Thought I would share this bit of good news.

YEAH! GO MISSOURI! ONE OF OUR SENATORS IS AGAINST IT!

Sorry about that, my caps lock went on a rampage.

PIPA and SOPA are almost the same thing. PIPA is the Senate version, SOPA the House version. In order for it to become law both chambers need to pass the same law and the President needs to sign it. All three are looking unlikely at the moment, though don't take anything for granted.

Whereas OPEN is basically the Google alternative.

Something about Google sponsoring legislature just seems disgusting to me.

Be like Facebook advocating anti-privacy laws.

To say it's the Google Alternative is silly. They are just one of MANY companies supporting it. It was proposed by Darrell Issa (California) and Ron Wyden (Oregon)

Companies to support OPEN: AOL, eBay, Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, The Mozilla Foundation (Firefox), Twitter, Vimeo, Yahoo, and Zygnia

I don't mind Google wanting to be able to block sites with illegal content from their roster (or maybe I misunderestimated what Open is)

........................... all they really want to do is shelve the bill until the new president and hope he has the technological literacy of a burrito.
I think you'll find that ALL presidents have the technological literacy of a burrito... in fact just leave out the technological part.
-----------------
But it's coming - remember everything belongs to somebody else and the law is going to enforce that sooner or later because:

Bigbiz wants the bucks...
and the govs want the taxes from it...
and the lawyers want the fees involved..
And those are the three forces that control us....
and any other concept is communism and against Capitalism (the only TRUE god).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I thought of copyrighting my house and suing Google Street View for showing it.

It's a step in the right direction but it's still not enough.

I like how Bungie and Mojang are against it, despite being a big company that supposedly benefits from SOPA and PIPA.

Interesting. Lamar Smith is a mess. But unless you understood the dynamics of the relationship of Hollywood, and the representatives from that area, you have no idea what a mess this is. Being the result: people having to agree with leaders they otherwise can't stand....must feel weird for many to have to agree with Rep. Issa, for instance. (who opposes SOPA) and disagree with their other 'heroes' who are co-sponsors.

I found it quite unusual that they added language to the bills that states "If any part of this bill is deemed unconstitutional, the remaining parts will stand"... It's almost like they know it is going to be challenged and that it will be declared unconstitutional.
