When I listen to it, I feel like I'm in the 90s again, and listening to Nine Inch Nails or Garbage for the first time. It feels awesome. Finally, music that means something, again. I've been despairing for four or five years now...

This album blew me away the first time I heard it. I did not see the movie until years later, but it is worth watching too.

Think this may be one of my favorite songs of all time. Robin Pecknold is such an amazing singer and songwriter (yes I know this song is a rendition rather than an orginal composition) and this song is just so etheral and generally just bloody brilliant.

For me it's one ofhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INiITvrKIIc&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRfBqoGVFXc&feature=related

I'm going to form my own form of metal: Metal Metal. I will bash different forms of metal against eachother to make a nice tune.

It's silly because the only good one is black metal

anyway metal isn't the only genre with a ridiculous amount of subgenres . ;)

Panis Angleicus by Josh Groban, Pavaratti and Andre Broclii (I'm not sure if that's how you spell it. I have this song on my phone three times one by each of the listed singers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZ-hkcl429c. The song is amazing, especially at 2:05 to the end. The words just stand out. They're so simple, but have an emotional quality to them, it's impressive.

So, what songs do this for you all? Songs that seem to permeate to your very soul?

You want songs that haunt. Well I'll try my best. Most of these, I'll admit, I'm choosing simply because they put me in a partiular mood when I listen to them. They're not all sad, or slow, or creepy, or strange, and my feelings attached to them are prorpietary. Take from it what you will.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmSjrr0XQNw, from Clannad. This is the only song on the list I refuse to listen to simply because of what it does to me. It does not evoke happy memories.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaUlezEzb1g, from Toonami Deep Space Bass.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7BclNjzy6k, from Valkyria Chronicles.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8kuZhFa1NA, from Sora no Woto.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYQ7wxIAtL4&feature=related, from Kara no Kyoukai.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqkKNWNpoZk, from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUCarSXpLm8&feature=related, from Paprika.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mT_9hAI_NlM, from ARIA the Origination.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NsOMA8P_wg8, from Shigofumi.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJNTIZOB1Vs&feature=related, from the rebuilds of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_Hujx7uxqE, from Treasure Planet.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFhd8RfCqVg, from The Secret of Kells.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-SBNgu1hO4&feature=related and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tJ7LGGpoZU, from Doctor Who.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sf0tYs5U5RI, by Not A Clever Pony.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUaNm9DJDJk, from Blue Submarine No. 6.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxjNWEQL9MQ, from .hack//SIGN.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwzMGm0o5To, from Katawa Shoujo. (If you ever played it you'd understand)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ugkzspe4y0, from Tenchi Muyo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTpP0ftoIc8, from Halo 2.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5KOERF_akc, from How To Train Your Dragon.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hpnAL5ApksM, by Stan Rogers.
http://youtu.be/fjqN4maS_ms, by WoodenToaster.

There's also one final song I'd like to mention. Now this one doesn't quite fit any criteria for "haunting", but when it comes to "permeates my very soul" well...you can't really hit it on the nose any better than http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrXslgFa_wc.

Huh, I didn't expect anyone really know that song. I find it moving too, especially the guitar solo that starts near 5:20.

Another moving song for me is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SpwK3vFGJp0. Granted, that is the SNL skit where it became popular, but then again, the actual music video is a lot more http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VVmbhYKDKfU.

Man, I was obsessed with .hack// back then. especially the first four PS2 games. I never got to finish Quarantine, but still an amazing series (except Skeith was a jerk). Also really liked Legend of the Twilight.

They've got a new http://andriasang.com/con0dt/hack_vs_pics/ coming out on PS3 and it looks gorgeous. Hopefully they also have a normal game in the works using that engine.

Heck yeah Sora no Woto soundtrack!

Bakemonogatari has some goodies but I can't find them on YouTube. Lots of minimalist stuff. Some a bit creepy.

A lot of music really. A lot of stuff that's attached to memories and such (a couple of songs by Paramore, A Day to Remember, Avenged Sevenfold etc).

But for music that is just haunting, prima fache, I'd have to say bands like Nightwish, Within Temptation and To Paint the Sky create the more haunting rock jaunts :)
