Rap Music

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 2:11 am

Ok, so I couldn't find another thread. I'm really looking for some new rap artists and songs to listen to. I love rap music, but I'm not a fan of the "Partyin' in da V.I.P makin; it rain on all these hoes." rubbish.

Who are some good rap artists that have meaningful lyrics and preferably a good hook/chorus. I'm not a fan of rap that is monotonous and all one sound. I like an up beat chorus.

I'm a big fan of Tech N9ne, Eminem, a bit of Shad, some T.I, but I haven't downloaded any new stuff in ages now!

Any other rap fans? Feel free to share here.

I quite like Gil-Scott Heron, sometimes called the Godfather of Rap.

Check out http://www.youtube.com/user/TImeflies4850, they're not massive yet but I find them really nice to listen to, quite an interesting sound in my opinion.

I like Timeflies.

but I ran a rap/hip hop thread for around 3 or 4 threads but people couldn't respect opinions and such, so Roh shut it down. I believe he said don't make another, so be prepared.

Yeah, he's written a notice in the OP, but I think we'll be alright as long as we're careful with what we link.
I'm a massive fan of Tinie Tempah, who interestingly used to live in my town.

A question to Rohugh though. If Vevo cuts explicit language out, despite the fact that you can obviously tell it's there, is that still an offense?

Top 3 albums of all time:
E.1999 Eternal (BTNH)
Blazing Arrow (Blackalicious)
Deltron 3030 (Deltron 3030)

Bone Thugs ~N~ Harmony stand as my all time favorite rap group. But they are more 90's gangsta rap than anything else, though their new stuff has been toned down quite a bit. Blackalicious, is probably the best positive tip rapper out there. If you like upbeat positive raps, get Blazing Arrow. The Gift of Gab is the rapping half of Blackalicious and also has a couple of solo albums out that are worth checking out. Deltron 3030 is a joining of Del the Funky Homosapien (of Hieroglyphics fame, another you should check out), Dan the Automator, and DJ Kid Koala. It is a futuristic album set in the year 3030 after the apocalypse. It is a fantastic album. There will hopefully be a sequel to it this year.

Other artists of note, Wu-Tang, Redman, The Fugees, Talib Kweli, Common, 2Pac, B.I.G., Rhymefest, Run DMC, Flobots, Busta Rhymes, Mos Def, Nas, Jurassic 5, Brother Ali.... I'll think of more.

Lupe Fiasco is good suggestion and I personally love Kid Cudi. I admit however he is not traditional rap by any means and is a bit of a acquired taste. Try downloading "It's Just Scott", it's his newest mixtape which he did more rapping on.

I have some Kid Cudi, I like some of his stuff like Down and out, but there's too much useless filler in his albums. I am also a big fan of Tinie Tempah, he's a cool guy.

EDIT: Those Timeflies guys were really unique. That main singer is very talented.

Also this song by Jewish rappers DeScribe and Y-Love is more about message. It's also catchy, I discovered this because they used to always play the music video at a bar I went to back home.

Most of his lyrics are nonsense though.

Ie: "Im so wet baby, I need a wetsuit."

REALLY!? It just makes me angry that someone can get away with that.

Nothing wrong with Lil' Wayne. He, Eminem and Wacka Flocka Flame are some of my favorite rappers right now.

Fair enough, each to their own and all that jazz. I just personally can't stand him.

For me Li' Wayne fell off after the Carter III, he was solid up until the first mixtape after that album. Now he has zero premise in any of his songs and his lyrics are inane babble.

As long as we don't hear it. It is difficult as we have to keep the forums "family friendly" so apart from linking to something very inappropriate the worst that will happen is the link gets nuked and a moderator has to write a grumpy PM.

Yeah, I probably did but let's give it another go - makes me listen to music I don't like but ....... Oh well.

For me, Lil Wayne's older stuff was a lot better. His last CD The Carter IV was meh. I still like some songs on there though. I'm digging Drake a lot more though. Some of this music actually does annoy me, but I can respect some of the more creative songs.

I can't stand Drake now. I bought hos first album and it was decent Over, up all night, want this forever were all great songs. Now he's just another "I'm really rich and girls love me." Rapper, lyrics have nothing to them.

And take care is a silly song. I don't get why everyone loves it. It's enough to put me to sleep.

A Tribe Called Quest
De La Soul
Public Enemy
Eric B. & Rakim
2pac
Nas
Common
Mos Def
Wu Tang Clan and related solo projects

A lot of that you could call hip-hop, but as far as I'm concerned hip-hop is just rap that's not boring.

I don't like "Take Care". I like "Headlines". I don't listen to the radio ever, so I don't listen to a lot of the more popular things to the point of annoyance.

I like this South African rapper named Jack Parow. Look him up. He's awesome, "Dans, Dans, Dans" was the first song I ever heard by him and the music video made me laugh so hard. It's hard to take him serious but it's good stuff. I'd be surprised if many people have actually heard of him.

Was never a fan of Lil' Wayne. I always saw him as a biter who took beats and flows, put in new words and called it his own.
