Scariest Non-Horror Games

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 12:34 pm

What non-horror games do you think are scariest?
Mine are Minecraft and the 3D Legend of Zelda games
The reason I say Minecraft is because of the caves. I can deal with the mobs without any difficulty, but the mob noises and footsteps from all around you but you cannot tell where from, the cramped conditions and the near pitch darkness cause me to panic and leave the caves immediately.
And for the 3D Legend of Zelda games, Re-Deads. That is all I need to say about that.

Yep, it's not that bad. Especially once you get the Gibdo Mask. That really helps me deal with Re-Deads and Gibdos.

Thief: The Dark Project. Stealth game. Scary stealth game. Extremely [censored] scary stealth game. Splinter Cell and MGS make you feel like a badass, while in Thief: TDP, half the time you feel like you're the one being hunted. :cold:

In fact, that feeling pervades the entirety of the Thief series, IMO, just not as extreme as in TDP.

Oh that's a good one.
I don't really have much to add, of course there are some games that have scary parts, such as Dark Messiah (running from all those spiders).
And maybe the marine missions in the AvP games.

I guess you could argue that Metro 2033 is a horror game, but I don't really count it as one. Either way, creepy as hell in parts. Especially the pipes. Good god, the pipes.

I found BioShock pretty creepy in places too.

Thanks for reminding me that I have Metro, I bought it a while back, but my PC couldn't handle it and I forgot, I upgraded my PC November 2011, maybe it's time to give it a go.

I love that game. One of my all-time favorites. It was quite scary and terrifying back when I was younger, and it would probably still give me shivers at certain parts. :P

Dead Space. It has too much in-your-face action to be considered a horror game :teehee:

More seriously, STALKER is a good choice, trying to find safe place in lethal mutant and anomaly filled wasteland at night in a thunderstorm... no other game does anything like that.

Homeworld: Cataclysm. Honestly the only time I've been terrified by an RTS. The screams, oh god, the screams as the beast infects your ships and you're desperately inputting the scuttle command so that you don't have to deal with even more enemies. And I first played it when I was quite young so my response may be influenced by trauma from then, I rarely dared play past the fourth mission which is when you first meet the beast.

Thief is the scariest I've played. Special credit goes to the Bonehoard and Cathedral from the first game, and the library in Lord Gervasius' house in the second game. I've not played Thief: Deadly Shadows, so I've not personally experienced the Abysmal Gale or the Shalebridge Cradle.

But eeriness is conducive to testing!

Because I heard too many people praise that level before I actually played it, it was a bit of a let down for me. I'm sure it would've been much better if I hadn't known about it in advance.

Ah, yeah, that I can understand. If you're expecting something huge, it's a disappointment, but when you start the level having no idea what's going to happen next, it's brilliant.

Thats one of my favourite quests in a game ever. :) I wasn't expecting much from the game - in fact that was one of the first things I did and it really made me realise the game was going to be good.

In terms of non horror scaries...hmm..I think the only one that really stands out was FO3 the first time I went into the metro. Spinning around and seeing a feral ghoul come at you isn't a nice sight.

I also found Myst quite frightening but mainly because I was expecting something to happen the entire time. I didn't realise it was a pure puzzle game and constantly expected something to come screaming at me. ;)

I always thought the Hollywood mansion was more terrifying. Those Tzimisce Szlachta jumping out of the walls rattled my nerves first time through.
