OMGa! Playing without HUD and crosshair!

Post » Fri Jun 08, 2012 11:47 am

For the first time last night, while I was taking screenshots for my mod, I turned off the HUD and the crosshair.

:touched:

That is all.

Wait, I should probably explain this. It plays so much better when you put the game-y elements away!

I need the HUD to know what's going on with my health and magicka points.

Never played with the HUD on, ever.

I`ve playing like this from the start. Much more immersive and adventurous.
Although I have to brighten it up a tiny bit to see my health.

I like it exactly because it makes this muddy. IRL, you're not going to know which blow will kill you, and you're probably too pumped with adrenaline to notice how injured or exhausted you are.

Sure, but it's still a game - if I am to use potions, I need to know when to use them. Waiting until the screen flashes red usually gets me killed.

I'm using the Immersive HUD mod. It can be easily customized - I set Health, Magicka and Stamina bars to show up only when they're being drained; crosshair only when I notch an arrow and compass to be off altogether. I'm going to try playing without crosshair now, but I'm a little afraid how that's going to turn out on my Bosmer archer...

I turned the opacity of the HUD way down. Just so I can see my health. I've also turned off the crosshair. Eventhough my newest character is a two handed warrior that almost never uses his fireball. If you crouch you still get the sneak eye which works as a good aim point when I use ranged attacks.

Irl, you know when you're close to dying, because you can FEEL what is broken in your body. No HUD is like having no pain receptors, it doesn't make it more immersive, it just shuts down some of your senses...

I haven't tried turning off the health, stamina and magicka bars but disabling the compass greatly enhances the exploration side of things IMO.

I find myself paying closer attention to visual cues in the terrain and landmarks. You can often identify dungeons and various structures from a far distance

I agree. That`s why I have to have the Hud on a tiny bit to see my health. I know for a fact that my body will tell me if I am extremely hurt and will give me a good idea if I am close to dying. This in turn will inform me whther I should still fight or run away. ALL our bodies do this in real life, even with the adrenalin.

I`m hoping a Mod will come out soon that will allow me to keep the health on but everything else off.

Hmm, I thought you couldn't just get rid of the compass...

How do you get rid of the compass but keep the crosshair and health/stamina/magicka bars?

I like playing without the crosshair, despite throwing magic at my enemies. I often miss when I want it to be a surprise.

BTW, anyone with a PC and looking for a reduced HUD, go to Skyrim Nexus. There are a couple mods that get rid of the compass but leave the health bars on the screen.

Mods (adjusting the ini file). I don`t think it`s possible on a console.

Yeah, I'm on PC. I've just never heard that you could lose the compass but keep the other stuff.

Is it a pretty obvious toggle in the ini file?

ye ive had compass off, crosshairs off, no stealth eye and opacity to almost zero since the start
u have the opacity on just a little so u can just see your bars without itbeing too obvious

its the only way to play in my opinion

I adjusted my .ini file to disable compass.
It's fun indeed, but takes time to get used to.

I need the HUD to know what's going on with my health and magicka points.

I've found playing a mage with no HUD makes it upwards of a million times more tactical.

I don't know if my health is 25% or 75%.
- Better toss up some quick healing for good measure!

Same goes with the magicka.
- I conjuered up a Flame Atronauch, a lightning rune, and I've been healing up for 3 seconds and steadfast warding for 2. Do I have enough magicka to lightning-bolt this Necromage?

There`s a little adjusting.
It`s not hard, it`s pretty straight foward, you just follow the instructions carefully, making sure you make a backup copy first.

There might be other mods that take the editing work out of it for you, you`ll have to have a look, but I liked the one I got because I was able to remove other things too.

That's what the decals, blurriness and red-screening is for. To each his own, I guess.

Find it a lot more interesting the way I play it, but that's me.

This may sound like a noob question but how did you turn off the crosshair and health stats for screencaps? Seriously all of my screencaps have that annoying crosshair in the middle.

Open your SkyrimPrefs.ini (should be in the same folder your saves are). In [Interface] find the line bShowCompass=1. Change 1 to 0. Voila
