SNES Recommendations

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 10:32 pm

so a few months ago I picked up an SNES for a very cheap price in a hole-in-the-wall game store.

I have three games for it so far:

Donkey Kong Country
Star Fox
Super Mario All Stars + Super Mario World

I'm on the lookout for:
Yoshi's Island
DKC II
A Link to the Past
Super Star Wars series
Earthbound
Super Mario RPG

What are some other SNES games you guys would recommend me?

I like RPGs, and I know there're a ton of Japanese RPGs on the SNES, which ordinarily aren't my thing, but given their prevalence and popularity I'm willing to give them a shot. If there are any good RPGs that have a more western design, IE: you can pick your class, have a bit more freedom of choice in play-style, I'd love to know about them.

I mention the "on the lookout for" because I know those're games that are popular and/or I already want so no one has to mention those.

I'm pretty much open to any SNES games that people regard as good.

and I suppose this can be a thread dedicated to SNES nostalgia for anyone who's interested

thanks

Super Mario RPG and Brave Fencer Mushashi. These two were by far my favorite SNES games, and they have pretty good difficulty to keep you busy for awhile.

Earthbound for sure - but it'll cost you.

When I bought it, it went for around $70. Now it's $150-$180ish.

Please review the forum rules and avoid topics related to - potentially - piracy. That would include discussion of emulators. I'm leaving this open so suggestions can be made to the OP.

Earthworm Jim 1 & 2
Kirby Superstar
Lufia II
Megaman X1-3
Ogre Battle
Out of this World
Super Metroid

If you can stand the jRPGness enough

Final Fantasy II and III are also good.

The 7th Saga lets you pick from a bunch of different starter characters.(Among the list is an elf, a few humans, a dwarf, an alien, a demon, and a robot) Each are specialists at different things. The ones you don't pick will be your rivals in the game and can achieve objectives before you if you take too long.(At which point you have to hunt them down and beat the crap out of them) By random chance they may decide to join you too. The game is extremely difficult though. This is one of the more grindy RPGs out there. And the second half of the game can be pretty much impossible if you didn't prepare enough.

Super Ghouls and Ghosts(warning, not an easy game).

Top Gear 2(best racing game ever!)

And of course, the SNES version of Link to the Past.

Chrono Trigger is one of the few JRPGs I like. The combat system is nice, and I like that there are no random encounters, just scripted ones which can be avoided if you're clever (often you can see the monsters walking around, and if you avoid them you can avoid the fight). Nice story and soundtrack, too.

Megaman X, Megaman X2, and Megaman x3 are all terrific games having a great amount of difficulty. It's pretty dumb, but Aliens vs Predator for the SNES is a decent beat'em up style arcade game. After that Killer Instinct is pretty good having the original combatants.

One game I will tell you right now to ABSOLUTELY STAY AWAY FROM is Shaq-fu. I mistakenly plopped down like $40 when it came out and it was the worst mistake I made. It's just a kung-fu game with Shaq in it with a horrible story and plot meant to sell a product.

Would recommend Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The Seven Stars, though I see you already have that listed. ;)

I'd recommend Tales of Phantasia, but I don't think the SNES version (or PSX for that matter) was ever localized.

There was a Shaq Fu RPG a few years back as well, I don't think it was ever finished though.
