Pony-mindedness

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 10:03 pm

I'm not saying that all American's are close-minded. I'm American myself. I said that because in America, where I live, I see it all the time. I can't say the same for other countries because I've never lived there and seen it with my own eyes.

Don't worry, it happens here in Canada (aka "Greater America") all the time.

To be fair it was a post likely made in irony, from what I can tell.

Let's just hope it was purely satirical and they'll edit a :P or something into the post.

I agree with you, people don't seem to want to take as many risks in recent times and step out of their comfort zone even for a simple conversation. Every so often you can find one or two people willing to push boundaries but for the most part people won't. Not sure why, but I wish more people were open minded.

That is precisely why I found myself in the position of flaunting my opinions so often. I cannot stand being wrong because I tend to think of myself as a rather ignorant and stupid person, so I'll sometimes find myself so desperate to prove to others (but most importantly myself) that I'm not, even if all it does is show everyone that I, in fact, am.
creds to you for admitting it then  and don't worry, at least you have the odds with you for figuring it out since you are aware of it.

I agree. People would rather argue over how to do something and not get anything at all accomplished, out of spite of the other's beliefs and being scared to do something other than what they're used to, than actually managing to accomplish what needs to be done.

If two people want the same thing then why is it so hard to make it happen?

Well why don't you just do it the other persons way then?

Because, in the specific situation that sparked me to create this topic, the other person's way would not have achieved the outcome they claimed it would and instead they chose to argue a pointless argument because they didn't want to admit to being wrong. Would her way have actually worked and achieved the outcome both of us wanted then I would have gladly accepted it. However she was trying to fit a square peg in a round hole and refused to see that what she was saying made no sense. She's my best friend and I love her to death but she's not the sharpest tool in the shed. She's the kind of person that has an extreme tendency to have "Ohhhhhhhhh" moments.

So you, according to you were correct and she was wrong in your eyes. I wonder who else thought that in that particular conversation...

I didn't see her ideas as entirely wrong. She made some good points, just in the wrong way. She failed to see the "big picture" and connect all the dots. Her ideas were flawed, not entirely wrong. I attempted to compromise with her multiple times, but she persisted with her argument and refused to even listen to what I was saying.

I believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion on right and wrong. However when someone refuses to listen to what someone else has to say about a topic and instead tries to force their ideas on them without compromise, then that is when I believe they become close-minded.

I believe the exact opposite, Americans are too open minded. You let things to divide you where others would not even let being discussed due to the stupidity of such topics. In our close mindedness, we deal with less [censored] but that also kills creativity. False-positives.

Don't ever change.

I'm the counter argument for this. Before I get into any argument I put myself into the other persons shoes to try and understand why they believe what they do. The only problem is I tend to make people think about their positions and they lash out and get pissed.

I can't judge this unless I know what the debate was about and how it played out. Maybe she was right, and was also right in standing up for her beliefs, then again, maybe she wasn't.

That's not really what this seems to be about. It's not about being right or wrong, it's how you defend your position and or state your argument. There are "close-minded" people who will do nothing but scream out that they are right and you need to Please continue, my good sir., and there are those that will calmly ask you to explain why you believe than and try to pick it apart or follow by then calmly explaining their views. It's not at all about who is right or who isn't because in most cases there is no specific answer.

EDIT: Just wanted to say that I love this forums censor. I have never used the abbreviation s t f u here except to state that point...I just about destroyed my keyboard with beer. :D

This needs to be circulated around the CD more, and taken to heart.

But @ OP, I agree with vtastek, that Americans tend to be too open minded.

Relativism, in all matters, is the enemy.

Knowing neither I can say she was wrong in standing up for her beliefs, at least in that she failed to explain why she believed what she believed.

People who go "shut up, you're wrong" without explaining why that's so rank somewhere between someone in a coma and a toddler as to the validity of their positions.

I think in general, the more time passes, the more people will generally be more open-minded. People change, however, and some people wish to remain willfully ignorant of facts, so it is not universally true. It's also possible that you have been spending too much time around advlts, who tend to be more firm in their beliefs whether it's from a place of wisdom or ignorance. I'd say just don't let idiots get you down, and if they are friends who refuse to have a friendly debate, they really aren't worth your time. Let them get back to listening to Nickelback and anticipating Michael Bay's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I completely agree with you. Compared to let's say 100 years ago? We are miles and miles above where we were then as a society in terms of "open-mindedness", but we still aren't where we need to be yet.
