Got my first LCD monitor a monitor called "AOC 2436" and I've had it for less than a week yet I already have one dead pixel, a red one that greatly annoys me.

Is it normal for there to be a dead pixel soon and just how easily can they form ? And do you recommend using programs such as UDPixel to try and fix the problem or may I just make it worse ? And while I am running UDPixel does it matter what kind of a background I have (may sound silly since it is a dead pixel after all but I tend to see the program flashing more easily on certain backgrounds, is that just a trick my eye is playing on my mind or does the program not function as well with certain colored backgrounds ?

What would you do to a monitor with a single dead pixel after less than a week ?

Edit:
After looking it up I'll probably just get a 1333 type listed on the motherboard's confirmed support list.

I'm probably getting a Phenom IIx4 965 and this motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128521

Looking it up it seems without forcing it with overclocking that processor only supports up to DDR3 1333.

My question is this:
If I get DDR3 1600 from the motherboard's supported list (I understand it's risky to buy if it's not on the list?) will that RAM work at 1333 with that CPU without any messing around with RAM settings of which I know nothing about?

The price is almost identical, so if 1600 will just plug in and work at 1333, so it's there if I upgrade the CPU some time in the future to one that supports 1600, I'd do that.

If it's messy I'd just get supported 1333.

I plan to get 8GBx2 for about $40, of which there are many options.

It should run at 1333 Mhz I believe. The worst you will have to do is change the setting to that in the BIOS. One thing to point out is your next processor will most likely not be on a DDR3 board so I wouldn't think about that as a reason to for for one speed or the other.

Having some problems with my computer.

1) Two problems actually and I'm not quite sure if they are the same or not. About 4 - 6 months ago I had a crash dump (blue screen of death), and didnt think too much of it, even though it was my first one on this computer. In the last month or two they are becoming a bit more common. I can go for a few days without one and then get hit with 3 or 4 in a very long day of computer gaming.

2) Soon after (about 2 - 3 months), I've started getting what some people call the brown screen of death. This one makes the computer screen turn light brown with vertical lines on it. The brown screen can hit more frequently, and sometimes while I'm running no programs, the computer is just on. Also sometimes there is sound, the game I'm playing seems to get stuck in a continous sound loop. This one completly locks he computer up as well.

Around the time of the blue screen I had just installed a Radeon 5770, so I had assumed I needed updated driver for it and that was the cause. I've recently installed the newest driver and both problems are still there. I've heard some people say the brown screen could be caused by not having a large enough power supply for the video card. I also installed a 650 power supply at that time and the Radeon only needs a 450.

Some more searching and I've read that an old BIOS could cause this. Turns out mine was 3 1/2 years old, so I just installed the newest one, wich is still 2 1/2 years old (my computer hasn't sold in 3 - 4 years). Not sure if this could have been the problem or even fixed it, so this post may actually be unnecessary. Nevermind on the Bios, just got the brown screen again a few minutnes ago :brokencomputer:

I've heard bad ram can do this too. I ran chkdsk and it hangs up at 13% on one of the steps for over an hour, so no results from that one. The other checks I've run on the memory show it is ok, execpt for one of them. I believe it may have been the Memory Diagnostics Tool which said there was a hardware problem and thet there was corrupt (or damaged) memory. Sorry I dont have an exact quote, the program said it would give me a message about the resualts and I expected a text file somewhere ... was just a pop-up.

In case it matters:

It should run at 1333 Mhz I believe. The worst you will have to do is change the setting to that in the BIOS. One thing to point out is your next processor will most likely not be on a DDR3 board so I wouldn't think about that as a reason to for for one speed or the other.

I already ordered the 1333 DDR3.

Either way, I intend this computer to last me awhile. The last time I upgraded was seven years ago. It may not be that extreme this time, but I fully anticipate switching to an AM3+ CPU in the future if I need to, in 2-4 years or so. As far as I know, AMD changes socket types FAR less than Intel, which is one of the reasons (other than price) I went AMD.

Thanks though! I just imagined the computer not booting and then having to fiddle around for hours trying to figure out what I needed to do to get it to accept the RAM. It really doesn't matter then, if the RAM is on the motherboard maker's confirmed compatible list?

Are your speakers using HDMI audio though? If they're plugged into the PC and not the monitor, then the HDMI audio device isn't being used.

HDMI audio drivers are included in your graphics card's driver package, so reinstall those if you're using that device. If not, then find out what audio chipset is on your motherboard and find the drivers for that.

Nvm.

Could you give us more information? Maybe, a dxdiag report of the location of your Steam install (hopefully not in the Program Files directory).

slightly less important, yet anoying problem:

I decided to install A.I. Suite onto my computer. The first day, It ran fine. The next day, the cpu fan was running 10 percent faster, and kept rising with each boot. I am now running at 100% fan, and am no longer able to sleep with my computer on anymore. what could be the issue here? it occurs whenever the Motherboard goes into POST.

EDIT: Please Disregard this. Somehow, My ASUS Q-Fan function was turned off, causing the cpu fan to run at dangerously high speeds. I went into my BIOS and reactivated ths feature, and now all is well. I can hear myself think now.

You were right, I just installed the hdmi audio drivers that I had before I screwed everything up. Thanks.

(this isn't sarcasm btw)

Hello all,

I've done some googling about the best way to actually utilise an SSD once installed.

I was thinking about moving the default location of my Users Folder (Seems there's a method using an .xml during W7 installation) to keep it all off my SSD. Has anyone had any experiencing doing anything like this?

I know alot of people on these boards have SSD's, how do you guys use yours? Has anyone bothered moving default install locations, folders etc...?

So, any thoughts on this before I just buy a new graphics card?
The more I've read about the problems the more I'm convinced it's probably the card. Still another opinion would be nice :D
Oh yeah, and the blue screen hasnt hit again since I updated the drivers, so hopefully that part is fixed.

So I'm trying to build a desktop that will be able to play Skyrim on High (or Ultra) settings within a budget of around $1000. This is what I have so far:

Motherboard:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131706 - $132.99 (Free Shipping)
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072 - $214.99 (Free Shipping)
GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125385 - $249.99 (Free Shipping)
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231428 - $44.99 (Free Shipping)
HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148697 - $149.99 (Free Shipping)
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182132 - $79.99 (Free Shipping)
Optical Drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827135204 - $17.99 (Freeish Shipping)
Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119196 - $69.99 (Free Shipping)
OS: http://e5.onthehub.com/WebStore/OfferingDetails.aspx?ws=0784610b-cd9b-e011-969d-0030487d8897&vsro=8&o=94d86669-ccc4-df11-859b-0030487d8897 - Free (Student Deal)
TOTAL: $960.92 (+ Tax)

Now I have a few questions:
1. Figuring out the compatibility of the motherboard is confusing, do you think the motherboard I have will work well with all the other parts I'm getting?
2. I can never figure out the Wattage for the PSU. I'm planning on the 650W one, but out of pure guessing. Is there a way to easily figure out what PSU to get?
3. My total cost is under $1000 right now, but I still have to buy various periphrials after this (monitor, mouse, keyboard, speakers, etc.) so is there anything I can do where I can get cheaper parts but still be able to run Skyrim on High (hopefully Ultra) settings?
4. Do you see anything glaringly wrong in this setup? I'm new to building computers so please tell me if I'm doing it wrong!

Any help would be greatly appretiated, thanks.

1. For as long as that mobo supports the Sandy Bridge CPUs I can't see the reason why there would be any compatibility problems with the other parts.
2. Provided you are not interested in using more than one video card a quality 650W PSU like the one you chose is more than enough.
3. Sure you can get cheaper parts that would still be able to run Skyrim well enough but why build a new PC just for one game?
4. I can't see anything wrong. This is a solid rig that can last you for quite a while and serve many purposes.

Does anyone have any idea why when I open applications from a cold boot they all choose to not be full screen? Notably is Firefox and Comodo Dragon (Chrome based browser) on my Windows 7 Pro machine and at work Mozilla Thunderbird does the same but that PC is Windows XP. I have noticed this with some other applications too and it is quite annoying since I always have them fullscreen as it is.

Hey everyone. Need some input on something.

I got a $100 Newegg gift card for my birthday and I'm not sure what I wanna use it on. Here's a list of everything I can think of that's related to my computer:

Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-M57SLI-S4 AM2 NVIDIA http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128014

Monitor: Asus VH236H 23" http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236059
Headset: Logitech USB H530 http://www.logitech.com/en-us/webcam-communications/internet-headsets-phones/devices/7115
Speakers: Logitech 2.1 (Don't really matter. Rarely use them. Some movies or music when cleaning up.)

I have no issues putting more money towards what I'm going to get, but probably wouldn't go more than around another $100 in. I was thinking about adding another video card for SLI but my video is discontinued and I'm not sure how SLIing two different cards will work. Thanks for any input!

5GB of RAM? How do you have your RAM sticks setup? If you have a 2x2GB kit, then use just that....get rid of the outlier DIMM. Some boards can be picky about mixing and matching RAM and your brown screen may be the effect of one of your DIMMs being unstable with the kit.

Answered your question in this thread:
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1254956-unofficial-will-my-pc-run-skyrim-thread-53-w-hardware-guide/page__view__findpost__p__19200221

But I'll just repost it...try not to crosspost mkay?

1. Motherboard you chose is compatible...just not very good for OCing if there's intentions to do so.

2. Power Supply is a good choice and is actually overkill for the system. THe 550W of the same model would do fine. Rosewill has a bad history of junk PSUs, but seems to be getting their quality up with their recent Green Series and now their HIVE releases...these units are well built and best of all inexpensive. A really simple, but accurate PSU caclulator can be gotten here from Phaedrus over at OCN (even makes PSU suggestions too):
http://www.overclock.net/t/1140534/psu-calc-final-release

3.
- Consider lowering the video card to a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102948 instead. Will still pull Ultra with that.
- Consider this cheaper but better OCing motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157230

4. For the most part decent choices. However:

- If you plan to overclock the CPU though, that board isn't the greatest with VRM power phases. Should get the Asus P8P67 (non-LE) at least if you plan to overclock and wish to have an Asus board. I have that board and the 12 VRM Phase design allows some high OCing stability. Here is a CPU+MOBO combo with said board:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.763312

However since you are going cheap, the Asrock Pro3 mentioned above is still a good choice and OCs very well.

- Get the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152185&Tpk=samsung%20f3%201tb hard drive over that Seagate. Seagate hasn't been the greatest over the years with quality since the acquisition of Maxtor.

I have no issues putting more money towards what I'm going to get, but probably wouldn't go more than around another $100 in. I was thinking about adding another video card for SLI but my video is discontinued and I'm not sure how SLIing two different cards will work. Thanks for any input!

For SLI, cannot use different cards. Must be another GTX 470...doesn't have to be same brand, but does have to be a GTX 470. Not a fan of SLI to begin with since it adds heat to the system, can be flaky with drivers, and not all games scale SLI well. For those that do scale SLI...can vary from 10 - 90% performance increase. Why pay the full amount for a second card when you may not reap all of its benefits?

Is selling the GTX 470 an option for the time being to get more funds on top of the $100 extra you'd put in? Then you can get something more respectable like the GTX 570 although that Phenom chip will hold that card back a bit.

The other option is getting an SSD...something like the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148441 or the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220602

So you're thinking that if I upgrade any one piece, I'll have to upgrade multiple?

I was thinking about an SSD as a definite possibility. Thanks for the suggestions.

I bought mine for $25 from a druggie at my old job, I thought that was a very fair and reasonable price. :P

Eh not really. The bottleneck wouldn't be drastic with a more powerful video card...probably be tolerable. Can always look into OCing that CPU too...it's still a decent chip.

Does anyone know where to connect an antistatic wrist strap to a case that's been painted inside and out (Cooler Master HAF 912+)? Since the only places I can find that have bare metal surfaces are standoff screws (the tips) which are already in the case. However, I believe the holes they're in may have already been painted thus isn't fully connected to the case. Or will any bare metal surface do as long as they're in the case?

You can ground yourself to any metallic surface. It does not need to be inside or connected to your computer chassis. The point is to remove any static buildup on your person, it doesn't matter where its discharged to, as long as its NOT discharging through sensitive electronic components.

Another thing you can do is plug your PSU up, with the power switch off, and touch it often to ground yourself (like say, before you pick up any component?).
