Is there any companion more hated than...

Post » Tue Jan 12, 2016 6:34 am

I enjoy how Preston looks but his character is pretty bland and I really wish they can make him STOP giving you quests. I don't mind doing some quests for him but after you take over the Castle, he should stop giving you quests and you can only get quests from listening to Radio Freedom or from visiting settlements that isn't under your control.

Deacon is bald by default. Setting an outfit for him messes around with his disguises.

I love how when you first get to Sanctuary he asks you to go save a settlement because his "hands are full" all he does is walk around town ...

MacCready!!!!!!! He's annoying and sounds like he's trying to extort me. I never use Preston as a companion, what's so bad about him?

I ecshew ALL companions. They get in my way, give away my position, set off traps, and make derisive comments when I loot junk. Really, how do you live in FO's world and not get the concept of recycling? No wonder I'm the only dude who can BUILD things...

OT: No, I hate Dogmeat just a *tiny* bit more than Preston.

Dogmeat for me so far.

My latest character actually forgot about him after I abandoned him again shortly after the Kellogg mission, circa 30 hrs later I went to Red Rocket for something for the first time in ages and he was there. So I scrapped his doghouse and bowl and left him there.

Stupid mutt.

I built a wee house in Sanctuary, assigned Sturges to the bed inside, put a doghouse in the yard, and finally dismissed Meat to Sanctuary.

He is Sturges' dog now.

I don't hate him, but, well, he is boring.

They gave him a few good lines.

But he only says those outside of companionship and mostly just complains when I'm picking up junk.

On a more serious note, why in the [censored] did they make half the companions question why you pick up crafting materials?

Imagine if they did that in TES: "Why even bother with these medicinal herbs?" See how stupid that sounds?

Actually, I can see some lines being pretty interesting especially if you get a companion that knows a thing or two about Alchemy.

Like: "Aw, a flower? Oh wait, you're keeping it, okay." or "I dare you to eat that. No wait, I'm not serious, that'll probably rot your throat on the way down."

I don't hate preston, I simply didnt take him on any of my characters because I saw no reason to do so. Plus later I read his aim is bad and he misses all the time, so I decided to simply never take him with me. My first companion was dogmeat, then I went to take codsworth, after that I got nick, then danse, and cait in another playthrough. Danse is by far my fav.

I like Preston generally. He is a honest guy with good intentions. That people don't like to be given quests in a game is a bit strange. Don't do them if you don't like. Preston for me usually commands the castle. That I'm the "general" is just a joke.

I don't use Preston as a companion much because he is a sweet-talker what I don't like and because I don't find him attractive. My companions should be useful in every situation, day and night. So it's Cait and MacCready for me. Currently I'm with Cait, she is still a bit reserved but she saved me quite some time with her shotgun.

It's the never-ending quests that are the problem. At least with the RR, the BOS and the Institute you get to CHOOSE if you want to do a quest. With the Minutemen they force them on you. Even random settlers at settlements will approach you with radiant quests.

Bethesda needs to offer an option to shut this off. I love settlements, but these endless quests forced on me are starting to turn me off. It's my one major complaint about the game.

I agree. At the very least limit these radiant things to three per settlement and then the people there will never bother you again unless they're under direct attack. That would allow a very large number of quests to remain in but also have a finishing point. The way things are now however keep me away from that aspect of the game completely until changes are made. It's just too much.

I only use Preston to farm XP and caps.

I get what they were trying to do, make a guy who was 'for the people', a pleasant individual who put everyone else's need above his own. But here's something they succeeded with Nick that they failed for both Preston AND Piper.

Make him memorable, unique. Nick's got it all. He's a Synth who acts like he's stepped out of a 1940s Noire film, mannerism and all. He's kind, patient, good with dogs (see Dogmeat) and kids (the reason he was accepted into Diamond City at all), knows when to call out the BS, provide his own snark, etc. He isn't loud and in-your-face like Piper, nor does he demand your undivided attention to his quests like Preston.

Preston doesn't have anything like that. He's just an average wastelander. There's nothing that really makes him stand out above the rest. I like Deacon, Cait, Curie and Nick BECAUSE they're unique in their own ways. The rest? Not so much. Preston? He's got nothing going for him save for the backstory about the idealistic kid that got disappointed when half of his former team killed the other half. It's the Wasteland, bub. Things like that happens, sorry.

I think deacon is way worse he all ways goes down and never helps in battle, and always tells you to run away when in fights. I sent him to a town with no power, no food, town has nothing and i let him suffer for getting me killed so much. Damn bastered should have stayed with the railroad and he always lies to you about [censored].

Look at it this way...

BGS could have resurrected Stinky and made him a companion. (Yes, I do mean RESURRECTED, and on a good karma play through to boot.)

Seems a lot of people agree Preston is annoying, lol. Poor guy, kind of feel bad for him now.

I think if Bethesda had alternative ways to distribute the radiant quests it wouldn't make Preston seem so much like a quest vending machine.

I still think that they did a pretty good job with the companions on this outing though. I mean, some I don't like because their characters are just not for me. But overall, its been fun traveling with different peeps. First time I was tempted to try them all.

But Dogmeat is way more effective, Codsworth was surprisingly badass and surprisingly more warm and funny than a robot has a right to be. Nick is cool, and a nice shout out to 1940s film noir detectives. I didn't hang with Curie very much, but may go back to her. I personally love Deacon - and yes, he changes all the time, if you don't put gear on him, he's a compulsive liar etc. - I also love that you can meet him several times and not realize it before you ever meet him for real.

Poor Preston is just kind of, as someone else said, a boy scout, but I can see that appealing to some. I do wish he wasn't the radiant quest vending machine though. I learned to just ignore the quests and fail them and not care. Too busy doing other stuff.

I liked Cait, and yes, her recover story may feel a bit rushed, but those are often the restrictions in quest writing and character development in a game. Strong I found just kind of boring - Fawkes was such a funny, nuanced character that Strong suffers in comparison - I found Strong took a knee far quicker than any other companion for me. Piper was pretty uninteresting to me, although I liked learning the back story - I haven't traveled with her much. And Macready surprised me - took me a while to realize who he was, and his back story was pretty sad, actually. I found him pretty useful too.

I give my companions better weapons and give them plenty of ammo for it and then equip it on them - they will use a different weapon if they have ammo, Give them choices - I lolled when I turned around and Macready was blasting away with a missile launcher I had him carry, not realizing I had given him ammo for it as well. I had not even equipped it on him, but his AI was like "oooh, missile launcher!"

The nice thing is that you can use the companions or not and just roll with things. But by and large, I have not found the companions to be a problem this time out. Although for a while Deacon had invisible hands for some reason, during a specific mission. That was weird. Heh.

So, if one doesn't visit Concord and hence never meets the Minutemen, can one still use Sanctuary as a building base? I like the idea of making my own little private fort, inhabitants just me and Dogmeat. I'm guessing, though, that doesn't unlock without Preston.

Ok, now this has been moved from general I can talk more about what Preston did to win me over to really liking the guy.

Out of the three non-Institute endings he is the least dikeish about pressing the button.

I suppose it depends on the player but that moment, for me, was very much a kind of May God have mercy on my soul type moment.

Out of Maxson, Desdemona and Preston he was the only one to echo how I felt.

Okay I just gotta come out a defend Preston a bit. I definitely hated him at first, no doubt. He just seemed lackluster in every way and severely affected my first impressions of Fallout 4.

However, after getting to know him (affinity), I feel like his disposition and even his voice acting is completely consistent with his character and background. I don't want to spoil it for anybody but he's a simple guy trying to fill big shoes, and well, knows he can't. I think a lot of us can relate to him and be inspired that despite being very normal and ordinary, he tries his best to believe.

Seriously, try hearing him out a little.
