A poll about nostalgia: is the first TES you played your fav

Post » Sat Dec 10, 2011 9:49 pm

I think the results of this poll will probably tell us that our preferred TES is the one we played first.

But I can't tell for sure.

Let's see how the poll goes as it grows in the number of sincere answers.

If the result of the poll indicates that a vast majority prefer the first TES they played, how big do you think nostalgia plays its role?

For one, my first TES was Morrowind and it's my favourite, but especially because it's so complete with the great mods done for it. Let's think of ten: LGNPC, Great House Dagoth, Antares' big mod, BTB Game improvements, Vurt's trees/grass, MGE XE/MCP, Julan, Animated Morrowind 1 expanded + 2, Rise of House Telvanni, Blocking Reflex (a mod similar to Deadly Reflex's Timed Blocks, that takes into account both player reflexes and player character stats).
Even Oblivion has had quite a few incredible mods that gave a lot of flavour to it - let's think of ten: FCOM, Deadly Reflex, Unique Landscapes/Better Cities, Kragenir's Death Quest, Darn UI, Integration, Qarl Pack 3, OBGE, Oblivion XP, Nehrim.

But Skyrim, unmodded, is (with all things considered) quite up there with those modded beasts.

My choice for Morrowind lies not only in mods contribution for it, of course, but also for the constant feeling I had it was only me I had to figure out what I wanted to do, in a culturally/politically vibrant world full of guilds and lore interwined with the main quests. And also for nostalgia. But how much for nostalgia? That's a question I probably will never be able to answer.

Let's hear your take on this interesting subject!!!

I can't vote. My first TES was Daggerfall, but my favorite is Morrowind.

Edit:
Skyrim isn't as good as Morrowind yet, but with mods it may become.

You have to place a vote in each question or it won't count. I started with MW, played OB, and Skyrim is still my favorite.

Voting is kind of awkward since you must vote in both polls. I started on Morrowind, but it didn't really interest me too much at the time, and I didn't play too much of it. Oblivion svcked me in and held me for years, however. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if I can say Skyrim will do the same though.

Yeah, getting an error when voting. Arena was my first, but I never got into it, never got around to playing Daggerfall. Played Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim. I think Skyrim is my favorite, though there are a few things I liked in both Morrowind and Oblivion.

This poll is so wrong. You should just delete it and ask: Which TES is your favourite. And ask.

My first was Oblivion. I was too young to have an interest in Morrowind so consider yourselves lucky you guys who got to experience it when it first came out. Skyrim is a great game but the nostalgia of Oblivion was amazing. I was a Halo kid when Morrowind had first come out. Don't hate. Alot of us liked Halo at some point in time. :P

My first was daggerfall. Awesome game, but wow were the controls complicated beyond reason.

Skyrim looks like it may be favourite but not yet decided.

If it fails then Morrowind, since at the time it was such a huge leap forward from daggerfall and other rpgs.

Started with Morrowind, played Oblivion. Skyrim is my favourite currently.

That being said I do think Skyrim could inherit quite a few features from both the previous games that would make it significantly better.

played oblivion; loved it. played morrowind, and loved that i didnt have to install 20 mods just to make it playable. despite putting more hours into OB, my fav is still morrowind because that game was a blast without mods while oblivion required 100 of them before i could really get into it.

Started with Arena. Favorite is... either Morrowind or Skyrim. Still a bit too early to say, but I've been having a great time with Skyrim so far.

Out of the all-encompassing options (save for Arena and Daggerfall - sorry for that, but I wanted not to go overboard with the options).... for now "FIRST TES = Morrowind AND FAVOURITE TES = Morrowind" is in the lead!!!!

Roll on!

Well, I was introduced to TES watching my brother play Morrowind, but started on Oblivion myself and went back to Morrowind. I love the culture, wonder and political mystique behind Morrowind, but its combat system left me uninspired.

Oblivion however; I've spent much of my life wandering the rugged Colovian highlands, the warm Gold Coast, the banks of the lush Niben, the depths of the Great Forest, the peaks of the Jeralls, the mists of Blackwood, the throngs in the cities, the nightmares in Daedric realms. For all its flaws, Oblivion occupies a warm part of my heart, and when I'm done with Skyrim I'll go back to it. I adore it.

Skyrim's world is also breathtaking, and you may have noticed the world was most of what I lovingly recalled from Oblivion. That doesn't mean Skyrim's my favourite of course; I still have hundreds of hours left to play before I can form a mature opinion. It really is beautiful, though I have yet to explore the frozen east. I also quite enjoy the political backdrop of the Civil War, since the politics of TES are enrapturing. However, some flaws have proven glaring, such as the gimping of magic, the underwhelming perk system and the lack of interesting, original non-combat quests. (Other superficial problems, such as the UI, I leave unmentioned since they can easily be fixed via mods.)

In summary, Oblivion's my favourite. Still too soon to tell for Skyrim; the game is amazing, but it does have its noticeable problems, and as the Elder Scrolls' devoted fanbase that we are, we should take notice and press Bethesda to improve for their expansions and ultimately their next iteration.

I've quit skyrim for now and gone back to Morrowind. I love Skyrim to death, got over 100 hours on it, but after the new game enthusiasm wore off all it did was make me want to play Morrowind again.

My first game of the Elder Scrolls series is Skyrim! It's interesting to hear, though, from a friend who has played since Morrowind his gripes from each game and the changes implemented in this one. His gripes about Oblivion's level scaling and his story about this wacky quest from one of the two games which he hoped would have a similar one in this game.

This is the quest he was talking about.

My first TES was Daggerfall and although I loved it it was not my favorite. I'd say Oblivion is my current favorite, but once I've played Skyrim a few hundred hours I'll be able to make a more educated ranking.

So far:

two evaluations:

1) many started with Morrowind, and they either prefer Morrowind (their first TES) or Skyrim (no Oblivion); the former is more frequent than the latter;

2) the ones who started with Oblivion and preferring Skyrim are more than the ones preferring their first TES game (that is, Oblivion).

So far the conclusion is: Oblivion, out of the three, seems the one lacking love. :)
