skippin School Or work?

Post » Tue May 08, 2012 1:54 pm

I'm talking about the ones who purposefully call in sick to their school or work because a new computer game has been released. I bet in most cases it won't be the first time they do it and thus it creates a bad habit of missing out valuable learning or working time. And just because I don't agree with people doing it doesn't make me a troll so get your definitions right.

I know plenty of people who cut out of work early or call in sick to go golfing or head out early on their vacation. You act like this is a phenomenon linked to video games. Do you watch Fox news or something?

Really? You think skipping one day of school here and there means you will end up illiterate?

I think a lot of people skip school for all sorts of reasons and newly-released computer games is just one of them.

I skipped the odd day here and there - still ended up with a degree and I'm in a job I like which allows me 6 weeks paid annual leave (some of which I'll be using to play video games :P).

Congrats, you're an intelligent person. Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there not as fortunate as you are and maybe don't get the support they need to progress in life. I skipped school a lot back in the days, I have a degree and a job today too, so I consider myself lucky.

Still not sure if I have work on Friday or not, but if I do I won't be skipping it.

I planned it so I have a week to play before I start my new job and have to devote my life to that.

I'm just sat here waiting now!

Taking a half-day from work. Skyrim should be at the office by 1030am so I should be playing by 11am :)

No work Friday or Saturday, GF already knows not to speak to me unless requested to do so starting Friday 12:00 AM until further notice is issued in writing.

I don't have Fox News, so no, I don't.

It's not a new phenomenon, you're right, but it's more highlighted by the fact that people post gazillions of these threads every single time a brand-spanking new AAA title is being released. If you have the opportunity to go out golfing at random while you should be at your job I don't think it matters much to you what your job is, or you are in a position were nobody can tell you off for it.

I'm more concerned about those kids in secondary school or 6th form who miss out on important matters because a new game is released. Like I've mentioned earlier, it's probably not the first time they do it either and so it all adds up.

I'm not taking the day off school. For a start I'll never hear the end of it from my friends, but I don't wan't to miss any important lessons. However I am running my ass home as fast as possible. No unacceptable delays aloud.

Federal Holiday on Friday (Veteran's Day). So I don't need to be 'sick' or skip work. Even if I didn't have Friday off, I wouldn't skip work. It's a game. It will still be there on Friday evening or Saturday.

Wish I could but I would fail my class for the semester and college isn't cheap. My prof just had to put an exam on that day so Skyrim will just have to wait for me a little longer.

November 11 is a Stat Holiday (Remembrance Day) here so I have the day off. That's a bonus, otherwise I'd be at work as usual.

Fri. morning through Thur. night. As in, I work this Thur. night into Fri. morning, and go back the next Thur. night. Paid vacation. First acquire it, come home, take nap, wake up, go back out for food, come back and play.

I am using a personal holiday for Friday. And got another bonus last night: turns out my mother is coming to take the kids for the entire weekend, so it'll just be me, Skyrim, and my wife nagging to either A) get up and do something, or B) let her play too!

As for skipping school/work for a new release, I think it's definitely a matter of personal choice. I skipped school on Fridays often in college, but that was due to too much partying on Thursday (why bars made college night Thursday, I'll never know...). I would never outright 'skip' work for a game, but using PTO that I've accrued? Certainly.

I work from home, so I've decided to give myself Friday off, and possibly Monday as well. My wife is off work Friday, but she's into the Fallout games and eager to try out Skyrim. So I won't have to worry about my work or my wife keeping me away from Skyrim :celebration:
