Shields Give me more armor please

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 4:50 am

I wouldn't mind some form of shield. Picking up a car door or something in the middle of combat to protect from bullet damage (or a melee attack) for a short time would actually be very awesome. Chances of it in the game are exactly 0% as the engine for Fallout 3 doesn't support any type of equipment on the left arm.

Yes it does. It's the same engine as Oblivion, and that had shields.

I was just thinking about this.

Obviously there are thematic problems.

Realistically if I had to kill a mole rat with a lead pipe, I’d come up with some kind of shield to protect myself. It is post apocalyptica, use whatever you can to survive, right?

Putting shields in is just too reminiscent of medieval RPG. The game already suffers from the ol’ “oblivion w/ guns” stigma. (Who cares if this is true, they’re both great games.)

I think the lack of shields creates a different, more modern atmosphere. And that atmosphere is what keeps fallout unique.

Aesthetics aside, I wouldn’t mind having the OPTION of using a shield because it does make sense.

Make it a high strength / high level perk for the melee specialist, kinda of goes along with specialization perks like the demolition expert, pyromaniac, or ninja.

It is unlikely this will happen though, but not the worst idea.

well I think that in order for it to work right, it'd have to be realistic, also you could only use it with pistols or smgs, one handed small guns, and melee weapons, also, different ones could only be so strong and only take so many blows/shots before it gets useless, and doesn't stop anything. like a trash can lid wouldn't even last one shot, but could easily take a few good punches or baseball bat blows.

I like the idea of shields since melee was not all that satisfying. I don't understand why people don't want this because it makes it to much like Oblivion. If you don't want to use it, don't.

Careful you might get overwhelmed by people calling you a homophobe/gay hater :o
thats what happened to me on the wiki haha no joke :P

As for the topic goes i agree that makeshift shields are a good idea with the riot shield as a rare/unique.

If we have shields in FNV I want a kevlar shield and a high powered rifle with a bayonet. How's that for melee :P

Yeah, I just don't get the "this isn't Oblivion/TES" comments. Fallout has always had spears, yet shields are too much fantasy? Really? Oblivion doesn't even have spears! :P

Fallout has a mixture of primitive and high-tech equipment. It's part of the charm. There's nothing contradictory to the setting about using a shield.

To me it seems more likely that they didn't want to have to deal with the mechanics of blocking bullets, laser beams, and plasma globs with a shield.

I like the way you think. :D

I vote for shields... Love the idea.

Car doors might be a bit heavy for anybody without a 10 in strength, but I can find riot armor and nightsticks, so the riot shields should be sitting right next to them.
Seeing tribals using shields with their throwing spears and hatchets would be very cool... now that I think about it, how come the Legion don't have none?

This is true. Super mutants have already been shown to have stop sign shields. Why wouldn't some tribal do the same thing? And it would make perfect sense for the legion to make shields for their melee troops.

One step close to Oblivion With Guns.

I don't like the idea.
Shields just feel so... Weird...

This, it wouldn't work except maybe if you carried around a knife in your other hand, but.....It dosent seem that fun. Fallout is about feeling strong and weak at the same time

Depends on the way it would be implemented (starigthforward Oblivion way would be too simplistic in my opinion, for example). I agree with the idea that there could be some form of shields, though I won't be missing them if there are not.

I agree, and if your shield and knife wielding self comes across a super mutant with a mini-gun, you're gonna hope you have that "runs like cheetah" perk trained up.

You couldn't carry a shield and a pistol? Why not? A man-hole cover with a handle would be heavy, but you could certainly block a head shot from a rifle with it.

Not the point. I was responding to the people saying that it's too much like Oblivion. Primitive weapons are already part of Fallout. Excluding shields for thematic reasons seems ridiculously arbitrary to me.

What about all the African warriors that have used shields and spears for centuries? They don't have an invisible third arm on the spear side do they? http://www.corbisimages.com/images/67/49CC8435-9F18-4341-8B6D-D0F3FCDD5F08/HU057449.jpg
Throwing spears are a one-handed weapon.... Now Vikings used to throw two spears at once... They couldn't have used a shield.

No.
Cross-dressing is a bad idea.

This is a good idea and makes sense.

no, using a trash can lid versus a .50 caliber sniper round or a 12.7mm handgun is a bad idea, cross dressing lets you do the time warp, therefore is made of pure and most valuable win :D :flamethrower:

It's no worse an idea than trying to fight someone with a plasma rifle with a sledge hammer, but people do it.

We've already got SWAT-style security armour, a riot shield wouldn't be that out of place.

I guess your right, but personally I don't like shields they can implement them for people that want them in a fallout game, but I personally wouldn't want one

I'm not saying it's all that important to get them in the game, but I don't see any reason to be against it.

oblivion >>>>>>>>>> fallout
Fallout 3 was a big disapointment for me. FPS Guns and dice rolls just dont go. Oblivion had better environments, combat choices, rpg elements, personalities and diversity. It also has more than 3 colours. I hope fallout new vegas will be more like oblivon otherwise it will fail. :(
