references to popular tv shows you would like in the game

I say their should be a guy saying "the drums, the constant sound of drums beating in my head." (he's clearly insane) he then tries to kill you and if you kill him, another guy with a different face says it.

or perhaps 3 kids on the strip, one tries to scam you for 25 bottle caps, one says alot of smart things, the other probably has down syndrome talking about buttered toast and gravy

anyone else?

I am not sure what the first reference is. Is it that trippy flash animation called "Flashback"?

One quest should involve the Courier having to settle a military dispute between the towns of Jericho and New Bern.

I can tolerate vague references, but if they were as blatant as the jokes in Fallout 2, I'm going to kill some people. :stare:

Only if it involves the search for a nuke that a former CIA agent had buried in his back yard.

J.E. Sawyer hated the jokes and silliness in Fallout 2 as well, and as project lead for New Vegas he vetoed other developer staff from adding them in to Vegas, insisting that everything be of a serious tone. However, it was recognized that some fans loved the jokes (I can't imagine who), so the Wild Wasteland perk was created so that players who wanted silliness could take it and see jokes and references and easter eggs, and the people that wanted a serious post-apocalyptic world with no Monty Python would never have to run into those things in their game by simply not taking the Wild Wasteland perk. So now I am good with all the discussions of jokes and silliness people want to see included, because even if it is, I'll never have to see it.

I think a bit of it would be good for everyone. It's just the over the top, too much that was the problem in FO:2. I would rather we all get just a dab and not have to take a perk and then get too much of a good thing. Too much is too much by definition but then again, not enough is just not enough.

I would rather we all get just a dab and not have to take a perk and then get too much of a good thing. Too much is too much by definition but then again, not enough is just not enough.

The problem is that different people have different expectations as to how much constitutes too much. From the interview I read it sounds like some team members were wanting to throw them in all the time. That sort of thing snowballs and you end up with everyone designing a location or quest wanting to get their own joke in and make it funnier than their peers'. The black humor will still be present despite the perk, but even one Holy Hand grenade stumbled upon by someone roleplaying and feeling the mood is enough to destroy the atmosphere and feeling of the game session like popping a balloon. Making a gate for admission to the silliness is the only way to keep all parties happy. I have a feeling that if the idea for the perk wasn't thought of, there would have been no silliness.

Josh Sawyer: Okay, so basically – the Fallout franchise has, in its past, had a lot of goofy humour in it – and people seem really polarized by it. Some people were like, 'Ah – I love it! Put more Monty Python reverences in it!' and some people were like 'I can't stand it—it really irritates me in every way, shape and form.' I generally do not like the pop-culture references.

In any case, a lot of our designers wanted to put that stuff in there and I'd be saying 'no, no, no, don't do it.' Eventually we thought, you know, there's probably an easy way to do this, which is a perk that basically says 'I wanna see all the goofy [censored].' So we have Wild Wasteland. You opt into it at the beginning and then you get to see all the goofy crap.

I think we all know that the silliness being referred to is not the gnomes and teddy bear silliness, but Star Trek Shuttle, Godzilla, and Monty Python silliness.

That's a little condescending :P
So basically you must be an idiot to think the holy grenade is funny..? lol

I think of it more as having a good sense of humor, I enjoy seeing a couple humerous reference's here n' there.(no i don't think they should be around every corner and yes I understand the wild wasteland perk.)

Some people take things too seriously. Honestly, I'd be bothered by it too if they didn't have this perk. It doesn't offend me in concept わねかと oh god why am I typing in japanese I knew I shouldn't have installed that IME

Indeed jokes are good for the soul lol.
I like the wild wasteland perk mostly because it gives you the Option to experience the funny reference's or vise versa. I love it when a game is catered to satisfy all the different fan's by giving them plenty of optional features to play with :D

Pawn Stars!

Rick: What's up? What do you have there?

Courier: This is a real laser rifle used by the Vault Dweller himself.

Rick: Do you have papers proving this?

Courier: Ummm no

Rick: ok this is a really cool piece but I have my doubts, I have a buddy who knows all about energy weapons and maybe he can help us out ok?

Courier: ok sounds good.

(Rick speaks to camera) I really hope this is real because if it is I want it I think I could make some money on it if I get the price right.

(Dana comes in) Hi I'm Dana I'm an expert in Energy weapons.

Dana: So Rick what are your concerns?

Rick: ____ here says this is the Vault Dwellers laser rifle but we don't have the papers for it. Can you tell me if it's from around his time??

Dana: (looks over gun) well the parts look right but it's actually from around 40 years after he disappeared.

Rick: Agghhh well that changes things. Thanks Dana

Dana: No problem

Rick: So it's not the Vault Dwellers gun but I can make you an offer on it. How much do you want for it?

Courier: 3,000 bottlecaps

Rick: Hell no, I'll take it for 100 bottlecaps

Courier: Ok I need cash now anyway (shakes hands with Rick)

Rick: Glad we could make a deal. Chum!! Do this man's paperwork.

Chum: Hey can I play with the gun!!!!

Old Man: Hell no Chum stay away from it.

Chum (shoots his own face)

Chum: Haha this is Fallout Old Man I'm super strong for no particular reason. I can take a Laser Rifle shot to the face.

Old Man. Great I've been wanting to do that for a while.

:tops: Pawn Stars FTW

I just forgot to add the smiley to give it context.

"I can't imagine who" :whistling: See? All better.

Seriously though (ha ha), I don't mind jokes and humor, for instance I loved the drugged up alcoholic six-crazed teddy bears hiding in nooks and crannies, or Protectrons crapping scrap metal into toilets. The subtle humor that can be missed if you aren't looking for it, and fits in universe. For instance, we have an easy explanation for the aforementioned funnies - some raider or scavenger set them up out of boredom or to give the next person to come along a laugh. When physical objects from the Star Trek universe or Monty Python movies start appearing, it all becomes too much.

Let me give you one example that caused me to forever hate Fallout 2's easter eggs and almost caused me to stop playing the game. It was my first character, and I had just completed the Temple of Trials and some quests in Arefu. I hated the Temple, but that was done and I was now ready to start playing the game proper, and set off for nearby Klamath. I got stopped by a random encounter. I suddenly appeared in the middle of a herd of exploding brahmin. Being a measly 2nd level, I died immediately. So the developers made a joke, and I was the punchline. My last save was in the Temple of Trials, which I had to do over again if I wanted to continue playing, so I very nearly rage quit the game, but my love of Fallout 1 stopped me, and I gave it another chance.

Jokes can have an chilling effect on game play if not handled carefully. Many of the special encounters meant to be jokes in Fallout 2 could kill you, or give you over-powered weapons or items.

I admit, I like the Fallout series most when it is a serious and logical post-apocalyptic RPG, which is one reason I am so excited for hardcoe Mode. Fallout 2 just left a foul taste in my mouth with its special encounters and easter eggs. The game had flying whales, crashed Star Trek shuttles, aliens, Godzilla, portals to the past, exploding brahmin, and talking statues. The developers were having a giggle fit, and someone should have spoken up like Sawyer did when this sort of thing started to happen in New Vegas. Anyone who has been in the Fallout community for long knows that the number one complaint about Fallout 2 is the rampant silliness. Like Sawyer said, people either loved it or were appalled. How many times have you heard someone say (or type :hehe: ) that they loved Fallout 2, it had better gameplay than Fallout 1 and was more fun, but sometimes it just got too silly?

I fully plan on playing through New Vegas someday with the Wild Wasteland perk, but it will be a time of my own choosing, when I feel like being silly.

Ed, Edd, and Eddy? One thing I never understood was why they always charged 25 cents when jawbreakers were only 5. Good show though. And toast and gravy is awesome together.

I wish they'd have thought to make it an INI variable, or to build it into the launcher. Icewind Dale 2 had the Heart of Fury option; FO:NV could have had a simple check-box for both a hardcoe and Wild Wasteland. As it is you lose a perk to see the game as it should have been by default. :(

**Why isn't it a trait then? (traits are optional right?)

Only problem I see is that its actual trait. Should just be an option before you start the game and you cannot change otherwise afterwards.

Only thing I see as trait worthy is some hostile reference character and gear you can't get anyway else (like a grenade.....).

I would love to see a talking molerat that states its trying to find the answer to life. and you must answer correctly or it will try to kill you.

You can answer:

1. Love

2. Death

3.42 ( Int must be either either 1 or 10)

4. Life is meaningless and weak, the duration of the insentient robotic race will out last it.(if there is a cyborg perk or something)

Is it a trait? (that would be good IMO, as traits are 100% optional, and you could just as soon start a game with them as with out them).
