Playstation Orbis PS4

Second: Yes. 4k displays exist, but are incredibly expensive. The main REAL benefit for having the capability of 4k display is it means you can do HD 3D video as well (given an HD 3D display).

Yes, I don't doubt that they exist ;-) (planning to upgrade my projector to 4k in the next few months).

My question was is it within the realm of possibility that the hardware in the PS4 would be able to deliver 30-60fps for demanding games at 4k resolution? A desktop GPU that can run games at that resolution is rather expensive.

It seems the Orbis will use the AMD 7670 desktop graphics card and the AMD A8-3850 CPU, which contains a second, integrated 6550D graphics chip that would be used in a Crossfire configuration with the 7670.

That doesn't make any sense. It's really stupid to use a CISC architecture in a specialized device, not to mention it's a very radical change from a vector processing unit like that in the PS3. Also why go with a chip that has a discrete GPU when you're putting in a full GPU?

So I'm calling BS again

Well, it could make sense if the integrated GPU was being used for something else...like video decoding or frame buffer pipe-lining to achieve better vertical sync with displays. In crossfire with a discrete GPU, though, nope. That wouldn't make any sense. Crossfire and SLI require some degree of symmetry to be effective, and dollars-to-donuts that integrated GPU isn't going to be able to keep up with the 7670.

I'm only interested insofar as development being less restrained, which is a good thing. Can't help but think motion controls and all the "next gen" stuff is [censored] though.

I suppose it depends on projections for what the broadband penetration will look like around Q4 2013.

Not high enough. That's only a year & 1/2 from now. I'm sorry, but I'm only 2 hours away from Baltimore, which is a major metropolitan area, and there still isn't high-speed internet around here. MyFi, and that's about it, and it's got a 5GB cap. I don't foresee that changing in the next year. Maybe in the next five, but not in just one.

Or be like me, stick with the PS2/PS1/N64/GBA/PSP/PC.

Greatest generation of video games anyways. Well, you need to go back one more to include the SNES, but that's ok, I forgive you for forgetting to put that up there, I know it was just a small brain fart.
