Option to turn off the protagonists voice

Post » Wed Dec 02, 2015 5:59 pm

Pretty much this.

A voiced protagonist is a wonderful step forward in my opinion.

I have no issue with anyone tinkering with that to make the game more 'old school',

but it is no more an obligation on Bethesda to do it as it would be for them to build an isometric option.

I actually think his voice is very fitting - for the 1950s fallout vibe.

I don't think his voice sounds that generic or mediocre either, as I don't find very many men with a voice like that in todays age.

People on here are sounding a bit picky. Between graphics, dialogue format and now voice actors, I think they need to fast from video games for awhile to come down to reason: not every game is the same - and that's ok unless/until it's objectively a bad thing. Play a game for what it is rather than what it compares to.

Seriously, think of handing this game to a kid in Africa (if they had a system lol) and I imagine they would think it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Yes I did go there but to demonstrate something - what an over indulgence/obsession does to novel things.

I really like the voice acting so far. But then again i haven't been watching hours of leaked footage, just seen a few little bits, and what i've seen and heard i quite liked.

Having a seperate volume slider for the player character, letting players mute them if they so prefer, does seem like a pretty basic option that should be included. PC games have been getting lax over the past couple of years when it comes to good option menu's that it's almost praise worthy when one does it right.

Actually it may not. We've always had a voiced protagonist.. breathing, grunting, pain sounds.. they've been in every game. If those sounds are mixed in with the voiced files and not separate sound effects, then someone will have to comb through every single file to find the right ones and maybe even have to edit the volume of each sound file individually. One thing is for sure.. While most people might not think they like a fully voiced protagonist, they'd probably notice the silence of absolutely no sound files attached to their character.

I was super excited when voice acting was first announced. Great, I thought, no more poor Skyrim dialogue and animation. Yipee! Surely they would build the new system from the ground up, wouldn't they?

Then I saw the leaked footage and the bubble burst. Fallout still had the same mouth animation and wooden acting. Only this time it was delivered with flat emotion from the male voice actor. I was in shock. The scene I saw was a high energy scene, yet it was still delivered with a monotone voice.

Man I hope things get better on Tuesday. Or this could be a disaster.

I hope and pray this doesn't happen.

But yes, it looks like we will need a mod.

Those vocalization sounds would not be mixed in with voiced dialog. Bethesda has always separated voiced dialog from breathing / vocalization sounds.

Because of that, you wouldn't need to manually edit any sound files. All you would need is the proper BSA file structure and place in some empty sound files with the same name as the player's voiced dialog files. It could easily be done even before the new GECK is released.

But surely you would then get to watch the mouth moving / talking, with no speech / sound coming out? If so, that doesn't seem to be a great improvement on the situation to me.

It is essential for me that there become a way via mods at least to turn off the PC voice. Quest mods and any mods that add dialogue interactions will be jarring. I wish there were a way to do this on day 1, but alas I doubt it.

I think it's a sign of age that I don't care at all about voiced dialogue, even from NPC's. For me it's just an unnecessary production value. My favorite RPG of all time is Ultima 6. No voiced dialogue but a world whose interactivity is still impressive to this day. Ultima 7 has even more in-depth world interaction and the only voiced dialogue is from the Earth Serpent and the Guardian. If you know what I'm talking about then you probably got your drivers license when Bush Sr. or Clinton was in office.

It may sound dumb, but a simple sort by file size would reduce the workload by a lot. All those breathing, grunting, etc sounds should be much smaller, at least it is like that in Skyrim. Then it would be a matter of just checking small files, to know which ones have very short dialogue (yes, no, etc) and which one have those sounds.

I'm waiting for the voice mods.

I want my character to have the voice of a Nord who sounds like he's had one too many sweetrolls stolen from him.

It will come eventually. Just look at Interesting NPC's for Skyrim. Granted this is specific texts but never doubt the patience of modders.

I would hazard a guess that within 6 months there'll be multiple voices available.

I find having voiced main character means I end up playing female characters, which I guess is fine.

The problem is that playing a male character, voice acting make it clear he is someone else, who is obviously better at everything than me, and I get to hate the guy! Playing a woman this does not seem to be an issue for some reason.

By the way, does anyone know if it will still be possible to adjust the light level?

Can't you do all the dialogue in first person anyway?

I don't know what's low quality about it, but nothing would make the game more intolerable than voice acting that depicted the male protagonist as some sort of emo glee club reject drama queen.

Still, I'm concerned that the voiced protagonist will undermine the replay value of the game, as drastically different characters persist in sounding exactly the same time after time.

How is it lazy? not every gamer likes to imagine voices or pretend to be their character. A lot of people do like a voiced PC, Mass Effect is a good example, a lot of the voice acting was bad at times, but people made a stronger connection to the characters and the universe than they have ever with any TES or Fallout game. Having a voice doesn't make it any less your character, You still play it your way the voice gives the characters more life and emotion. I don't mind either way voiced or unvoiced, but I know Commander Shepard and his/her crew will remembered a lot longer than the life less dragonborn and the mute lone wanderer.

This is how I feel. The voiced protagonist was just...so flat.

If you're going to make Fallout a more narrative, character-focused experience with a dialogue system akin to a Bioware of Witcher game and a main character whose personality we're not entirely in control over, at least do it right.

I was blown away by how poorly this was done in the game, especially after how excited they seemed about it.

See, this is my fear.

Yeah... let's go back to games only with text and without graphics. The good old times... were you have to imagine everything. Today we are just lazy.

I honestly don't mind the protagonist. Maybe it'll be awesome. Then again adding that option to turn off the voice could be nice because everyone would be happier than they are now.

Help me out here. Are you all referring to clicking on the text response you want and then having the character voice the text back? And if so, assume the OP is requesting the option to have the voice turned off, right?

This won't ruin the game for me but I really hope there is an option to turn it off.

What svcks about having to add a mod to silence the voice is the animation. Won't we still see the protagonist talking, just muted? I don't know how the modding works exactly and if removing the talking animation is possible.

Edit: Nevermind. Question already asked and answered

I'm an old school Fallout fan and was looking forward to the voiced protagonist of FO4. But now that I see comments on how flat and wooden the male actor sounds, I would like a mod to silence him since I only play as males.
