Playstation Orbis PS4

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 1:43 pm

Yeah, I've got one of the 60 GB's (it used to be 60, anyway. Swapped out the hard drive a year ago) as well, and they had PS2 CPUs installed on their motherboards. Those quickly got pulled in favor of software emulation, (models CECHCxx to CECHExx) and then backwards compatibility was pulled all together with the CECHGxx ones and all others made after.
I've been thinking about replacing my PS3's HDD with a larger one, but so far I've had no reason to do so. Mostly because I can't even seem to create a PSN account no matter what name I pick. Even random letter and number strings are "already taken".

I just now realized that this thread has had little to do with the actual OP in some time, instead now about PS2s and backwards compatibility. But then there really wasn't much to talk about.

If you do decide to switch it out, be careful when you do it. It is really easy to strip the screws on the hard drive's cage.

Isn't there a possibility the PS4 will simply not use any retail discs?

Cutting out the optical drive and limiting games to digital download only would be a very interesting move IMO. hideous.

I just don't believe we have the broadband network necessary to just write off physical media once and for all. Yet. Especially with games being 10-20+ GB.
I also can't see them just throwing out all the customers who couldn't/wouldn't do such large-scale downloads.

(Personally, I'd hate it. It would be a reason to give up on the Playstation if they did that.)

So do conspiracy theories and alien visitations, doesn't mean you should pay attention to them.

Not interested... Congratulations you can make a game with tremendous graphics, but how long or how well will the games actually play?

I don't understand why people are throwing a fit about lack of backwards compatibility. I understand not liking the other aspects, but backwards compatibility has never been big on consoles. The PS2, gameboys, dses, Wii (but not the latest wii model), PS3 (hw with psx, some old models with hw for ps2, some old models with software for PS2, most with no ps2 compatibility), and the 360 (partial, mostly crappy software compatibility).

It doesn't seem to be a common feature at all. Only two home connotes have full backwards compatibility, another with compatibility for two Gens ago (with select models having some level compatibility for ps2), crappy partial compatibility for another, and the others are handhelds

Same way they do it with Steam.

http://games.yahoo.com/blogs/plugged-in/rumor-next-playstation-coming-2013-200015017.html

i found this artical on yahoo! and I also found this little jem .
"If you then decide to trade that disc in, the pre-owned customer picking it up will be limited in what they can do," the site said. "While our sources were unclear on how exactly the pre-owned customer side of things would work, it's believed used games will be limited to a trial mode or some other form of content restriction, with consumers having to pay a fee to unlock/register the full game."

So any pre-owned games would have to be unlocked in order to play it. Oh and you have to pay to unlock it....IF THIS IS WHAT THE PS4 IS GOING TO BE I SAY {BLEEP} IT. I don't care what next gen graphics will look like, I WILL NOT WASTE MONEY ON SOMETHING LIKE THIS---THIS IS BS :verymad: !!!

May just be rumors, but whatever the case is, I'll be glad when I become a complete PC gamer again and do not have to worry about MS and Sony's bull.

http://www.vg247.com/2012/03/09/rumour-next-xbox-wont-include-disc-drive/ that the Xbox720 will not contain any optical disc drive. Perhaps the "Ponystation Orbis" will have a similar setup.

I'm calling big BS on that. Replacing optical media with solid-state technology is incredibly cost-prohibitive. It's the reason optical media is still in the game (pun not intended). When you can stamp out discs for mere pennies, it's many orders of magnitude cheaper than a 50 GB SD card would be.

I also doubt any source that's breaking “the strictest NDA” they've ever signed. It's why I don't like rumors, they're often so far-fetched and usually very little of them come true.

Call me old-fashioned, but I much prefer a physical disc to digital downloads. I still buy CDs, not MP3s, and I still will even if iTunes and the like start to offer lossless. If I buy a game on release I buy it on disc. I buy older games on Steam just because it's so much cheaper during sales.

The key thing is choice. You know if all they offer is digital downloads, the games will still be just as expensive. There's little incentive for me there. Cheap downloads or expensive physical copies, don't force me to buy what's the worst of both. If it's true I won't be buying a new console. Not like I would have anyway

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2012/04/02/codename-orbis-sony-playstation-4-gets-working-title-and-other-rumors/ is now reporting that the PS4 will have 4k resolution.

Is that even within the realm of possibility?

Is this another rumor?

I hope so because Oribis is a seriously lame name.

First: obligatory "lol, faux 'news'"

Second: Yes. 4k displays exist, but are incredibly expensive. The main REAL benefit for having the capability of 4k display is it means you can do HD 3D video as well (given an HD 3D display).

Though 4k does appeal to me, I'm significantly less excited about 3D :yuck:

Same here the more and more I keep hearing about the PS4---the less and less I'm starting to like it.
