistent, that might be a game worth watching.

Thank christ for that because it looks like my Kings (and the Sharks) seasons are going to be decided by their home-and-home this week.

Yes, and Kings actually have the chance against an inconsistent team. They just made the franchise record of 11 shutouts. Quick has 10 of those. San Jose has a very good team though, and I still think they're pulling it together and getting to playoffs. I'm guessing the home-and-home series against the Kings ends 1-1 and they're both going to make it. Too bad for Stars. Stars also have a very tough last week, going against Sharks again, then Nashville and St. Louis...

Ouch, I hadn't seen the Stars schedule. That's rough indeed.

While I'm on the topic of posting videos, does anyone remember http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eYeH5QNvvU Back when Crosby was a a little snot :P This kind of stuff makes my heart warm, no matter who it happens to. But it happening to an 18 year old Crosby made it all the better.

Not good to hear about Boychuk. I don't believe it was an intentional Knee on knee though, you could even see Asham cringing at the replay.

Whatever. I'm glad this game counted for nothing. Pens are gonna get beat up by the Flyers in the first round anyway.

I'm guessing Khudobin will probably start on Thursday, then Timmy will start the final game of the season before the play offs. Then again, they could always give Timmy a taste of whats to come, but who knows. It'll nice to see what Khudobin can do at the NHL level.

Mmm, I'm pretty sure Sid only had 2 goals and 1 assist.

I stand corrected. I noted his points, not his assists.

A tough loss to the Rangers, they need to find away to beat them or hope they get knocked out by another team because there's no getting past them in the playoffs.

Pretty much yeah. The only things that could help us were a healthy blueline, healthy playoff glory Briere, and Ilya playing out of his mind. He looked rusty as hell on that Rangers game though. His positioning and moving didn't look at all like the Bryzgalov I know. :/ He'll become good again. He'll have to.

Well, whadoyaknow, I prophetized the evening's results right! Too many games and too little time to check all the goals this time around, though. Only checked NYR @ PHI. Didn't look good...

And was a -1 on the game.

I'm so glad the the Bruins aren't a team that relies on the Powerplay. I remember a few years ago, when Sedin (rightly) won the MVP, and the runners up were Crosby and Ovechkin, Ovechkin was a +45 and Crosby a +15. How could anyone have picked Crosby over Ovechkin? Seriously? I love the +/- stat- it's so important.

Flyers Assistant Craig Berube on Crosby and Malkin:

http://youtu.be/XtPA7URfAWQ?t=2m15s

This video at the point shown in the link I gave shows exactly what transpired between Crosby and Schenn in real time, where Schenn went right after Crosby following Crosby's late hit up high, Crosby gets whacked, he even dove, and Berube points out the same thing Don Cherry and I do which is he runs his mouth too much, he goes around starting trouble, no wonder he winds up getting hurt.

Really wish Crosby would stick to playing his skill game and staying away from this stuff. He's still got a long way to go on the maturity front. Malkin though is only a semi-surprise, he does get away with a lot but he doesn't chirp like Crosby does nor does he consistently get in people's faces. He just get involved in some heated battles.

We’re loving all of this here in Pittsburgh! Crosby’s supposed to be the “whiny baby” but it’s Laviolette who is whining, and Brerie who is whining, and Berube who is whining. Hey, Philly, you guys won the game! Hey, Philly, you might even have the better team! All of your whining makes you sound hypocritical.

We’re waiting to see who from the Flyers organization whines tomorrow.

It certainly adds for hyping their next meetup but also understand the context in which Berube points this out -- he was bombarded not with questions about Philly's ability to further in the playoffs this year or how great it felt to win but everything about the Crosby-Schenn-Briere-brawl-coach occurrences. The media sure is funny how non-subtle they are. :P

So true. It's taken on a life of it's own. Not many care about the actual game anymore. It's all about the passion, the hatred, the joy. You despise your rival's jersey. That why Max Talbot is dead to me ;) That's also why I love the fact that Sidney Crosby plays for my team. If he played for anyone else, I would loathe him.

Yeah, that's how see it. Philly's not whining. Berube is asked some questions and he's answering them. Through orange-black-and-white shades, of course. Also, an important part of coach's work, all in all, is to give angry comments on situations they see went wrong. I also fail to see what's whining in pointing that someone (Sid) is continuously running his mouth in the rink and getting into trouble, even though he should be so much better than that. You want some whining from Philly fans? How about this: I don't accept those soccer-like filming dives in the hockey field. Hockey should be better than that. Crosby should be better than that.

Anxiously, anxiously looking forward for playoffs! Without a doubt the hottest first-round match-up.

Yea, but the Nashville/Detroit series in the West is also pretty juicy.

Yeah the Wings/Preds series will be one decided simply by which Red Wings team shows up. The Preds don't stand much a chance if the Wings team that showed up later in the 3rd period of the Wings/Blues game shows up, or like that of the last Wings/Preds series. The Blues team are quite a surprise this season but I'm very very sceptical of them in the playoffs. I don't think they make it past the semifinals. Two teams that generally perform better of late in the playoffs are the Sharks and Hawks. The Canucks will be a tough team again. The East is interesting too.. Flyers, Penguins, Bruins. The Penguins have the skill ability to beat anyone, but are riddled with horrendous inconsistency and have shown to falter against physical teams like the Flyers and Bruins. The Rangers have more to prove than anyone else in the playoffs, finishing so highly in the reg season and without a doubt they're the running favourites to be the first down in an upset, but that wouldn't be much of an upset since everyone would see it coming. Panthers.. if they do play the Devils which looks very likely, I see them bowing out, but expectations for them were already low.

If the playoffs started today, or with the standings this morning, the series' I think would be most exciting are:

(4) Penguins vs. (5) Flyers
(4) Wings vs. (5) Predators
(1) Canucks vs. (8) Sharks

The Rangers vs. Caps actually does favour the Rangers without a doubt, but if the Sabres can squeeze in and push the Caps out, they have plenty of upset potential.. they both have pretty difficult finishing games, Sabres have Flyers/Bruins left, Caps have Panthers/Rangers. Too bad the Jets are eliminated, their remaining games are nice.

Well I figured that if, by an off chance, I was right then I'd look like a genius to my friends :P
