Now totally burned out

Post » Tue Jun 12, 2012 11:21 pm

I wasn't amazed of Skyrim when it was published. Too much Oblivion with visual changes and different kind of quests, I though. I kept playing still and finally fell in love, but now it feels like theres nothing more to see.

I am currently level 40 after around 150h (I know it's not very much compared to those who have played it 300 hours), I loved Oblivion and Morrowind, but Skyrim feels just not that good. I have played most of the sidequests, all the questlines, I have so good armor and weapons and so much money, that I don't have to loot or raid anything anymore. I have explored all the locations of Skyrim.

The only thing there is still undone: I haven't explored the depths of the Dwarwen Ruins more than I had to in quests. I hate deep, dark places with full of enemies. I don't wanna do that, and I would not enjoy that, so I'll let it be undone.

I have 3 different characters with very different combat-and lifestyles, all my characters are near level 40, and it feels like I have tried everything. So, if looting, exploring, questing, raiding, simply having fun, roleplaying, etc. is done, what does it leave for me to do?

I am on PC and I know there are thousands of cool mods, but they don't interest me. If I try to add stuff to a boring game, it still feels sorta hollow. New quests, cool estate/castle homes or such don't interest me. I am currently playing on a cheat save, using tgm and tdetect and a few god items, and I'm aiming to kill everyone in Skyrim. This is fun, but not for long, I'm afraid.

Does anyone have similar feelings or suggestions how to make the gameplay still interesting? I'll try to take a break, if the exploring would feel awesome again.

Without wanting to sound harsh - why do people make these threads? If the game has run its course for you, great - find another game. Maybe come back later. Maybe don't. The game is a consumer item, after all.

Alternatively, look through the forums for any number of threads that address precisely this problem.

Either way, no need to shout "look at me!" while doing it.

If You liked MW and Oblivion like me then we are on the same boat. After playing roughly 176h hours I realised that it's not as good as the previous ones in terms of exploration and adventure. And this is the funniest thing. You only realise that after You played it ALOT.

bigredpanda, you're right. But when I don't like a TES game, it just sounds... like the end of the world haha.

Dang, guess I just gotta rush into those Nord Ruins and see if there's something worth seeing.

you've encountered the mysterious yet highly cotagious disorder known as 'skyrim apathy'. It is a common disorder, and one that is actually composed of a myriad of lesser afflictions such as quest markers, radiant story, and levelled loot.

Exploration in Skyrim is not the issue, that part of the game is just fine. The reason I got bored with it far quicker than I did with Oblivion, Fallout 3, and New Vegas was simple (Morrowind is another story altogether); Poor writing...even by Bethesda's already low standards as well as shallow quests and companions/followers. You can add all the mods in the world, but you'd still have the bad writing dragging it down, and that's the killer for me.

They do all have more or less unique level design, but apart from that they are pretty much all the same. Bandits in the first part, draugr for the rest of it, a Draugr Murderboss Deathking guarding the boss chest containing a level scaled enchanted item

It's probably because we are in Skyrim. Nords aren't famous for their intelligence now, are they?

Skyrim isn't the problem, it's Bethesda's bad writing skills that are. They desperately need to hire some competent writers for a change.

If you're on PC, the answer is easy: Mods & Creation Kit.

If not, you can always try to roleplay a char, and not powergaming. And if you do both, even better.

I'm at level 35 and I still havent fully explored Skyrim nor did I even start the civil war quest line (I don't even know who to take sides on, hate to see them fight). I'd say that I explored about 60% of the entire landmass.

150 hours is a lot more than you would get out of almost any other game, so if you're burned out, that's fine! Put the game down for a few months or a year or two, then try playing it again when most of the DLC has arrived.

Another suggestion would be to roleplay. Don't neseccarily start any of the faction quests or the main quest, just make a character and play them as if you were them (which means more than just fighting like how they would fight). With mods this could work of you.

I myself found I was started to get burned out, so I slowed down. I didn't play as often, I stopped fast traveling, and I'm still enjoying myself despite the fact that I'm bot doing nearly as much in Skyrim each day compared to when I played it full-on.

Are you sure you have been every where and seen everything? I got more hours pumped into this game then I'd like to share and I'm still finding stuff!! There are quite a few unmarked locations that are easter eggs and have unique items, Nord ruins and Dwemer ruins are pretty fun as well ( falmer infestation aside). Try picking a corner of the map and work your way to the other side in concentric circles, you will be surprise with what you will find. Don't fast travel on your adventures is another good tip, walk/run instead you miss out on a lot of random things by fast traveling and I feel you miss out on at least 50% of the game, I'm on toon number 6 and I'm still enjoying the game, I just try not to follow the same path as my other toon's( I know it's hard to do but it can be done).

I am so far from being burnt out on this game, I started my 5th character last night (RPing a wholly evil Wood Elf) and I don't see myself quitting anytime soon. And, the only mods I use are a map with roads, a naked mod (useless really), and SkyUI.

Of course not, as I said, it just feels like it. I still play it every day (and have gotten back some of the interest ;P), but whenever I run into some new place, it doesn't feel like anything new.

Now I've been slaying mighty Dragon Priests and finding Daedric Artifacts, this is sure fun, at least for now. I also spent 10 hours of finding a perfect-looking armor set and finally found it. I think I can still rip some fun out of this, and then take a break, and then start over again.

I put in around 200 hours when the game first came out and felt a lot like you. I finally quit around Xmas with a few other games out, although I kept Skyrim on the system.

Came back early March and loving it. Now that the CK was released, mods are a lot more robust and I started a new character and have 200 hours invested already and still playing.

I'd say take a break and then come back and see how the game feels after a month or two. It worked for me...

After 200 hours I won't be playing Skyrim anytime soon. It needs to collect dust. Amazingly, I still play Morrowind after 1000+ hours. Makes you wonder.

The same old story.

Apart from cheating etc.

ask yourself this: if you do the same thing every day - like a "work" - probably after a while you become bored to death, even if this would be the best thing in the world.

Some of you perhaps are too demanding, this is a simple videogame after all, when you have no more fun just find something else to do,simple. Or wait for the upcoming Dlcs to enliven the game again if you don't like "Modding".

For those are saying that have played Morrowind or Oblivion most time before:

Skyrim its the same old soup after all; even if modified, the main ingredients remains the same.
So its normally got bored earlier, especially if you've put hundreds/thousands of hours on Morrowind and Oblivion before buying Skyrim.

I think that can happens the same to who has played Skyrim first and then buy those "old" Tes games. apart from personal taste of course.

While that certainly is true, I burned out faster on Skyrim than I did on any previous TES title.

How many hours can you play any game before it gets boring? I'm usually lucky to exceed 30 hours on most games personally.

Take a break, play something else, and come back later.

The consoles have the best chance of burn out because of the lack of mods, but with PC mods the imagination's the limit! That is unless you haven't got any imagination to be inventive & creative and simply want a quick fix.

Funnily enough, Skyrim causes game-addiction and game-burnout symptoms similar to MMO addiction and burnout. Ask any long-term WoW player about how he feels about WoW, and the first word out of his mouth will likely be "bored", but they still can't put the damn thing down.

Skyrim is endless, much like WoW, but things you can do are not endless. It's inevitable.

I probably put 1000 hours into Oblivion and Fallout 3 before it started to wear out, even then I still managed to get a few hundred more hours out of it. Skyrim? I'm a little over 300 hours into it spread over three characters of differing personalities. I've already put the game down once out of boredom, and I'm not sure how long this playthrough will last before I start getting bored again.

There's definitely something amiss with Skyrim, and it sure as hell ain't a lack of imagination on my part. Poor writing... even by Bethesda's already low standards, shallow quest and companions make for a game that doesn't have much staying power. Hopefully FO4 won't suffer from this affliction as well.
