PCGamer Dawnguard review score: 59

Post » Sun Nov 18, 2012 10:15 am

What happens if you don't complete it? The vampire attacks are simply overwhelming?

For some it is, and some towns are harder to protect than others. Large towns that are like mazes you may never realize are under attack, some people seem to have very frequent attacks some not at all, some seem to have a spawning bug where a bunch spawn at once, if you don't complete MQ then the attacks don't stop.

However I complete main quest and they still happen, another bug.

I can agree that the DLC handling isn't very good. I'm trying to do the MQ/bits of civil war but I have to put that on hold and deal with the vampire menace. Apparantly vampires are a larger threat. I was never "forced" to do any DLC in F3/NV.

I recently started a new character, and as soon as he got to Riverwood the first thing a guard said to him was "This vampire menace is getting out of hand". My character is now at level 24, has fought 3 dragons, two of which were scripted, seen one other that didn't want to play, and has not seen one (1) vampire. Granted, I didn't go to Fort Dawnguard, but I haven't had one vamp raid, no random encounters, no nothing to do with vamps. Granted, I don't fast travel to places, and if I do I go to the stables, not the gate, but the point remains that in 24 levels I haven't seen hide nor hair of the vampire menace.

More like Repetitive in the worst way possible. You'll basically have to baby sit NPC's if you don't want them killed. It's even worse when those same NPC's are shopkeepers that are getting killed due to terrible AI and weak equipment.

Honestly, "59" might be a shocker to most people, but it shouldn't be. Dawnguard doesn't pertain to the main-quest nor does it change the course of the game, thus even if it was perfect, it wouldn't be a high score just for that reason.

I really enjoyed the Forgotten Vale, Volkihar, Fort Dawnguard, and the quest-line (as well as the rewards such as the Vampire Lord), but if Dawnguard were to have never existed, the game wouldn't be lacking all that much.

That sound quite unusual...
They happen regardless of going to the fort. I remember on my way to the fort getting attacked like 3 times.

That's not really my problem. They should've dedicated more people on making them, like they did in SKyrim.

In SI's example, they have even less excuses, as Oblivion already had a huge success by the time, and they had both the money and the fan responsiveness guaranteed.

True. Skyrim is much better in this aspect. Granted, Bethesda seems to be getting worse in the writing department IMO.

Yes they are. The endings are so, unsatisfying...

"Hey guys, I got an idea. What if we let the player meet Ysgramor, King Olav, Ysmir and every other famous Nordic character of history....

Then we don't let the player talk to them AT ALL? Instead they're told to go scream "BA-CAWK!!" at a cloud for 3 minutes and fight another dragon.
People are gonna love it."

Vampire Lord form, while fun, isn't worth using if you're playing a high level character - it just doesn't cut it when you can suit up in dragonbone armor and smash everything with a daedric warhammer. And it's forced third person...
Writing is fine, but the beginning is very sloppy (take a dangerous vampire home? come on...)

What I like: new perk trees, Forgotten Vale (all of it. I like icy landscapes ), flaming pony, that one guy we meet in Soul Cairn (no spoilers), dragonbone weapons, crossbows. Mostly items and skills, definitely not the story.
I agree completely. Dawnguard adds some additional and fun stuff, but the story kinda svcks and there are no real choices. It's basically more of the same of Skyrim.

Add the price to the score and I would probably give it 40%.

I had the one attack when I stepped out of the tavern at Ivarstead after seeing the greybeards, but the game crashed...haven't seen a vamp since, and I've been riding the roads at night looking for them. Level 27 now and still no vamps.

haha lucky you.

I have a bug where after completing the story my attacks continue anyways.

Its a no brainer that these attacks are bugged and yet you have people saying otherwise. Although the attacks aren't bugged for me I do believe they are bugged for a lot of people. Otherwise we wouldn't have a lot of threads about it.

I have the same thinking when it comes to the overwhelming vampires which to me I think are a combination of bugs and poor thought.

Bugs, too frequent or too many vampires (like the random spawning monster bugs that spawns like 20 NPC's randomly all together)

Poor thinking as in, vampries scale to your level but do not attack you first. Rather they attack civilians. Which are 1 hit killed at high levels because they don't scale in level with you too.

I don't have the large number bug, but seeing how I've hit a good amount of bugs that others haven't, how some have had perfect games and others haven't, I find it perfectly reasonable to believe that there are overwhelming bugs dealing with vampires that I just have been lucky enough to miss.

Poor thinking as in towns are not too sparsely populated enough. What can we do about this? Nuke? No we did that in FO3.. I know, Vampires! And be damned the people who actually like having NPC's around towns!

Also the score was very generous.

Well, my current character is now level 30, and toddling off to the dawnguard to see if that brings out the vamps, lol. Still haven't seen one, although I was attacked by someone invisible which ended up with Lydia and me doing more damage to each other with wild swings of the swords than anything else...I'm assuming that incident was either a glitch (and to be honest, a very entertaining and 'increasing the difficulty' one at that) or some effect from one of the drug mods I'm running (it makes fighting the random thugs and dealers pretty interesting when they crank themselves up with woopee dust).

And no further dragons either...and only one sighting of Thalmor outside of their embassy, and no random battles between legion and stormcloaks...like I said earlier, this current run through is the most sedate game I've played :)

Dragons seem to be reduced by dawnguard, and typically the vampires start off invisible before attacking, then when get low on health run away invisible. Which part of the [censored] machanics, they're easy to see sometimes because you can see the glowing orb in their hand from the spell.

I'm certain that one was a glitch Xharon...never became visible at all, and not even a shimmery outline that invisible things get...it just 'wasn't there'...

I've now visited the Fort DG, so hopefully I might see some bloodsvckers soon...the way this game is going I'm going to max my levels and not finish any major questline, lol.

Oh, bears and spiders, especially spiders, seem to be the commonest nasties now. As soon as I head into a forest there's spiders everywhere, more than I've seen in any other runthrough.

I would rather have a accurate (not pumped up sales push) semi-detailed description of game-play and plot than a number. The number is someone else's opinion and that (unless I know the person) doesn't help me much.

You randomly reminded me, theres a mod for people scared of spiders!

It turns all spiders.... INTO BEARS!!!

So when you see spiders coming down from the ceiling, it's bears floating down from the ceiling!!! xD

I'd still like a mod that turns bears into spiders :teehee:

Though after starting using the Skyrim Monster Mod they usually have been eaten by something more imaginative by the time i get there. Serves them right for being loud and everywhere

Well, my character is now off on the DG questlines, and still no vampires, lol. He's about to go into the first of the quest sites, so I have to run into some.

59 out of 100... That's how many Ps3 players still respect Bethesda. Ironic, was it worth it?

No they look like circus bears or something that are very stiff with no movement, inching from the ceiling and inching towards you.
