[REl] NMM to Wrye Bash Adapter

Post » Fri May 25, 2012 7:54 am

NMMtoWrye is a tool that allows to use NMM's installer (with support for omod and fomod) with Wrye BAIN.

  • Use Nexus Mod Manager
    • To download and update mods from skyrim- or tesnexus
  • Use Wrye Bash Installer
    • To install mods without fomod installers
    • To manage, uninstall and delete mods
  • Use NMM, NMMtoWrye and BAIN
    • To install mods with fomod installers

http://skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=4688

Migration from previous version
  • Replace the exe, but keep the xml file.

Setup
  • Install Wrye Bash
    • Wrye Bash will ask you for a folder to store the mod data
    • After the first start, Wrye Bash creates a folder "Skyrim Mods", that will store the mod data. Find it!
    • On Windows 7, by default this is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Mods
    • In this setup, I will refer to this folder as %SkyrimMods%
  • Download this file
    • Place the two files from the archive (NMMtoWrye.exe and .xml) in the same folder as "Wrye Bash.exe"
    • Usually, this is "skyrim/Mopy"
  • Install Nexus Mod Manager
    • If you were are already using NMM, copy all mods from the old mod directory to the new one. You also should uninstall all mods to have a clean migration.
    • Set up the following values either during installation or in the settings dialog
      • Mod Directory: %SkyrimMods%\Bash Installers
      • Installer Info: %SkyrimMods%\Install Info
      • Skyrim Directory: %SkyrimMods%\TempData
      • Custom Launch Command: Path to NMMtoWrye.exe, either absolute or relative to %SkyrimMods%\TempData, in my setup it is "..\..\skyrim\Mopy\NMMtoWrye.exe"
      • Check "Close Nexus Mod Manager after launching game" in the "General" tab.
  • Open nmmtowrye.xml with your favorite text editor
    • Replace all %SkyrimMods% with the proper path
    • Careful: the paths should be similar to what you set up in NMM, but some specify additional subfolders.

Installing a mod from Nexus
  • Download the mod with Nexus Mod Manager
  • If it has no install script
    • Open Wrye Bash
    • Install the mod with BAIN
  • If it has an installer
    • Install the mod with NMM
      • You can install multiple mods, they will be packaged into one for BAIN
    • Click "Launch Custom Skyrim" to open this tool
      • If NMM asks you whether it should close now, click yes.
      • The dialog should show you the name of the mod you just installed; if not, something went wrong
      • You can change the name, but be careful not to overwrite the original file
      • Set compression to Ultra if this is a very large mod
    • Click "Add to BAIN"
      • This tool will package the configured mod for BAIN and uninstall it from NMM
    • In BAIN, install the BAIN-ready version of the mod

Interesting!

I'm guessing it works by detecting the changes NMM makes to the Data directory, then making a BAIN package out of that?

Interesting!

I'm guessing it works by detecting the changes NMM makes to the Data directory, then making a BAIN package out of that?

Exactly. Thus, my tool will not work for install scripts that do automated dependency checks (does this exist?), but I will think about this once it becomes an issue.

Try deleting this file, it is probably empty, which seems to confuse NMM. It was created because you executed the tool without having installed mods in NMM.

I've set up NMM exactly as you've described, gone into the .xml file and fixed the paths, but I get this error after it generates the mod package (Better Females by Bella - Better Females by Bella Version 3 3 BAIN-ready) and I click "Add to BAIN":

"Could not find a part of the path 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Mods\NMM\Data'."

Easily remedied by adding a Data folder to the NMM folder. So I did that. Then no more errors, and the "Better Females by Bella - Better Females by Bella Version 3 3 BAIN-ready.7z" file is created just fine. Only it's 4 KB and has nothing but 'InstallLog.xml' and a little Data folder (completely empty) in it. This isn't what's supposed to happen, I'd guess xD

Edit: I should add that I've already been using NMM before and had already installed mods using it.
Okay, so looking at this:

Interesting!

I'm guessing it works by detecting the changes NMM makes to the Data directory, then making a BAIN package out of that?

I'm deducing that to fix this, I have to set my skyrim directory back to what it used to be, uninstall the mods, change skyrim directory to %Skyrim Mods%/NMM and reinstall all the mods and THEN launch custom Skyrim. Will try that out now.

Edit2: I started getting CTDs after trying this. I have no idea whether or not what's been done here actually has anything to do with the CTDs, but I doubt it does. I've uninstalled Skyrim and am reinstalling it now to try again with a fresh slate. Thank goodness for unlimited bandwidth. At first I thought it was possibly PISE causing the CTDs because of the Strings folder thing, but I double-checked that and that wasn't the case. To make sure, I disabled all of my mods with Wrye Bash, and still I got CTDs. Hmmm.

Seems to me like the Skyrim Directory is not set up correctly in NMM. It must install the files somewhere, and when the Data folder is not there, it must be somewhere else.

If you were using NMM before and change all the paths in the settings, NMM should forget it ever installed anything. Bash will overwrite all files that were previously installed, so uninstalling everything in NMM shouldn't be necessary.

I'm just guessing, though. Could someone else share their experience with migrating from NMM?

My laptop is out of commission for now (unrelated problem) but for when it's working again, I'd like to ask: When do I know whether or not I have to use this tool, without having to first give it a shot in NMM?

For example, I know there's an installer for Isoku's Deadly Spell Impacts, Schlangster & Team's SkyUI, and Gopher's iHUD, but only because I'd been using NMM for them before or they explicitly state in descriptions that they'd have installers.

Most mods tell you if they have an install script. If you are not sure, select the mod in BAIN and look at the "skipped files" tab. If there's an omod or fomod folder, and there are several other files listed which seem like they should be installed, then there's an installer.

After I figured out the typo error from the included readme it seemed like everything was going fine until I click add to BAIN, then I get 7 zip failed:exit code 1. I've ensured that nothing else TES related is open and dug around my processes and don't see anything that could cause this error. Even went so far as to reinstall 7 zip with a newer version. Any ideas?

Yes the archive was created in the Bash Installers folder containing InstallLog.xml and nothing else. BAIN doesn't know what to do with it.

Seems like 7zip couldn't find the Data folder. I uploaded a new version that checks whether the folder exists.

Strange. So I tried the new version. The first thing I had to do was rename the Nexus Mod Manager folder to NMM. Not a big deal, but, not the default name structure. At that point I had to go through and reset all of the folders since NMM no longer remembered my settings, not a big deal and I am guessing it has to do with changing the naming structure. I went through uninstalled the mod I was working with, (SkyUI) and reinstalled with NMM, launched custom Skyrim and it seemed like it did what it was supposed to. No more 7zip error. The archive was created this time including the xml and a data folder. In the data folder are 7zip-64bit.dll and LISCENSE.rtf. BAIN still doesn't know what to do with it.

At this point I closed BAIN leaving the file intact, and tried opening NMM again. No go, it gave an error message and this bug report:
Trace file has been created: TraceLog20120105161044.txtMod Manager Version: 0.12.18.0OS version: Microsoft Windows NT 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1Tracing is forced: FalseTracing an Unhandled Exception:Exception:Message:Can not load 7-zip library or internal COM error! Okay easy enough opened the NMM folder and inserted the data folder with the dll from the BAIN ready folder it installed and tried again. Deleted the BAIN ready archive and installed with NMM again. Launch custom Skyrim and again it looked like it did something. Opened up BAIN. The BAIN ready archive is still grey and unable to install. Inside the archive are the XML and once again the data folder with the dll and liscense. NMM error with this buglog:

Apparently, you got something wrong during the setup. What happen in your case is that N2W packaged and deleted 7zip from your NMM installation.

In nmmtowrye.xml, is not to refer to the data folder in the NMM installation (I wasn't even aware this exists, apparently it contains the 7zip dll), but should refer to the data folder within the directory that is set up as "Skyrim Directory" in NMM. Which is not your actual Skyrim directory! In fact, these folders shouldn't even exist when you set this up.

I'm sorry if the readme wasn't clear about that.

The Skyrim directory in NMM was missing the \NMM, my bad. It works as it should and installed SkyUI for me with one of the non-default icon sets. Kudos.

BUT...

Upon trying to start NMM again I have to throw a copy of that data folder with the 7zip dll into it. This makes no sense what so ever, and I don't know what else could have gone wrong. The only thing I can think of, I have an old install of OBMM on my F drive, (not just a partition, but, a seperate harddrive) which I use for storage. I use that location as a clean back up folder of Morrowind and Oblivion. I didn't delete it as per NMM install instructions, but it is on a seperate storage only disk. What else could it be? I can deal, but it might be good to find out if any one else experiences it.

On a side note, I'm glad you removed the typo from the read me, but, it is still a mess if you don't maximize it.

I slowly start to understand your setup. Let me guess:

Your NMM is installed in %somewhere%\NMM (originally %somewhere%\Nexus Mod Manager)
In the config, 'Skyrim Directory' is set to %somewhere%\NMM. It was set to %somewhere% previously, when things did not work at all and you renamed the "Nexus Mod Manager" folder.
in the n2w.xml, is set to %somewhere%\NMM\data.

%somewhere%\NMM\data is the folder where NMM stores the 7zip dll, but in your configuration, it is also the folder where mods are installed to. N2W then grabs all files from there, including 7zip. Check the package in BAIN, the dll should be in there.

If this is right, here is what you do:
Set 'Skyrim Directory' to %somewhere%\NMM\Temp and to %somewhere%\NMM\Temp\Data.

If my guess is wrong or this does not help, please PM me your .xml and NMM-configuration.

Spoiler

NMM settings

Mod directory: D:\Games\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim Mods\Bash Installers

Install Info: D:\Games\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim Mods\Install Info

Skyrim directory: D:\Games\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim Mods\NMM <this is the area I forgot to add after renaming the folder
command: d:\games\valve\steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\mopy\nmmtowrye.exe
xml="" text:=""
D:\Games\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim Mods\Install Info\InstallLog.xml
D:\Games\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim Mods\NMM\Data
D:\Games\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim Mods\Bash Installers

Blue being the area I changed in the xml everything else was straight out of the box.

So seeing what do you think? I'll have to check it tomorrow, it's late here.

To quote the error message you postet earlier, NMM tries to load 7zip from
D:\Games\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\Skyrim Mods\NMM\data\7z-64bit.dll
which is exactly the folder NMM uses for installing mods, and which N2W packages and deletes.

So yes, it's exactly as I said.

Derari I'm sorry but did not try your suggestion. I ran into a problem with NMM not downloading correctly so I reinstalled it elsewhere with the default name. After that I downloaded the latest version of your tool and followed the readme to letter and everything works perfectly as it should. Thank you for taking the time and putting up with me trying to get this working. It does exactly what it is supposed to do, and now that I have tried it I also see the bennefit of NMM for downloading and updating. I have endorsed this file on nexus.

Used Wrye Bash years ago with Oblivion, but am a little foggy on the details..

Followed the instructions in the readme and installed files, renamed directories as instructed. Loaded two mods (SkyUI & a map mod) via NMM and everything works in game. What I'm confused about is why I don't see the two mods in Wrye Bash's mod list. All I see is the skyrim.esp, a patch ESP of some sort and the bashedpatch.

Clearly, NMM has installed the mods in a place that Skyrim can "see" and use, but not Wrye Bash.

I do see the archives in the "/skyrim mods/bash installers" directory.

Any ideas what may be going on? I'll be happy to give more info, just let me know what you need to know. I know very little about modding other than using the mods people much smarter than myself have created!

That's because SkyUI isn't an ESP mod. It's only data files. If you click on the Installers Tab, that's where you manage SkyUI-type mods. However, since it was installed by NMM, Wrye Bash sees the files, but doesn't know where they came from, so cannot manage them. That's what the NMM to Wrye Bash adapter does for you (by following its instructions).
