Smart Souls
Teaching petty souls the meaning of the word 'Hog'
version 4.0

Requires Skyrim Script Extender 1.4.10

Download : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2584752/Smart%20Souls.dll

Description

This mod knocks some sense into the souls of the various denizens of Skyrim, keeping them from entering soul gems that aren't of the same level/quality as they are. Also displays the quality of the soul being captured. And prevents black soul gems from providing refuge to white souls.

PS: Dragon souls aren't covered by this mod as they are too far gone to be rehabilitated.

Fine Print

Just pop it in your 'Data\SKSE\Plugins' folder and run the game through the SKSE launcher. The INI file will be created on first-run, in the same folder as the plugin.

Compatibility

Compatible only with TES Skyrim v1.4.21.0. May not be compatible with the Russian build of the game.

So... what does this actually do? The system in the default game already has souls go straight to the lowest soul gem that they'll fit in. What else should change? Did you make it so there won't be multiple "Soul Gem (Petty)" entries in the inventory or something?

I'm pretty sure that it already does put it in the lowest gem that fits. >.>

Any chance that this mod makes it so that if you don't have the appropriate soul gem the soul is lost? I hate having petty souls fill up grand soul gems.

 An hour and a half down the drain. Serves me right for not taking a closer look at the code :sadvaultboy:

I started off with that, heh. The irony... I'll revert it back to that revision.

Are you sure??? I have plenty of grand soul gems that when i destroyed something pretty high level, did NOT go into my grand soul gem so im kinda confused. I have the problem NullCascade has basically petty souls filling up big soul gems.

Yeah, looks like it but the behaviour that you describe should be fixed by the plugin.

This has to be the funniest release thread I've seen. Should help things out a bunch, thanks for the relz ShadeMe. Any particular reason its not on nexus/tes though? Dropbox is convenient for a quick download, but will keep your mod from being able to be found via search.

I know the Perk Points plugin for SKSE stopped to work with the latest version of SKSE. Maybe it is the same with this one? The Container Categorization is still working though.

If you wanted to extend upon soul functionality, you could try:

a) Make gems of the same type collapse down instead of creating a long list of duplicates

B) Pack smaller souls into the larger soul gems til it all fills up, instead of having to cap a right-size soul (because, let's face it, there are truly bugger all common/greater/soul creatures to actually pack into them)

This plugin doesn't work with the latest patch (1.2). I'm gonna keep it that way until we get something stable from Beth.

#2 sounds interesting. And is definitely not in the vanilla game; I'll take a look. #1, on the other hand, is not easily done. Would involve a significant amount of patching, given how the inventory/container system works (seems to be fairly similar to Oblivion).

@shadowchao: No particular reason - I merely wanted to get the plugin out quickly. I'll eventually create a page for it on the Nexus.

Take a look at http://tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=35393. It's an OBSE-based mod which does exactly those two things in Oblivion.

For #1, it does it in a fairly simple way: When you fill a soul gem, it removes the player-filled gem and replaces it with an identical pre-filled gem (like the ones you buy from merchants). Net result is that a Petty Soul Gem (Petty) has the same value regardless of whether it was full or empty when you obtained it and it will stack with all other Petty Soul Gem (Petty)s you might have.

Of course, without TESVCS and a version of SKSE that adds script commands for examining soul gem contents, you can't just port Soulgem Magic and things do get a lot more complicated...

Why not go the simple route and say for X (empty or filled) Petty Soul Gem in your inventory creates 1 grand soul gem.
You pretty much get the idea for all the different levels of soul gems.

Thanks for this interesting work shadeMe, thats definitely useful idea.
BTW
Well, does SKSE scripting will allow named soul gems?
Can it be enhanced with plugin also?
If I remember well there was possibility change name of item with OBSE scripts.

uhh..Your recommending a different antivirus because norton blocked a possible threat?
Tbh I kind of expected this since the internet hates norton for some reason.
