People keep complaining about combat

I say we worry about this when we actually play.

I agree I don't think you can really know a combat system until you actually use it. We will find out in a few days WO0T!!!

You can't blame people for looking at it and saying what it clearly not is. They are arguing the entire combat style is misinformed, and that's their opinion. They won't enjoy melee combat.

the system works great in my opinion. What else did you expect to do in combat exactly? you swing your sword and hold up your shield to block. I'm confused how dark souls strays from this norm. I love that game and demons souls, beat them both and got them day one.

But it does NOTHING new. You block with your shield...and strafe around to backstab 98% of the enemies. If you can't backstab you still block and strafe around to hit them in the back anyways. In fact skyrim is already more complex adding in power attacks that actually do something more then just give a funny looking animation and do a little more damage. You can also shield bash which is something missing from dark souls. You can also shield ram with the perk. Disarm and a host of other things. Not to mention if you time the block you can avoid all damage which is also, noticeably, missing from dark souls.

So enlighten me on what exactly is missing here? You have a shield and a sword. You block with your shield and hit stuff with your sword. What more do you expect? Anything too much more then that would be completely unrealistic as that is all melee combat entails. Unless your going to throw your weapon at the enemy which is a complete bad idea in any case.

I like how people complain without actually playing the game first. And if you played the game already, shame on you. :stare:

While I wouldn't always call it complaining, but you can watch preview videos and draw conclusions on those. It's not like the game is going to drastically change from now until it releases.

TES combat looks good to me.
But if you want to epic combat you should look at Kingdoms of Amalur which comes out 2/7/12.

Seems to me the better combat looks, the less of an RPG the game becomes. The less dice rolls and stats and skills matter, the better the combat looks. When I want very good looking combat, I play a FPS. When I want my skills and stats to matter and to build my character by increasing skills I play an RPG. Threads like this almost make me want to go back to the MW days when swords went right through bodies doing no damage and knowing that chance, skills and stats are what really matters.

So very true

Why not both(better combat and skills)? Isn't this what developers should be striving for? Better combat can really immerse you into a game just as much as dice rolling and story telling. I do feel that the combat I've seen from Skyrim so far is better than Oblivion, but could be better.

How will they know from a bad resolution video and now actually being able to do it themselves. They played the rest of TES games and Bethesda hasn't changed much.

Actually the game itself is not that great, we're talking about how the combat system was really nice for its time and influenced later games. The plot was very shallow and there were really no memorable characters. Great graphics and environments back then, however.

That also replies to the post above, we're not praising Dark Messiah as a game here. And I'm not sure what you mean by focusing on the combat system. Bethesda obviously focused ALOT on the combat in Skyrim, seeing how it's the only way your charactes can progress. For the record, a game studio has several different departments working on different areas of the game through the entire development stage.

Some of the arguments constantly repeated in this forum make it appear as if a production team works like this: Good news everyone, we'll make a new game! This year we'll make great combat! Next year we'll make pretty graphics! Everyone get to work!" And then suddenly they have one month left to focus on content....Do a little research, please.
Completely agree. Found Dark Messiah to be fairly bad. Combat system was good but I think Skyrim looks like it's going to be good too.

It looks improved from Oblivion but far from perfect. Magic especially seems pretty good. Melee could be far more responsive though (staggering, localized damage etc) and the combat in general should be more lethal. And parrying while not using a shield should really be possible. Mods will probably fix a lot.

What svck sis that Beth took in the studio that made Dark Messiah, which had a VERY good first-person melee combat system. Why couldn't they have borrowed from that or had some of them hlep with Skyrim? Seems like the perfect fit to help improve combat in TES.

Maybe next time.

they should have a look at dark souls or batman or assassins creeds combat. I think the issue with ESgames is u can't lock on to an enemy and I think that's why the combat isn't up to scratch with other games . these games make u focus on an enemy even while moving ur still locked on them so while ur swinging ur sword ur connected to that enemy where ES u just blindly swing and in a way hope for the best. that's what Beth needs to have a look at doing

No thanks, I dont want to be "locked on" to my target.

The problem is very clear to me. It is not the lack of staggering animations. We just hit enemies too many times. There is no parrying at all. I will be very glad when I see two swords clashing each other in a TES game. If they add this then the combat would be functionally perfect for my tastes.

One thing I would like to see as an improvement would be mid-combat moves. There must be special moves during combat too otherwise it can get really repetitive.

For example the giant dropping to his knees multiple times during combat and finally a finisher move at maybe third opportunity would be more pleasing to me than a very long mundane TES combat(chopsticks) and finally a finishing move.

It's because they don't get immersed in the game. If you just want to play for the combat don't bother getting skyrim. It's not a hack-n-slash game, it's a fantasy adventure game that takes you into a world where there are infinite choices and no consequences, not a linear world with nothing but waves if enemies and a couple maps.

This makes no sense. Combat makes up a HUGE part of TES game, having it be better, more fun, would not hurt immersion or ANYTHING.
