Super Castlevania 4

Just thought of this and see someone posted it.

Game is awesome.

You know - I get more game time out of my NES and SNES than I do out of my Wii, 360, or even PC.

Battletoads.

If you're going to get Battletoads you have to get Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time.

Have to agree that TMNT: Turtles In Time for the SNES is great. They ported it to the PS3 on the sony store, but I hear it's not as robust or as fun as the original game.

Some that haven't been mentioned:
Actraiser
Blackthorne
The Lost Vikings
Kirby's Dream Land 3
Tetris & Dr. Mario

Have to agree that TMNT: Turtles In Time for the SNES is great. They ported it to the PS3 on the sony store, but I hear it's not as robust or as fun as the original game.
That's because they remade it in 3D rather doing what everyone would have preferred and porting the arcade version.

FF2 (5)
FF3 (6)
Illusion of Gaia
Terrangama (if you have a super famicom)
Sieken Dentsu III (again, famicom)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FC_Twin
(please don't mod me! I don't want him to EMU!!)

Edit: Oh yeah and every other game listed, so far.
Other than Toads, or Turtles. IMO you'd only enjoy either one of those if you played them when you were a kid.

Terrangama (if you have a super famicom)

If you're willing to spend the money on it. I too would recommend this.(No NTSC versions, you'll need a PAL famicom as stated above)

as most others have said:
Chrono Trigger: probably my favorite RPG of all time still to this day. epic story with great replay value (you have to beat it new game + to unlock every ending) and some of the best music in a game of that era.
Super Mario RPG: if you're a fan of the mario series in general this is a fun romp with many memorable moments and some cheeky humor and challenging secret enemies
Earthbound: I remember it being a great game, though i haven't played it since it first came out i don't remember a ton. lots of goofy characters and light hearted action
Final Fantasy III US (VI in proper order): still one of my favorite games. wonderfully evil main villain. lots of different back stories that you can choose to follow or not follow, can really customize what magic your team learns and fantastic music
Final Fantasy II US (IV in proper order): bit of a cheesy story and out there at some points. but fun gameplay and decent characters with the first incarnation of Active Time Battle that we all grew to love (and then hate)
Illusions of Gaia: fun action rpg from what i remember with a few challenging bosses

since i remembered after posting you weren't just looking for RPGs here are a few others i loved back in the day
Megaman X series. first game is the best megaman games of all time (in my opinion) X2 and X3 were quite challenging and fun too!
Zelda: a link to the past - great zelda game with hours of fun
Donkey Kong Country 1-3 - great platform games with fun puzzles and quirky themes
Lost Vikings - oddly fun puzzle style platform game
earthworm jim - another fun weird platformer
supermario kart - two player circuit racing makes for a lot of anger... though tough to play battle or vs mode with the improvements MK64 introduced

okay so far the repeat offenders () are:

Chrono Trigger
Earthbound
Super Mario RPG
Final Fantasy 4 and 6
Battletoads and/or TMNT: Turtles in Time
Shadowrun
Earthworm Jim
Kirby

and a few games that have caught my attention regardless of repetition
Sunset Riders: (ZOMGBBQSUACE R U SIRUS!? DER'S A SUNSET RIDERS GAME ON SNES?????? I LURVED SUNSET RIDERS IN ARCADE, IT WAS MAH FIRST VIDEA-GHAM I SPENT A SMALL FORTUNE ON THAT GAME and never did beat it :( )

Seventh Saga: I like the sounds of this, sounds pretty ahead of its time, and I assume with the character selection that there're a variety of classes to choose from as well (even if there aren't it still sounds like a great game to check out)

The Lost Vikings: I've actually heard of this game, it looks interesting. it reminds me of an old GBA game I got for my birthday when I was a kid.

If you could find one for cheap, I think you should. Playing old games can be a blast if you get bored of the modern games.

The different characters are the different classes. Kamil's an allrounder. Valsu is a healer/priest type. Wilme is a berserker. Olvan is a Fighter. Lejes is a dark magic user. Esuna is a lighter magic user. The Tetujin is a sort of unique magic + fighter.

Little bit of an intro here

Just fair warning here. There's a reason people tend to call this one of the hardest games they've played. Apparently the japanese version was oddly enough easier, which was odd for its time.

Nah, you could just buy the games on the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console instead, which is easier than to hunt down game cartridges and also give you better image quality on the TV thanks to Component video cables as older consoles tend to give a fairly blurry image on a modern flat screen.

I do find it very unfortunate http://gizmodo.com/380572/snes-controller-for-wii-unboxed-looks-incredibly-authentic was never released for sale though. I really wish there was a good classic controller for the Wii that is wired and connected to the USB port instead of draining the battery of the Wiimote.

With a game selection that's absolutely pitiful and doesn't even touch some of the best games on the system.

My answer would be - 'if you want to'.

If you want to experience one of the better console systems to date, go for it. Just accept it for what it is, though, a very outdated system. It's got some amazing games, though. Personally - I still find the NES library a tad better. If I had to choose one system to play for the rest of my life, it would be the NES.

Even though it might sound totally lame, get the Disney Aladin game. I absolutely love that game and can still remember a pass code to send me right off into the genie's lamp levels. It's actually pretty long, and a lot of fun. That was when Movies had actaully decent video games. lso the lion king and jungle book ones were brilliant.

This thread has made me incredibly nostalgic. I've still got my old SNES and Mega Drive (Genesis) with tons of games for each. Time to dig them out for a retro gaming extravaganza, I reckon...

so a few months ago I picked up an SNES for a very cheap price in a hole-in-the-wall game store.

I have three games for it so far:

Donkey Kong Country
Star Fox
Super Mario All Stars + Super Mario World

I'm on the lookout for:
Yoshi's Island
DKC II
A Link to the Past
Super Star Wars series
Earthbound
Super Mario RPG

What are some other SNES games you guys would recommend me?

I like RPGs, and I know there're a ton of Japanese RPGs on the SNES, which ordinarily aren't my thing, but given their prevalence and popularity I'm willing to give them a shot. If there are any good RPGs that have a more western design, IE: you can pick your class, have a bit more freedom of choice in play-style, I'd love to know about them.

I mention the "on the lookout for" because I know those're games that are popular and/or I already want so no one has to mention those.

I'm pretty much open to any SNES games that people regard as good.

and I suppose this can be a thread dedicated to SNES nostalgia for anyone who's interested

thanks

Pocky and Rocky and its sequel are quite good and very underrated. With a name like that its no wonder, really. Also try Act Raiser, Blackthorne, Flashback, and EVO search for Eden. As for RPGs, the turn based combat of most of those old snes titles are completely stale and unplayable for me these days. Id much prefer to spend my time with ones that have a bit of action to them like Secret of Evermore and Secret of Mana. Also for a western RPG I suggest Shadowrun, that game is really great.

Please review the forum rules and avoid topics related to - potentially - piracy. That would include discussion of emulators. I'm leaving this open so suggestions can be made to the OP.
For clarity's sake, it is perfectly legal to use an emulator (or even ROMs) if you have the official game. I emulate PS2 games on my PC too, but I use the original DVD, which means it's completely legal. Just so there's no misunderstandings

For SNES, I'll recommend the obvious ones:

Final Fantasy VI - turn-based jRPG
Terranigma - action RPG
Secret of Evermore and Secret of Mana
Super Metroid (Y U no been mentioned yet by more than one person?!)
Super Mario Kart, it's great fun!
Chrono Trigger, obviously
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, obviously
U.N. Squadron is also a fun side-scrolling shooter that didn't get the recognition it deserved.

I would love to play the Fire Emblem series, see what they're like, but they were only released in japanese, AFAIK :(
