Hopsin is a funny guy.. I used to be obsessed with his music.

Anyway, my favourite rap song has to be Wastin' Time by Ol Dirty Bastard. mmmm

Also I still love Tupac

I love a bit of beastie boys upon occasion. I also like 50 cent's earlier stuff, "Many men" is awesome, Eminem has a great verse on that. What's everyone's opinion on OFWGKTA? Also know as Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. I don't really like the music. I think they're trying to be crude and graphic for the sake of it. I respect Tyler the Creator's ability to generate a buzz and they're definitely unique in the way they market themselves. It seems like a lot of groups are being formed because of the success they've had.

Check out Frank Ocean, I'm not saying it's necessarily rap but I don't care enough to get down into the technicalities of it.

I was pleasantly surprised by his mixtape Nostalgia,Ultra. Plus, it's free, so what's the worst that could happen?

Not many people know of Haystak. He's a great rapper, but still underground.

You shoe-horn anybody who listens to any kind of rap/hip-hop into a single category, and you expect people not to be offended?

There is also a such thing as non-gangsta rap. Not all rap is about poppin' fools, smackin' hoes, and smokin drugz dawg, for realzz.

Aside from that, I don't know many people that listen to just rap. I also don't know any people that listen to gangsta rap because of it's subject matter; they just like the beats, as do I.

I listen to hip-hop (including "gangsta" stuff) and I have long hair and wear t-shirts and hoodies for punk and metal bands most of the time. Fifteen years ago I was eight, but fifteen years from now I imagine I'll still be listening to Public Enemy. Will it be okay then?

Alas the bygone glory days of Rap.

You want to check out Run DMC "Raising Hell".

Ice T "Colors"

Eric B & Rakim "Paid In Full"

and the LORDS of social and political commentary in rap: Public Enemy: "Yo Bum Rush the Show", "It Takes A Nation of Millions", "Fear of a Black Planet" and "Apocalypse '91 the Enemy Strikes Black".

Also check out "AmeriKKK's most Wanted by Ice Cube and NWA's "Straight Outta Compton".

After these albums Rap as a genre was destroyed.

Public Enemy had raised the social, cultural and political profile of rap music raising the bar head and shoulders above other musical styles.

After 2 Live Crew's "Nasty as They Wanna Be" rap was dragged down into the gutter and has never recovered.

Before it was about history, social commentary and politics.

After 2 Live Crew it was all about drugs and promiscuous six.

Just look at NWA's pre 2 Live Crew album "Straight Outta Compton" v.s their post 2 Live Crew "Effil4zaggin" to see the legaxy Luke "Skywalker" Campell left us.

Shame.

^ Alas, there'll always be people like this "walking around" with a superior attitude about music, despite clearly having no basis for it. Strangely it seems to rear it's head on these forums when discussing rap, still the convenient demon du jour.

I'm not a big fan of rap nowadays, but I second posts like that from Azrael concerning the old school variety (Public Enemy, Slick Rick, KidNPlay, Fresh Prince, hell, in some occasions BIG). Even though I know most rap artists don't make their own electronic music, being an electronic industrial fan, first and foremost, decent electro sounds like that from Regulators catches my ear. Hell, the first ten seconds or so of Lady Gaga's Poker Face catches my ear, until she opens her mouth. I think that's probably why most rap doesn't seem to get along with me. My ears prefer non-vocal sounds, and rap is a vocally-based type of music. In order for me to like the song I must like the actual music. In quite a few heavy metal or electronic songs, I can overlook bad vocals to focus on the music playing, same goes for rap, until it's just too prominently annoying.

How is that exclusive to rap? How is that exclusive to music? Your argument rings very hollow, if you don't like the genre dont post in its thread. Its very simple yet everyone seems to think rap is the exception and it's cool to bag on it. You don't see me going into the metal threa and talking trash about the way metal fans dress and act, so why do it here?

OK guys, this has gone the way of previous Rap topics, posting links to music with forum censored language despite a note in the OP to say it is not permitted.

Closed, and it will be a very long time before another one is permitted.
