I have played all three... and I have even played arena and dagger fall but didn't finish them:

Skyrim > Oblivion > Morrowind

IMO the people who say Morrowind was better need to re evaluate their life, they are most likely trying to be part of an club: "I played the original elder scrolls games, me expert you noob". Morrowind was good but Skyrim is much better. The modern engine is what is at the core of the game and it Skyrim it is simply superior. Other elder scrolls games felt dull when fighting.. slash, be slashed, slash again; In Skyrim the combat is very well put together and has a great feel.

Removing the spell creation was a good choice. It made the game tacky... for example you could speed up a horse to make it go super fast and it was just silly or create a spell to make you close to 100% invisibility (to which you could make it up to 100% buy an enchanted ring).

However Morrowind and Oblivion are VERY good games. But it may be hard to put up with a lesser engine when you have become used to Skyrim.

As for story and writing I think all games are evenly matched.

You DONT have to of played the previous games at all really. Most background literature has been transferred from previous games so you aren't really missing out on too much especially since you are in a new province.

Morrowind's combat is terrible, especially if you're coming from Skyrim.

I'm a die hard "Morrowind is the greatest game ever!" type, but I must admit you are 100% correct.

Even though I like the chance to hit combat mechanic in theory( makes sense to me that zero skill should equal zero chance to hit) Morrowind's implementation is atrocious. If you (OP) do decide to play Morrowind, I would suggest you get into a "grinding" mindset, pick 1 weapon, and 1 weapon only and plow through mudcrabs and other trash mobs for quite a while until you skill that weapon up a bit then actually start "playing" the game.

EDIT: Speaking of Mudcrabs. M'aiq the Liar will tell you about a drunken Mudcrab with lots of money. When/if you ever meet a Mudcrab that doesn't attack you, do NOT kill it. That's all I'm gonna say.

It really depends on your personal preference to a game. If seeing amazing graphics and awe-inspiring sights is your primary enjoyment... stick with Skyrim. If an in-depth story and the feeling of really getting caught up in role-playing experience is more your style, then Morrowind/Daggerfall is great. However, most new people can no longer stomach the decades old graphics anymore.

I personally wouldn't recommend Oblivion for any reason, but again that was just a personal disappointment for me. It was good for a couple weeks of entertainment, but even mods couldn't add any kind of depth to very shallow world.

You wouldn't really be missing much unless you're into spreadsheets over content.

The stories are nice in Morrowind and Oblivion though.

Just don't let anyone tell you, which is the best. They are all good. I think if you like Skyrim, you might give Oblivion and Morrowind a try, there are many overhauls out there that make both games even by today's standards really good. Just don't go for the vanilla (unmodded) games, since they both had some major flaws when they came out. Morrowind unmodded is not very nice to look at (and the viewdistance svcks). Oblivion has terrible dungeon-"design". Just to name two things.

For Morrowind I recommend to search for "Morrowind Overhaul 2.0", for Oblivion I can't really help, since I used a German overhaul. Nehrim though is a nice total conversion. If you are German by chance, just send me a pm, then I can help you with a pimped Oblivion.

So Morrowind was the best Elder Scrolls game...? I don't know much about that game, the only video I ever saw of it was earlier today and the video was of someone completing the game in less than 15 minutes, that seems a bit short?

It takes in-depth knowledge from years of playing Morrowind to do a 15 minutes speed play through....you have to be a grand master of the game to do that.
The game is very long and complex. It is a game that does not hold your hand and may seem crude and ugly and outdated....until or unless you 'get it'....then the world opens out into a brilliant RPG.

i love Skyrim, but i personally think Oblivion is a better game. It doesnt look quite as good but it is much more in depth and i also like the fact that you have to have a class. im not a fan of Skyrims classless system. Oblivion has a great story, and what you do makes people treat you differently to a large degree. Oblivion has everything skyrim has, but even more on top of that, You can really just "do alot more stuff" and you're not limited by one perk per level crap. Its really worth checking out. I would suggest the Game of the Year Edition, as it includes 2 great expansions to the game.

Morrowind and Oblivion are both worth playing and good in their own way. Each has a different feel but lots to explore. Lots of replayability and mods if you're on pc.
Once you're done with Skyrim, definitely check them out. Get the bundled versions with the expansions and you're all set.

I started with Daggerfall, so it holds that special place to me that Morrowind seems to for alot of people, I still get chills when I hear the snowing music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZ97I2p4_YY

In terms for looking back without nostalgia blinding me to reality, every new Bethesda open world RPG (including FO3) has been superior to it's predacessor. Although there are some aspects of Daggerfall (life-sized world scale) that I'd love to see make a comeback, I realize that's not possible in a modern world where everything is voice acted. At least, not unless they used some made up language like simlish for the characters... and I'm kind of dubious on that.

There isn't a TES game that I don't still consider worth playing.
I would say Oblivion is the worst/least good of the lot, but your mileage may vary. Regardless, both Oblivion and Morrowind are cheap enough to warrant a curiosity buy at least. You don't stand to lose much.

Meanwhile Arena and Daggerfall are free for anyone to try. Maybe it's hard for people to get into them nowadays, but they really are quite magnificent games.

Morrowind is a huge step down from Skyrim but mainly in gameplay then graphics in IMHO. I found Morrowind horrible combat pretty much unplayable when it first came out, and it only seems worse today after playing Skyrim and Oblivion. Oblivion on the otherhand is definitely worth a play through if you hadn't played it before. While gameplay wise its not up to skyrim, its still very playable and fun. Also the guild quest lines are superior to those in skyrim.
