Skyrim is my first Elder Scrolls game, am I missing out?

Is it worth buying oblivion? Alot of people are saying it is better than Skyrim, but I love Skyrim and havn't even started to get bored of it yet.

Oblivion is not better than Skyrim. It is debatable that Morrowind is better though.

In my honest opinion, Oblivion is better than Morrowind, Skyrim is better than Oblivion. Each game has been an update on the last.

Play Skyrim to death first. If you go from Skyrim to Morrowind straight away, you'll struggle to get past the graphical advantage Skyrim has. Play this to death, leave it, then after a while get Oblivion. If you love that too, go further back and play Morrowind.

Morrowind and later are all worth playing even now. Daggerfall was great in its day, but really not playable at this point in the history of gaming. So, svcks that you missed out on it, but don't go back.

So Morrowind was the best Elder Scrolls game...? I don't know much about that game, the only video I ever saw of it was earlier today and the video was of someone completing the game in less than 15 minutes, that seems a bit short?

Skyrim is an incredible game, but for me Morrowind so far is the best TES game. Better than Oblivion, but thats not saying Oblivion isnt any good, it is.
Although I am no-where near completing Skyrim so my opinion may change.
If you enjoy playing Skyrim, I would strongly reccommend you playing Morrowind and Oblivion.

Morrowind,
Skyrim,
Oblivion.

Oblivion may or may not be better than skyrim, it is however an excelent game in its own right an well worth a play. The graphics in vanilla shows its age but don't let that put you off.

Skyrim is my first TES game too and all I did was watch a complete Oblivion playthrough on youtube to get up to speed.

No need to play an older version of a better game.

I am pretty sure it is all debatable

if you do try Oblivion you need to do the dark brotherhood quest line, its one of the best things in the entire game

Very good point. Morrowind is awesome, but you'll be disappointed graphically.

I'm with those who hold the order of 'good' in TES as MW, OB and now Skyrim as the best. Those who are mostly concerned with a very long drawn out complex quest still hold for MW, though. The main quest in MW got so silly and full of political pvssyr, that I gave it up dropping the game entirely. BTW, the MW expansion, Bloodmoon, was excellent and IMO, better than the main game by far.

I'd say if you like Skyrim, you'll also like OB but not necessarily MW.

I started with Oblivion, and found I could not go back to Morrowind because the graphical and gameplay difference was too large. I think you would probably have the same problem going back from Skyrim to Oblivion. It's still a good game, so if you don't mind an older style then it is worth it to go back. Be sure to buy a package with the DLC. Shivering Isles is probably better than the rest of Oblivion combined.

If you listen to the infinite [censored] of the game who basically rate every TES title ever on how many features of Morrowind it includes, then yes. I haven't played it, so I can't say either way, but please god don't decide it's the ebst game in the history of Bethesda's works just because people tell you it is with unlimited zeal. Go and play it, and work it out for yourself. :)

By today's standard Morrowind is unplayable. It is still my favorite game ever, and I managed to 'finish' a playthrough before Skyrim's release... on the XBox 360 no less!!

However I wouldnt recommend it, unless you dont mind aged gameplay (and graphics, unless you mod the PC version). And, imo, Oblivion certainly isnt better then Skyrim. Much less interesting setting and a horrible gameplay balance. Not that it is a bad game, you definatly could check it out after youre done with Skyrim, but dont expect too much from it.

Perhaps, but Skyrim and Oblivion are within the same generation. The difference between them isnt as grand as Morrowind compared Oblivion it. For example both are spoken dialogue, a large view distance, real time combat and the questmarker. These are some fundamental differences that made Oblivion appealing to an audience that compleetly ignored Morrowind. Skryrim is aimed at the same market, so Oblivion is still very much playable by those that like Skyrim.

What is nice about Morrowind is that you can upgrade a lot of the graphics with mods, and you can play it on a cheap netbook (you can make a legit disc image from your disc and mount it without any problems too). That makes it nice for when you are traveling or whatever and just have your netbook.

In Morrowind, you need to do quite a bit of in-game reading to understand the plot, though.

Oblivion's flaws. Most can probably be fixed by mods if youre on PC.

1. Broken Levelling System: Unlike Skyrim you have to set your character up exactly opposite of how you want him to play. For e.g.: In order to make a powerful, 2-handed wielding, heavy armour wearing warrior that never uses magic you need to select restoration, destruction and only other magic skills as your major skills in order to make your melee abilities stronger.

2. Terrible Voice acting: There are only 3 or 4 voice actors in the entire game and none of them could VoiceAct if their lives depended on it.

3. Ugly Faces: Every single character in the game is hideous, sporting bulbous and malformed faces.

4. The Main Quest is Tedious: Just walk from city to city shutting down the same 7-8 oblivion gates. At a point in the game hundreds open up all over Cyrodil and its up to you to shut them all down!! Unfortunately the plains of oblivion, despite being a vast and incomprehensible, lava-ravaged hellscape that defies human logic, is a terribly repetitive place filled with identical copies of the same fortresses, towers and rock spires..

Despite all the flaws I still enjoyed the unmodded GOTY edition on my PS3. So its still pretty fun. Oh and the vampires in Obv are slightly better than the vampires in Skyrim. They get decent Strength bonuses.

In my opinion Morrowind has gorgeous lore, bad graphics and absolutely [censored]e combat. The graphics don't bother me, but the combat ruins the entire experience.
Oblivion fixed the key flaw, and gave some nice eye candy. The world was a little less fleshed out but it seemed like a fair exchange.
Skyrim takes out quite a few features from Oblivion, but otherwise feels the same. Again, graphics and combat slightly improved.

I think Oblivion is the best.

You do not need to play prior Elder Scrolls games as the stories are not a continuation of each other.

I would say play Skyrim first. If you love the game then read up on Oblivion and Morrowind and see if you want to sink in 100's of hours into those games as well.

Now, if you are on a budget and are tempted to get Oblivion or Morrowind first then I recommend getting them on PC because you will need mods to get graphics updated and bugs fixed but also some really cook additions to the game that exist in Skyrim (Bethesda has taken a lot of popular mods from prior games and put them in Skyrim). Oblivion would probably be your best bet as it is the most accessible to the series, but over all it is a little bland.

I like all 3 games but Skyrim has been the best one for me to be one type of character and really get lost in the game without worry about juggling the right attritubutes increases the right amount of times before leveling up.
