It's just a jump....to the left.

And then a step to the right~.
(Fixed btw)

Hmm, would be kinda cool to charge at a Bighorner wielding a riot shield and a razor blade.

I could see shields being used by melee guys for caesar's legion.
It could work with pistols and other one handed weapons too.
But I won't lose any sleep over whether or not they're in the game.

yeah, I'm with the protectron

Blocking is part of any hand to hand combat method that I know of. It can be done with a weapon, whether that is primary or secondary. It can also be done with an object such as a shield. I see no issue with this but I don't see the wide spread use of one either for most gamers. Does that mean that they should not be in the game?

Shields would prove to be an encumbrance in some or most forms of combat. A Riot Shield is not something you can use and really attack at the same time, and it will not block most bullets. A piece of metal big and strong enough to do that is heavy and unweildy. However that would provide the inherent balance. Say your accuracy goes down when the shield is being used, but you get some more protection and maybe the ability to block/deflect an attack using it. You could use the shield as an approach tactic much the same as some sneak up on an enemy but have to put it away to attack. When you put it away you no longer have any increased DR from it. It could work if implemented just right.

I don't think I would ever use one in this game. I did not use them in Oblivion or Morrowind except for the increase in Total DR they gave. Remember, just because the game offers you something to use, does not mean you have to use it.

Someone should have told the devs that

Also one handed spears were used by the Archaic and Classical Greeks in their phalanx formation. They all had Hoplan shields and very long spears, certainly not designed for throwing.

With your hands on your hips.

The spear, being one of the lighter pole arms, tended to be used by light and medium infantry. While there certainly were longer and heavier spears that were used with two hands, ie:Pike, Lance, etc. Most of the light.med infantry used the spear/sheild combo until mounted heavy cavalry caused the change to the longer pike, but some pikemen were shielded by their own shield dudes.

I don't know why everyone is all "Oblivion with guns", It uses the same engine, and many of the same mechanics. Hell it HAS melee weapons, that can't get much more oblivion than that. Add shields I say, it would add an interesting dynamic, and give melee a bit of an edge over ranged. I'm doubtful this will come in the vanilla package, but this makes me curious. Considering how similar Fallout is to Oblivion, how easy do you think it would be to mods shields back into the game?

@ CCNA: Agreed, exactly what I was thinking.

Oh look, the game has shields, It's definitely Oblivion now!

Point being, if it has shields, it doesn't make it oblivion, at all. Shields would actually be quite great in the Wasteland, as a directional protection object. You'd want a shield when you're being bashed with a sword in a close range battle. Besides, Caesar's Legion would fit perfectly using them, and have a some decent defense instead of just using football gear. Also, it'd be cool if the BoS used Riot shields or so :P

Its an interesting idea, but I dont think many people would like it, and as somebody else said, people would call it Oblivion with guns :( I could see why you would suggestt it, but a game with guns it's not that practical. I would also think it would be pretty useless in hardcoe mode becuase its so heavy and a hassle, but on the other hand it could be the most useful item in means of defence you have! :)

with melee weapons (a.k.a Sword and Shield)? Yes....
with guns (a.k.a SMG/Pistol and a Riot shield) No...

Why do you guys insist to tell Fallout is not a game for shields?
I know that it is not me who made this game, but it's post-acopalyptia.... There are many ways fro the wastelanders to survive......

One more thing, Fallout is not Oblivion with guns, it is Fallout obviously. I don't think Fallout is oblivion with guns..
Jeez, why there are people whot think Fallout is Oblivion with guns? (Sure it resembles Oblivion, and it's also the same developer/publisher as Oblivion, but THIS IS FAALLOOOUUUT!!! :fallout: ) (It's fallout, not oblivion with gun . SHIELDS ARE POSSIBLE)
I know Fallout 3 resembles Oblivion, but Fallout is Fallout, it's simple.
