Shields Give me more armor please

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 12:33 pm

Just wondering if anyone knows through the rumor mill about some kind of Defensive item you can carry in one hand rather then wear on your body.

It would absorb damage at the same time allow for only one handed weapons to be used with it. Perhaps one handed ranged weapons take a penalty on accuracy, and one handed melee weapons as well to balance out the extra bonus of more defense.

Different shield types could had different strength requirements.

Perhaps even when a shield is equipped you cant zoom in but rather you automatically get the chance to block an oncoming attack, just like oblivion blocking with the right mouse button, perhaps if your timing is right you increase you damage threshold with a successful block and if it you failed to block would you decease your damage threshold.

As for what kind or crazy shield here are some ideas,

Could be
a car door (yep like the Behemoth carried) from Elvis's gold plated Cadillac,
a trash can lid,
a hub cap,
a super mutant head,
a mirelurk or nukalurk shell shield that glows blue from the Nuka Cola Quantum
i giant piece of steel (if you had major strength to carry it)
a door from a fridge from the junk year,
or my second favorite a riot shield!
and my first favorite idea, get one from a random encounter!

i love melee and HTH but i miss not being able to pick up a shield

i miss my Sword and Board play style and wish it could be in FNV,

Thanks guys.

A shield seems very out of place in a game like Fallout.. as gabriel77dan said, it's just getting closer to Oblivion with guns.

This isn't Oblivion, shields do not belong in this game.

Who cares if it IS oblivion with guns???

I don't see why not. Even if it's not useful late game (who said it had to be) it could be handy early on.

Shields might work for Caesar's Legion but they should only be ceremonial and be largely pointless in actual combat.

then whats the point of having a shield then..

i personally think shield would be awesome in fallout! Just like they where in oblivion. And i guess in a post apocalyptic world i would carry one for sure. I mean who knows what kind of deceases those irradiated monsters contain? One bite and you may have something 10x worse than AIDS =)
A shield would be very useful and awesome if used at the same time with a melee weapon..or ONLY with a melee weapon..

The only practical use i can think of for a shield in this game is one like in Gears of War that you can hunker down behind and shoot from.

Hmm, Uncharted 2 had a "Riot Shield" which could be used to block small arms fire. It served sort of like a moveable cover using the game's cover system, so when you were aiming (and thus sticking your arm and head out to fire) you were vulnerable to return fire. You could only use handguns or submachine guns with it though and you could not keep it in your inventory so if you switched to a 2 handed weapon it would drop.

I'm not sure if it would work well with FONV since there is no cover system in this game...

oblivion >>>>>>>>>> fallout
Fallout 3 was a big disapointment for me. FPS Guns and dice rolls just dont go. Oblivion had better environments, combat choices, rpg elements, personalities and diversity. It also has more than 3 colours. I hope fallout new vegas will be more like oblivon otherwise it will fail. :(

I could see shields being used by melee guys for caesar's legion.
It could work with pistols and other one handed weapons too.
But I won't lose any sleep over whether or not they're in the game.

Better environments?
It was like: trees, grass, flowers, rocks and to the north was a patch of snow and to the east was a mountain and a liiiiiiiittle bit of swamp at the south eastern corner.
And each dungeon, cave, crypt, mine etc looked the same.

Combat choices.
Game == Unbalanced like crazy.

RPG elements.
No, not really. Almost every quest had one path, at least fallout had choices.
Personalities, god no, almsot everyone was the same.

Diversity?

If you like Oblivion more than Fallout 3 that's fine but it's environments were copy paste's, it's combat was clunky and unbalanced and almost every single quest was linear.

I wouldn't mind a shield of some sort. If someone would pick up something to use as a club I don't see what's stopping them from picking up a trash can lid to use for protection.

Your opinion. I thought Fallout 3 was much better than Oblivion. In fact, Oblivion is the only Bethesda game I've played that I can't stand without modding it to high heaven, and I've been playing Bethesda games since Arena was released in '94. The RPG elements you speak of were the worst part...100% botched in the vanilla version in my opinion. Opinions are opinions, though. Yours isn't right, and neither is mine. Oblivion is big and had fancy graphics for its time. That, in my opinion, is pretty much all it has going for it without mods.

I think it might be unnecessary
we should probably just stick to combat armor as is.

Its a cool idea with all the different objects you can use as shields, but, nah :nope:

Using some trash lids as shields could work with the game.Your character would try to use everything he can for survival so why not.I wouldn't really care about them though.I have no use for have shields,I usually stick with more damage than more protection.

I wouldn't mind some form of shield. Picking up a car door or something in the middle of combat to protect from bullet damage (or a melee attack) for a short time would actually be very awesome. Chances of it in the game are exactly 0% as the engine for Fallout 3 doesn't support any type of equipment on the left arm.
