Pony-mindedness

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 12:08 am

Has anyone else noticed that a lot of people are extremely close-minded? I was just in a debate with a friend about the economy and she pretty much stuck to "I'm wrong your right, and you're an idiot for believing in what you do."

I see it everywhere. People would rather argue about how to solve a problem than shut up and work together to actually solve it. It's extremely counter-productive in almost every situation I can think of, and I think that it causes a lot of the problems we have today.

Now I do not want to turn this into a political or religious discussion, so lets not talk about topics involving such things. However I would like to hear what you guys have to say about the topic of close-mindedness in general. Has anyone else noticed that the majority of people would rather argue their point to the death instead of trying to compromise?

I disagree, and if I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

It's inevitable.

An individual of certain values and opinions will always be more susceptible to concepts akin to the concepts this individual holds, and rather shut other ideas out. It's probably because the ego doesn't want to be butthurt, realizing that it was wrong.

Some people just have an innate need to create "us against them" scenarios and are much more interested in fueling those situations rather than actually solving problems.

I think it's more a fear of admitting when one's wrong. I've seen cases where people are proven wrong, but continue bringing up excuses on why they must be right.

That's what happens when politics becomes a religion rather than a science. Oh, snap, did I just break a forum rule or not? I'm honestly not sure.

Meh, talking about religion and politics is fine, but it leads to people [censored]ing over stupid topics and beliefs. Best not start them up.

Yes. Let us single out Americans as stupid and closed minded. More so then anyone else.

you act as if this is a new thing....

And for the record, stereotyping Americans as stupid is very close minded.

I think one's mind needs to be receptive to new ideas, but at the same time, duly critical and skeptic.

I'm so open minded my brain fell out.

Sorry for the cliche, but this thread is going nowhere fast.

 Well played. As for me, I often find myself in heated debates that inevitably lead to nowhere but personal attacks, and sometimes I am the one to blame for their progression into that state, but I've been trying, especially lately, to find a way to compromise with people and finally accept other opinions with nary a hint of bitterness in my replies. All people are different, and if I can't accept this, then I am doomed to live my life inside of a shell, constantly worrying about people and their often contrasting beliefs putting a crack in it.

Close mindness strikes again!!!

I'd argue that some views are dangerous to civilization and to the general well being of humanity, I'd also argue it's a civic duty to challenge such beliefs.

True, but couldn't one argue that those views are only dangerous because the people who harbor them do so in a fashion of extreme closed-mindedness? If people were to open up their minds and understand that not everyone is born to think or follow any one way, then the conflicts surrounding them would cease to exist. Too bad that's just a dream that will never come true, though.

"Become"? Like people were ever not terrible?

Well I guess it's just because as I get older I start to notice things like this.

Yes. Let us single out Americans as stupid and closed minded. More so then anyone else.

I'm not saying that all American's are close-minded. I'm American myself. I said that because in America, where I live, I see it all the time. I can't say the same for other countries because I've never lived there and seen it with my own eyes.

EDIT: I'm editing it out of the OP. I didn't intend for this discussion to turn into whether or not American's are close-minded. I'd prefer it if no one would bring up religious or political references so that we can discuss this without stepping on the toes of the moderators.

EDIT2: Seems as though Leydenne has done it for me. Thanks. :)

if people are too busy promoting their own opinion and won't listen, then i walk out of the conversation. i'm not interested in listening to poor excuses, and i don't mind saying i was wrong either so people don't need to get so worked up
why is it more important to be the one who is right than to come to a right conclusion? people must have no self confidence

people must have no self confidence

That is precisely why I found myself in the position of flaunting my opinions so often. I cannot stand being wrong because I tend to think of myself as a rather ignorant and stupid person, so I'll sometimes find myself so desperate to prove to others (but most importantly myself) that I'm not, even if all it does is show everyone that I, in fact, am.
