I still think that they did a pretty good job with the companions on this outing though. I mean, some I don't like because their characters are just not for me. But overall, its been fun traveling with different peeps. First time I was tempted to try them all.
But Dogmeat is way more effective, Codsworth was surprisingly badass and surprisingly more warm and funny than a robot has a right to be. Nick is cool, and a nice shout out to 1940s film noir detectives. I didn't hang with Curie very much, but may go back to her. I personally love Deacon - and yes, he changes all the time, if you don't put gear on him, he's a compulsive liar etc. - I also love that you can meet him several times and not realize it before you ever meet him for real.
Poor Preston is just kind of, as someone else said, a boy scout, but I can see that appealing to some. I do wish he wasn't the radiant quest vending machine though. I learned to just ignore the quests and fail them and not care.
Too busy doing other stuff.
I liked Cait, and yes, her recover story may feel a bit rushed, but those are often the restrictions in quest writing and character development in a game. Strong I found just kind of boring - Fawkes was such a funny, nuanced character that Strong suffers in comparison - I found Strong took a knee far quicker than any other companion for me. Piper was pretty uninteresting to me, although I liked learning the back story - I haven't traveled with her much. And Macready surprised me - took me a while to realize who he was, and his back story was pretty sad, actually. I found him pretty useful too.
I give my companions better weapons and give them plenty of ammo for it and then equip it on them - they will use a different weapon if they have ammo, Give them choices - I lolled when I turned around and Macready was blasting away with a missile launcher I had him carry, not realizing I had given him ammo for it as well. I had not even equipped it on him, but his AI was like "oooh, missile launcher!"
The nice thing is that you can use the companions or not and just roll with things. But by and large, I have not found the companions to be a problem this time out. Although for a while Deacon had invisible hands for some reason, during a specific mission. That was weird. Heh.
