SOPA 'shelved' until consensus is found

Post » Sun May 13, 2012 9:58 am

Oh god the irony. Finding an "illiegal" or not suppoed to be avalible way around the blackout of wiki is just hillarious. I know I've been using wiki all day, though I suppose I'm already in the know enough to be against SOPA, PIPA, and any other crap of this kind. It wasn't too long ago in Canada we were having the big telecom companies push through some [censored] regulations to try and meter our internet. I beleive we've put a stop to that though, but now there's these new bills. Always SOMETHING! I swear, it's never ending with corporations.
I'm highly confused about this post.

Adblock isn't illegal, blocking page forwarding.. how is that illegal? Just to note I always adblock their near monthly donation annoyance. I guess that's illegal too?

Secondly, Bell, Rogers, Telus, Videotron, they all pretty much meter internet and have for a while now -- Videotron for around a decade. Where you got this "we've put a stop to it" when I look at my Bell e-bill and see the opposite is beyond me.

Neither of these have anything to do with SOPA, however, and politicians that get money from this industry seem intent on passing it regardless of what their constituents think.

No, they purposely made it easy to circumvent the blackout.

In doing so, they also highlight how easy it is to have your IP blocked as well.

Of course, even having your IP blocked still isn't foolproof. This legislation is a war of escalation, one that governments have no hope of winning. The internet just gets bigger guns.

Ahhh.... how the lead of information is poisoning our watersources of government.

All wikis on the Wikia network are run by their own communities. Wikia staff rarely makes decisions for one single wiki, so I'd imagine it was just the guys on the TES Wiki that decided to blackout today.

Does that mean SOPA is away, or can I keep working on my new Papanet to replace this Internet?
Keep working on Papanet. We'll need it in the sequel: SOPA Episode II: Big Business Strikes Back.

but but but... I nearly have a model of a new internet working in my basemant...

..and it has all the best tech built into it too.. :(

tin cans, string, and.. and, it works!

Great. a whole weekend's afternoon of work I'll never get back.
Keep it around. Patent it. Sell it. Then, everybody can have their very own internet, all thanks to Old Andy (aka Loquacious of Borg). Even Steve Jobs didn't accomplish that!

What?! There's intelligent life in the government?! :cold:
No, there isn't. They're just trying to lull us into a false sense of security. Trust me, SOPA will return. Only next time, they'll try to fly it in under the radar. We must remain vigilant! The Death Eaters SOPA supporters will not abandon their Dark Lord quest.

I mean illiegal as in it would be frowned upon. Sorry, I was just being lazy and not thinking of a better word.

You have OBVIOUSLY been living under some kind of rock or something if you havent heard of Canadas stop the meter. This is the website used to rally Canadians (usually an impossible task given our slack nature). We technically have metered internet now, but this was metered internet on crack. 50-60 gigs or less per month. After that they would start to pay you per gig ect. Thankfully it's been stopped, because that would have been bad. http://stopthemeter.ca/ My post was kind of relevant to the whole idea of internet protection, and keeping it safe from people/corporations who would like to be in complete control of it.

Edit
Because of the success of the petition openmedia.ca is an actual thing now that reguarily watches for suspect bills and alerts those on their email list. Here's a video they helped to release, though how extensive they were involved in it I have no idea. http://vimeo.com/29263468 http://vimeo.com/29262998 http://vimeo.com/29262823

Done. Shared on facebook as well, along with that quote from TotalBiscuit that was linked earlier in the thread.

What's a wikiperia?

And we know that, seeing as the majority of this thread is about that.

Anyone know enough about the OPEN Act, an alternative to SOPA/PIPA, to have opinions on it?

My personal favorites
Wikipedia is closed because the web is censored in China, Iran, Syria, North Korea, etc ?
If Wikipedia gets shut down.. It's all Obama's fault and that's gay as hell

There are more, on twitter look for herpderpedia, cant link due to language. But I truely fear for when these people are voters and manage to breed.

Yeah, I think I'll dye my napkin black and then tear it in protest.

Seriously. People like Caligula, Napoleon or Pelagius the 3rd have been up to silly [censored] all the time, and it's only sad that United States congressmen have delusions of grandeur that big to think they can dictate freedom of speech.

So is SOPA basically gonna turn the internet into a police state, kinda like East Germany after the war?

Inspired in the sense that people have a chance to change the way thier country operates, but I am utterly disgusted by how the goverment in Syria operates and the heavy hand they have used to crush rebellion.

My apologies for your troubles, I did not mean to poke fun but was rather only trying to offer hope that things will get better.

There is the potential to, and that alone is enough.

Not immediately but it does open the door to that route.
