People keep complaining about combat

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 9:34 am

People will always complain about something, no matter what u do or have made. those who complain about this is probably 67% mmo first person shooter or hack n slash fans..
well, i actually like what ive seen so far, and have nothing bad to say about skyrim so far.. there will be mods for everything u could ever inmagine, so im not worried at all.

This is completely biased. Although I play every type of game occasionally, I'm mostly a RPer and long time TES fan.

The thing is that games, including RPGs, evolve constantly. When comparing Skyrim to another game, I won't compare it to Oblivion alone, but to all other (far more recent) RPGs released since then.

Skyrim's melee combat is alright, but it's a little outdated already. Especially if you consider Dark Messiah did all this weighted attacks with finishers, decapitation, and dual wielding years ago. And did it better, in my humble opinion.

I think it is reasonable for people to be concerned about combat. After all, much of our time in Skyrim will be spent in combat.

However, I don't think combat is the main focus of Skyrim, although it could be one of the bigger aspects of the game. Skyrim isn't as much about combat as Dark Souls. I don't think Bethesda wanted to focus on combat on Skyrim as their main priority; IMO the main priority of any TES game is the exploration and immersion in the world.

Better comparison would be Dark Messiah of Might and Magic because its 1st person like Skyrim and it has awesome melee combat too.
Skyrim is both first person and third person and the brst combat system for mele is the Dark/Demon Souls games.

They should leave it as it is. soo many newcomers with all the new action games out, wanting tes to be like that would totally ruin it all. just like DA2 did.. for god sake, let tes do its own thing.

Skyrim is mostly 1st person game where you can also play in 3rd person. But have you played Dark Messiah? Its very old and linear game and all but its combat is still one of the best, better than demon/darksouls at least.

I think Oblivion wasn't so bad. Anyway as long as it has nothing common with Morrowinds annoying combat-system I won't complain.

Yep, and it inspired popular Oblivion mods, which in turn inspired Skyrim's designers. Even the new spell system borrows heavily from DM, all the way to spell traps and the whole set on fire, freeze and shock criticals.

Watched plenty of leaked footage and it look's fine.

Think I would cry if it ever became anything like Dark Souls combat ---> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0mWUJXtqb8

I guess I should play it before I bash it (like half the people on these boards with Skyrim O.o) but it just looks horrible <_>

I'm more amazed by people determined to mod massive changes into the game before they even want to try it for the first time. Reminds me of people who put salt and pepper or some other seasoning on their food before they even try it.
I dont think you get the point, its not what it looks like its how it feels, and there talking about realism and gameplay. When you hiy someone with a sword what hapens? does the enemy not spring back, does it just do the same animations as when you hit it with a mace?, thats what people are talking about. Remember it has been 5 years and that was a big complaint in the last game. Everything else is realistic why not the mele combat?

Not a newcomer, just acknowledging that Dark Souls did it better. It's only my opinion of course, but I much more prefer realistic combat. And I think it would fit well in TES, considering they're obviously trying hard to make it immersive and as realistic as they can.

What is it about the current system that you prefer over that? Just wondering.

Sorry i never played Dark Messiah so i cant coment on that but everyone is talking Dark Souls combat, I just played Dark Souls and the combat is fun on it but i will take Skyrim anyday over Dark Souls. Well until they can fix the online part in Dark Souls.

Did you mean you will take Skyrims combat anyday over Dark Souls?

Because saying you'll take skyrim over dark souls doesn't mean much. It's like saying you'd take Mario Cart over Grand Turismo. They're different games. All I want is Dark Souls combat in Skyrim not the overall game.

No i meant if i had too choose one game i would pick Skyrim, Dark souls mele combat is better not the magic combat, people tend too forget how bad there magic combat is.

I think most people here will agree Skyrim will probably exceed Dark Souls in almost every aspect. And the combat in Skyrim is not bad, we're all just debating how it could be better based on other recent and not so recent games.

You can watch Dark Messiah gameplay videos on youtube, btw, and see for yourself what we mean.

Guess I wouldn't know about its magic system because I went full melee lol.

Anyways no game mechanic is ever perfect, but I do think TES should look into something a bit more challenging than just hitting the mob and not caring where it lands. It's based 100% on how strong your stats are.. I don't think that kind of system has any place anymore in this kind of RPG. In Final Fantasy sure, but not one like Skyrim where they're main focus seems to be realism.

All they need to do is spend less time on crappy cinematics like finisher moves, and more time on getting the regular melee right.

If a small indie developer like TaleWorlds can do melee combat well in an RPG, so can Bethesda.

First off im not a new comer, i have had every system since pong, and if you played all these games that are out there you can see the mele combat not the magic, but mele combat is outdated and hasnt came along with the rest of the game.

i didnt mean to insult anyone, probably wrote too quick before giving it any thoughts. i havend played dark souls so i actually don't know how the combat feels. from what ive seen it looks like an hack n slash game and i might be mistaken. im not saying tes is perfect at all. and yes i agree with the realistic combat would be great and probably more enjoyable for tes. i just like the wipe tes has and the fact that its doing its own thing, skyrim that is..

Bethesda has tons to worry about in Skyrim though. Everything they decide to dedicate their time to, means more of their resources used. It's the reason they decided not to have any kind of multiplayer in the game, according to Todd in the new interview. They don't have infinite manpower, it's as simple as that.

Nobody is complaining, its called wishing for a better mele combat system, theres nothing wrong with that after all we who buy the game are making them millionaires so i think we have a right to voice our opinions.
