I agree with Leydenne that the companions were done well, albeit uneven at times. I can categorically say that companions have enhanced my immersion in Fallout 4, and I am typically very picky about talkative companions. If anything, I found that you really have to learn more about each companion before you can truly appreciate them. In fact, I feel like Beth purposely started all of them off as these typical bland archetypes but complicates our expectations by showing us that they're more than what we originally thought. Refer to my above post about Preston for an example of what I mean lol.
In particular, I really like Deacon. Prior to meeting Deacon I was very iffy about FO4 companions but he completely turned it around for me. I don't know if it's his California accent or his no-nonsense but chill approach to life, but he's the kind of guy that I'd be best friends with IRL lol.
Love Curie, of course and even thought she was adorable as a robot. Beth also using her to run a Turing Test on us lol.
Love Nick, but I am a huge fan of film noir so that explains it. Just wish there was a bit more noir/detective quests.
Macready is dope. Haven't played with him too much yet but lovde rolling with him when I have. I appreciate his flawed character.
Respect Preston. Already devoted fan'd Preston in an earlier post.
Like Danse, especially after I learned more about him. Explains why he always sounded so monotone...
Haven't played too much Hancock, but I like his character and what he represents in the game. Chems are good.
The companion that annoys me the most is Piper. It's not her fault, it's because her archetype as a newspaper muckraker is not supported well in-game. Her newspaper has no further relevance in the game world after meeting her, so it's hard to take her passion seriously.
