Skyrim Media Reviews

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 4:06 am

I am not questioning the greatness of Skyrim but how does a game get so many perfect score with so many negative comments about a major aspect of it, which is the clunkiness of Combat? From all the videos I have seen, combat, expecially melee, looks very boring.
I've always enjoyed the combat, so I really don't know what people are [censored]ing about.

I've played it, and it tottally deserves the scores it's getting, in my experiencce, the best TES game I've ever played ( started with MW).
It's not like Oblivion 2.0 as I feared, It's like the witcher 2 had a baby with Morrowind.

DTOID's video review had reservations about archery, but I'm pretty sure they just failed to invest in perks for archery properly. I expect you really need zoom and slow-mo to be a very effective archer against some of the harder enemies later in the game.

real combat is clunky. It's not Ninja Gaiden combo based hack n slash, which is spoiling much of the combat systems these days.

People say nothing bad about ridiculous attack strings, but they ignorantly criticize a combat system that involves as much defense and positioning, besides offense. People will criticize the combat no matter what unless it's something mainstream like Marvel vs. Capcom dial-a-combos.

Even though those arcadey combos look smooth, they are not natural and don't fit in TES world. of course combat can be made more realistic, but Skyrim already has a fitting combat system that works and it sure beats the DoT point and spam nature of Diablo games.

?

Going through 7 or so reviews, here's the general rundown on combat:

Melee- Slightly improved, greatly improved in 3rd person
Archery- Vastly Improved
Magic- Vastly Improved

This is probably the first game I've ever seen that doesn't have a single review below 90%. Congrats Bethesda!!!

Yep. I'm not commenting on the validity of that 8.7 or what ever it is, just the fact that only one with dozens of reviews out is a pretty incredible feat.

Ah! If these critic scores are entirely truthful, I can see Skyrim being a big contender for GOTY - possibly even proving a match for Arkham City.

This is all great news!

Im not saying that skyrim is a bad game but most of those sites have to give games from bethesda a good score no matter what. Sometimes they are even paid to do so.
And how do you know that, huh? are you a chief executive officer or something? How do you know they pay the reviewers off? and that Bethesda has to get a good score "no matter what".

You're very biased. Of course Skyrim looks good and I'm sure It'll work out, but there is still no way around the fact that TW2 is on a much higher technical standard. And it's certainly not "any generic world". If you pay attention to little details like waystones, posters, etc you'll see that a lot of love for detail went into Witcher 2. And not just the world, also the character and monster designs are great and creative. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UQSaOgLiVh0/TV7TaiEJcNI/AAAAAAAAAQw/q-jcVvkWe2M/s1600/ME0001367810_2.jpg Just awesome.

Edit: Kinda disappointed that it's a 9.5 and not a 10 :sadvaultboy: I expected more from GI.
