The hotkey system for the PC version is atrocious, good lord

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 8:21 am

At least I'll be playing Skyrim, so I'm sure I'll get over it quickly.

My only gripe that I've heard is fighting Dragons, you can accidentally hit people fighting the Dragon, then they turn on you mid combat. That's the only thing that makes me sad thus far
I'd rather have friendly fire than no friendly fire.
In Oblivion you could apologize for this and they would stop attacking you if you did so.

Buy a Naga mouse and/or Anansi keyboard both by Razer and you will never ever have to worry about game key binding ever again.

I was really hoping that after all this time... BGS would understand the importance of having a PROPER PC INTERFACE.

Bethesda, what are you guys thinking? We primarily use a keyboard + mouse for gaming, but you package a UI made specifically for a controller with the PC version and limit us to 8 (EIGHT) hotkeys that don't even assign L and R hand equips properly? Are you serious?

This was my one and only real fear - that the PC users would get a clumsy, garbage version of the console interface. Honestly, you've had three years to build this game and not once did it cross your mind that your PC fan base (the user base with you FROM THE BEGINNING when PC was the ONLY option) get a keyboard+mouse friendly UI?

I will still be picking up my preorder tonight but this has left a really sour taste in my mouth... three+ years in development and we can't even get an intuitive UI for PC at launch... that is sad :(

You know what, I'm not surprised at all about this. Us PC users always get FU???? in the a$$ when it comes this sort of thing cuz of consoles!!! :flame:

I don't even use hotkeys. Why not just go into the menu if it's that annoying?

Part of me is in denial and hoping the information is coming from a source who hasn't figured out out to get controls setup properly, but probably not.

It annoys me because it makes me not wanna play my dual-wielding + casting orc shaman as my first character until mods have introduced a better system.

Same here I was planning on a battlemage but it seems the UI will make it a pain in the ass.

That may be true, but not when the game only gives you eight hotkey slots. You'd be wasting a big chunk of change.

I could have sworn I read that you can use all ten hotkeys... Must have been wrong.

As a console gamer (Though very familiar with PC gaming) I can say that it's bull. UI is the most important differentiating aspect of the platforms, and to not nail PC UI is a kick in the balls.

I never thought I'd say it, but Mods'll fix it.

Ugh... that's even more cackhanded than just letting us assign pairs of items/spells to each hot key

I blame all the great modders.

This time B just sat down and said "Hey lets just make a great game for the consoles. The modders can do the rest for us. FOR FREE!!!"

Not really catching on to what you guys are talking about. Say I have fire on hotkey 1 and ice on hotkey 2 and sword on 3. To switch from sword main and ice offhand to sword/fire I couldn't just press hotkey 1 (fire)? Also pressing 2 (ice) wouldn't switch me back to sword/ice?

Maybe it's Bethesda telling their PC users, "Your not needed anymore so DIAF".

Don't count on it being any time soon.

Functionality for additional hotkeys wasn't added to Oblivion for best part of a year, it's not a part of the core Oblivion game engine it had to be added using OBSE.

If you're a PC player I wouldn't sweat anything. In 6 months or so there will be a mod for just about everything, and who knows this may be one of the first mods... either that or a boobie mod :P
Oh come on now, you know making their game look like hentai is first on the list for 85.7% of the modding community.....*slowly turns to*

I think an excellent fix would be to have the right part of the inventory/magic screen taken up by a hotbar with numbers 0-9, and you drag and drop weapons, shields, spells and so on into a number's box. Everything in the box gets equipped at the same time, first object in M1, second in M2.

Wow, so I can only bind 1-8

Is there any way to tweak the ini so I can bind any key to favorites?

This is really discouraging to hear. I was wondering how they were going to do it, but I never in my life would have even come up with the possibility of them doing it the way they have, would never have crossed my mind as an option to do it this way at all.

Bethesda, seriously now, if you are going to charge us for a AAAA (not just an AAA) title, then please take the same care for our PC controls as you are for the console controls. I'm really feeling like we're getting the short end of the stick right now.

Thanks
