Social Media

Because as a lower-40's male, I'm clearly a "hipster teenager" trying to act cool and edgy.

No, rather, I'm just a person from before all this texting/tweeting/"socialmedia"/"friending"/smartphone crap, who never really sat around talking on the phone for kicks or socialized with anything above small groups.

Not everyone is an outgoing extrovert who feels the need to connect with large numbers of people. Or to try to gain some sense of self-worth or importance by how many "friends" are recorded in some database.

My grandma has facebook, only friends with family and close friends.

I have a Facebook account. I usually login once a day, skim through the recent updates for anything interesting, then logout. Normally takes about five minutes. Once in a while I'll actually post a comment, or a link, but only if I feel it's worthwhile and I can be bothered (numerous times I've been halfway through a post and then just given up and deleted it).

OK, for the handful of friends that I've got, if I want to know what's going on with them, I go and talk to them, face-to-face or contact them directly. Shocking concept, I know. :shocking:
That's such a stupid argument, I have friends and family around the world, am I meant to fly over there every time I want to talk to them? Or perhaps spend huge amounts of money on phoning them or wait weeks for a letter to reach them? Or maybe I could use this free website that everyone uses.

This. I don't know why so many people forfeit a useful tool just so they can seem cool and edgy for not using something popular.
Useful maybe to you but completely pointless to me.

You can send a telegraph it's much faster than mail.

EDIT: Or switch phone companies or use a calling card.

Facebook because, y'know, I have friends.
Facebook so I can stalk people I want to be friends with :(

I have 184 friends on Facebook.
274. Come at me bro.

I actually have got into Twitter recently too. Like others have said, I generally use twitter/facebook for finding out information/learning about things I'm interested in. It's a useful thing facebook have done recently where they tailor your newsfeed to people you actually give a [censored] about, so I don't have to read annoying people I never see anymore's inane facebook update. Twitter I just don't follow idiots and I find about 50% of the stuff on there cool/informative which is a better ratio than pretty much anywhere else on the internet.

Why do so many people assume that the only purpose for social media is to become obsessed with it? That's like assuming the only reason to drink alcohol is to become an alcoholic. I agree that the enthrallment with it at the moment is over-the-top, but there's nothing wrong with wanting to post a comment about something and have your friends ruthlessly degrade you for it. It can be an entertaining distraction to casually exchange insults with horrible people you love but happen to live on the other side of the country. Most of the anti-social-media comments I'm seeing in this thread are logical fallacies that I can only assume are based on negative stereotypes.

Yes, because I'm a normal human being and not a hipster teenager who eschews such things to act cool.

I'm an old Luddite.

I use Facebook for 2 reasons only: To share internet videos, pictures, and text with my brother, and to manipulate and bring down most of the women that I know.

I really would like to stop using Facebook, but I don't put much of my real information on there anyways, and... yeah.

A few years ago I had a twitter account, but I didn't use my real name and didn't really give out any personal information other than random thoughts or sharing cool things. I had a YouTube account that was really popular, with like 20k+ subs, but I gave both of those up.

As far as Facebook or other things like that, I have no interest in them. Not only do I not have enough friends to make proper use of them, but I enjoy my privacy, and have no desire to be posting my real name, picture, and other information where people can cyber-stalk me. It just makes me uncomfortable, and I don't see why people are doing it so much. I often use other people's accounts to access certain games or other media where a real name or personal information is required (unless it's just info to buy something, or something like that, but if the info shows up to the public, I avoid it.)

If I get to be close friends with someone and I trust them, I'll tell them my real name and other personal information, but until then, I'll stick with usernames and avatars. Hell, usernames and avatars are part of the fun of the internet, if you ask me.

I use Facebook. Not much of an explanation needed beyond that, to me atleast.

It's like saying I use Google, or I have an Xbox, but some people blow it way out of proportion.

I use facebook to keep up with friends who I no longer see for various reasons.

I use Twitter as a personalised news feed and nothing more.
