For anybody that is interested I'm updating the CFG maker with some new settings, will update the topic when a new version is online.

This looks fantastic!

Can you add to the webpage a little bit of explanation about the effect of some of these settings?

For example, many of us do not fully understand the following terms or how to decide the best setting:

  • Dimensions of the shadow buffer image
  • Use the double-shadow private lighting
  • Use hardware textures instead of virtual textures for implicit gui images
  • This Value is added to the true combined light z value to prevent ling streched shadows
  • maximum dim-shadow resolution (set to same as "Dimensions of the shadow buffer image")
  • if 1 do not allow any dimshadows on breakables
  • enables shadow of player model (!not working at the moment!)
  • toggles RLE support
  • budget in ms for CUDA transcoding (lower better/high end)
  • controls Cuda texture transcoding
  • minimum mip level installed on the hard disk
  • Use uncompressed vmtr data
  • maximum number of transcoded pages per frame
  • Floating point max aniso for physical textures
  • Set the finest mip that can be accessed
  • Floating point bias for drawing virtual textures (set to same as "Set the finest mip that can be accessed")
  • change lod bias on mipmapped images
  • Compression method for vmtr pages
  • HDP Diffuse - amount of quantization to apply in the range 0 to 255
  • HDP Normal - amount of quantization to apply in the range 0 to 255
  • HDP Power - amount of quantization to apply in the range 0 to 255
  • HDP Specular - amount of quantization to apply in the range 0 to 255

Nice work! :foodndrink:

And as BootySweat said, would be helpful to add in some descriptions of what the setting controls do.

I like the cfg maker idea you have but it needs more information about each item you are editing.

I don't want to make a config and not know what each thing is.

Nice tool, very good work. :celebration: don't suppose it's possible to add any audio config options, I'm having a few problems with that would probably be handy for other users too.

Once again great work!

I can add what ever options needed. If you have suggestions for options and values that should be added please let me know and I can add them to the config tool.

I have update the RAGE CFG maker to version 1.1

RAGE - cfg version: 1.1
  • added - descriptions to the options hover over them to get some info on the settings
  • added - several default added cvars to ensure the engine uses all its functions
  • added - number of anti-aliasing samples (0= no multi-sampled FBO) r_multiSamples
  • added - compression method for generated pages "mt_genCompression"
  • fixed - force everything to high quality setting "image_useCompression"

Hope the descriptions help and make some sense....

Looks great, KillerSneak, thanks very much for putting this together.

I will give it a try and review the difference.

I would like to make a suggestion that you add instructions to the page for how to create the rageconfig.cfg file and where to save it, as many people coming across your website may not know this.

for example
HOWTO: To use the file copy the code below and put it into a new text file named "rageConfig.cfg" in these locations:
For Single-Player - "Steam\steamapps\common\rage\base"
For Multi-Player - "Steam\steamapps\common\rage\mp\base"

Well, I have the new drivers and I used this and maxed everything out and it really helps a lot. I am getting 60fps and everything looks as good as it can without a texture pack. Great work!

I'm not sure exactly what changes this resulted in, but it seems that the texture quality is improved at close range after using KillerSneaks tweaks. I think it has also improved the quality of the shadows, but it's hard for me to distinguish this.

It seems to result in a more crisp image quality at the start of races:

11.9 driver: game did not launch (CTD on startup)

11.9 driver + Oct 3 hotfix: game launched fine, excellent frame rate, excellent appearance except for occasional and very brief artifacting in locations like Ghost hideout. The artifacting appeared as striated thin diagonal lines and did not affect gameplay very much as it was a rare occurance.

11.9 driver + Oct 4 Rage performance driver: no more striated line artifacts, however, in some areas I experienced phantom weapon parts or bullets floating in the air next to my gun. Also NPC flickering in Wellspring.

11.10 driver: fixed NPC flickering/floating bullets etc., and so far no other problems except only one occasion very minor flicker visible in the buy screen with merchant in Wellspring.

I updated allot of settings that can improve the textures and shadows (in the tool). The engine for example doesn't seem to add "anti-aliasing" by default (can be set up to 16x now) and the materials can be shown "none" compressed now that should give better over IQ for the materials used on surfaces the same can be set for textures/images if everything is uncompressed they should look more crisp. The mip-map settings is also important for far away textures.

r_sb_imageSize "1024"
r_dimShadowResolution "768" <- set to 1024 for even better shadows but risk the occasional crash.

will greatly improve the shadows if run on 1024 but can make the game crash as the shadow buffer can be "over"filled to put it simple.

The lod settings on -1 / -2 will really make the texture more sharp @ close range/overall as it's a negative value.

Would it be possible to change the resolution with these edits?
Edit - Never mind, I fixed it.

I could add resolution settings to the config maker if needed.

@ everybody:
Thanks for the kind words, if there are any settings / error's in the tool please let me know so I can update it and fix/add more to it. I'm planning on adding Sound options to the RAGE CFG maker but I haven't gone into the sounds at all yet.

I personally would love to have it on there. I think the default it 720p and I want to bump it up to 1080p

I will get on it. Ill get working on the resolution settings and sound settings asap. I haven't even played the game myself that much (anarchy edition) as I have been busy with the settings and tool since day one... eheheh

Very nice, thank you for this generator. Just tried with all settings to ''maxed out'' and the game looks awesome overall atm. I would like to see better quality of textures though (walls, outer world, everything around your character). Running on Ati 6870 1Gb, Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3.16Ghz and on WIn 7 64bit.

I'm not sure exactly what changes this resulted in, but it seems that the texture quality is improved at close range after using KillerSneaks tweaks. I think it has also improved the quality of the shadows, but it's hard for me to distinguish this.

WOW! Thank you, your settings worked perfect for me.

Very nice, thank you for this generator. Just tried with all settings to ''maxed out'' and the game looks awesome overall atm. I would like to see better quality of textures though (walls, outer world, everything around your character). Running on Ati 6870 1Gb, Core 2 Duo E8500 @ 3.16Ghz and on WIn 7 64bit.
could update the textures to 16384x16384 but you would need atleast a 2GB or SLI/CF setup. I'm running a Sapphire HD 5870 2GB Toxic myself so I could do some more testing on that.

@website errors
Indeed the site is getting hammered a bit at the moment because of the tool. I'm looking into the problem (I never had this much traffic to the website a specific moment before)

Any feedback and or suggestions are more than welcome
I knew it wouldn't be too long before someone came up with something like this. Good work.

Those textures aren't actually in the game though.
